What do you buy too much of?

Just lighthearted as I can't sleep

I'll start - I buy way too many books.
I love to read but on my last count I have 518 on my bookshelf. I've cut back on spending now and am getting them from bookswaps instead

So what's your thing?

Food here too. I have an irrational need for the cupboards to be full to bursting at all times. I do a 'big shop' even when we could comfortably manage for over a week with whats in the cupboards and freezer.

Also, cookbooks (which I don't have time to use!) There's a them here isn't there?

Any day now I’ll have the time and inclination to make Kim Joys elaborate cake jelly aquarium creation, I’m sure of it.

saturdaysgoodwithme · 29/07/2022 10:43

@Rassy - me too!

Well haven't done it for years but when I was younger I had stretch jeans in most of the colours. I found a lovely basic vest from H&M years ago and I bought 2 of each in all the colours (this is when I had no dependants of course hahah)

I used to be shocking for books and I gave lots away and now only buy one, take one to the charity shop. I hoarded lipsticks/lipglosses/lip balms until the pandemic and I am still in the process of using them up.

I still have/buy too many clothes and I've always bought one specific brand of skincare.

I am really trying to cut back though. The amount of stuff we have had made me queasy and I feel anxious if there is too much stuff.

I've always got loads of laundry detergent and loo rolls. I always have something in the pantry that I can make for dinner (if it's just me and I'll eat most things except most meat).

pinkyredrose · 29/07/2022 10:49

Loo roll. Ran out in lockdown, no way am i going through that again.

ChrissyShenkle · 29/07/2022 10:51

Makeup and hair products, I'm an absolute sucker

TenoringBehind · 29/07/2022 10:51

Books, although I would argue that you can’t have too many books.

plants, seeds

Workyticket · 29/07/2022 10:51

Yarn - I crochet and have a circular knitting machine

Audio books

Gin!

CormoranStrike · 29/07/2022 10:53

Horrible sugar free Heinz Tomato Soup! I bought a four pack yesterday thinking it was ordinary Heinz and the texture and taste are so different.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 29/07/2022 10:56

Guitars! We have no room left and yet I keep going.......

LadyLothbrook · 29/07/2022 10:56

Food. Much of it gets wasted or stays unused. We are not big eaters so I don't know why I do it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 29/07/2022 11:04

This is a very, very bad thread for me... Shock

Body creams, so many of them
Clothes
Shoes - and not always in my size 'but near enough'
Perfumes

Oggyoi · 29/07/2022 11:05

plants. compost. seeds, seed trays, pots. Though to be fair I bulk buy when it's on offer so save £££ !

BelfastSmile · 29/07/2022 11:06

Toothbrushes. I've cut down a bit now, but I think it's a throwback to being a teenager and somehow getting the impression that toothbrushes were really expensive (I guess my mum always bought them for me, so I never really knew the price, just had this impression that they cost a lot).

Once I was buying them for myself I'd go into a chemist and see toothbrushes for 70p or something and think that was a really good deal, so I'd buy 5 or something. But then I'd be out again and see more, and buy those. I had a stockpile of about 20 at one point, when I finally realised that that was just the standard price (back then), so I stopped buying them for a while, but I still get sucked in every so often and buy more.

I've started using bamboo ones recently, though, which I buy online in bulk, so that has made it easier to stop and think before I lift another handful!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 29/07/2022 11:08

@ReeseWitherfork I keep looking at Nigellas Lasagne of Love but can't commit that much time! I recently bought the Santosh Shah book and the food looks amazing but even getting the Nepalese ingredients is time conscious so who knows if I'll ever make anything 🤷‍♀️

MummyInTheNecropolis · 29/07/2022 11:10

Nothing, I’m too poor. But if I had money to spare, it would probably be books and nice toiletries - I do lust after fancy shower gels and bubble baths!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/07/2022 11:10

Food books, I have hundreds of them

Maggiesgirl · 29/07/2022 11:13

Roses. My garden is full of them and then I go to the garden centre snd come home with another.

SingingSands · 29/07/2022 11:20

Nice soaps. You know the ones from TK Maxx that come in a lovely box or paper wrapping? I stash them in clothes drawers to store them so they scent the drawer but don't really seem to get around to actually using them, because they're too nice...

Clothes for the DC’s. It’s actually shameful.

When packing for our summer holiday we discovered that DD10 has 34 complete summer outfits before we even start to mix and match things 😳.

I'm the same
Kids clothes

I go to all the next sales and buy stuff all the time for them they have tonnes

Currently trying to eBay all the excess 😂

HorseInTheHouse · 29/07/2022 11:26

I have to hold myself back from children's clothes. I love getting them new clothes. I think I do quite well on reigning it in, though. They probably have slightly more than necessary with frequent washing but it's not silly.

A part of me feels secretly pleased when they grow out of stuff or put massive holes in the knees, though, which I am well aware is ridiculous and am quite ashamed of.

OldWivesTale · 29/07/2022 11:32

Mugs
Bedding
Books
Coats

rightonthyme · 29/07/2022 11:47

Got any boys 3-4y or baby girls stuff going? 😅

Loungewear/nightwear usually in the sales. Lots of different looks for spring/summer but it's autumn/winter styles that are my weakness. From luxury suede slipper boots, to cashmere Loungewear sets and zip up fleece sweatshirts, lounge dresses, shackets in beiges/neutrals to greys and black and whites I've got many looks covered. Loads with tags on not even worn yet ready for the new season. Im definitely not buying any this autumn winter! Well maybe just a plain oodie ( I don't have one, and with the cost of fuel etc
), and some nice luxury soft lounge leggings........
