As a child this is how we almost always had tuna, just mixed with lots of malt vinegar and then in a sandwich with cucumber. It was my absolute favourite
I've never heard of anyone else having this it seems for be tuna and Mayo/salad cream that are the norm!
just out of interest did anyone else ever have this? Or are my parents strange!

Dunno but dh has tuna sandwiches with salt and vinegar crisps

ChessieFL · 29/07/2022 15:39

We used to have tinned salmon mixed with vinegar and then put with cucumber in the sandwich. Tuna was always either just plain or with mayonnaise (and then cucumber).

Bippertyboo2 · 29/07/2022 15:40

When I was a child that's how we had them too, maybe mayo wasn't a thing back then?

I had those as a child they were delicious. I don't really have tuna sandwiches anymore. I do have tuna mayo and sweetcorn jacket potatoes a lot though.

RoseDog · 29/07/2022 15:40

My grandparents used to make this for us when we were younger but it was tinned salmon not tuna.

I've tried to recreate it but it's just not the same.

Plumbear2 · 29/07/2022 15:40

This is exactly how I ate it in the 80s. My kids prefer mayo but I still have it this way.

MaryJoLisa · 29/07/2022 15:41

Me too. Vinegar, salt and pepper, always with cucumber. Enough vinegar that the bread went soggy was my preference.

BareBelliedSneetch · 29/07/2022 15:41

We used white wine vinegar, not malt, but otherwise that’s still how I do tuna sandwiches now.

Georgeskitchen · 29/07/2022 15:42

Yes always had it mixed with vinegar in younger days.
Also when calorie counting mix with vinegar instead of mayo/salad cream

MouseShoes · 29/07/2022 15:42

We always have tuna with mayo. I’m interested to try it with vinegar now. Is it better with tuna in oil or spring water/brine?

Babiesarenotrobots · 29/07/2022 15:42

My partner's tuna sandwiches always taste way better than mine and I only recently found out it's because he's shining vinegar to it - and mayo. It makes it runnier, more like in sandwich shops so I'm assuming they do it too to make the filling go further?

Figgygal · 29/07/2022 15:42

I still have that
Tuna, vinegar and salad cream
Sometimes sweetcorn and spring onions too
The best!!

teenagetantrums · 29/07/2022 15:43

Yes it's a thing. I love tuna on toast with viniger.

hedgehoglurker · 29/07/2022 15:44

Yes, with vinegar, black pepper and cucumber.

ThreeRingCircus · 29/07/2022 15:44

My aunt used to love tuna with vinegar, she's the only other person I'd ever heard of mixing the two (until today) so thank you for the walk down memory lane, OP!

Baaaaaa · 29/07/2022 15:45

Definately a thing. I don't like tuna without vinegar.

totallybonafido · 29/07/2022 15:46

Yes! I love it

bigTillyMint · 29/07/2022 15:46

We had tinned salmon and vinegar. Tuna is with mayo! 🤷🏼‍♀️

SunnyKlara · 29/07/2022 15:47

Always have my tuna sandwich like this, but it's just tuna. If it's tuna mayo, I add tuna, vinegar and mayo. I assumed everyone did!

ticktickticktickBOOM · 29/07/2022 15:48

Yes I mix tuna with vinegar and also mayo, salt and black pepper. This thread is making my mouth water!!!

ExPatHereForAChat · 29/07/2022 15:49

Omg, I think I'd like this! I'm going to try it next time I'm having tuna :D

AtleastitsnotMonday · 29/07/2022 15:49

Absolutely, I still make it like this today. Tuna, vinegar, pepper and cucumber. Loads better than tuna mayo. Is tuna mayo a particularly British thing? I've just returned from a holiday in the med and despite tuna being served a lot out there (sandwiches and salads) it was never served with mayo.

FreezyFreezy · 29/07/2022 15:50

We make tuna mayo with black pepper and lemon juice. Something to do with the acidity. Never tried it with vinegar.

Imissprosecco · 29/07/2022 15:51

That's how I have them too. The stronger the better!

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 29/07/2022 15:51

This is always how I have it!

Loads of vinegar. I don't like mayo or floppy fillings. With sliced cucumber and buttered bread, love this sandwich!
