I need the power of MN (to prove that I'm right...). If someone says they are "making a roast on Sunday" what meat(s) could possibly be being served?

Hiphopopotamus · 24/07/2022 20:20

So wait OP - would you not have said that Christmas dinner with turkey and trimming was a roast dinner?

RockinHorseShit · 24/07/2022 20:24

Any joint of meat, nut roast or veggie Wellington

Summerfun54321 · 24/07/2022 20:25

No OP has ever been this wrong in the history of MN!

Heresince2006 · 24/07/2022 20:28

OP, you have made me laugh by your complete wrongness, and your willingness to be proven completely wrong. Never mind roasts - you are a star.

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 24/07/2022 20:29

Andylion · 24/07/2022 19:57

See, there you go. Canadians agree with you. OP.

@Andylion & @UpToMyElbowsInDiapers I'm willing to move to Canada to be less wrong about this! 😁

I agree with you OP.
If I was offered 'a roast' I definitely wouldn't expect chicken!
That's specifically called 'roast chicken'.
A roast = beef or maybe lamb.
That's what would be expected where I'm from in Ireland.

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/07/2022 20:30

I would find chicken an odd Sunday roast. Roast chicken is just roast chicken.

TheodoreMortlock · 24/07/2022 20:35

Ha. A roast in our house is just the veggies, so if it's any comfort OP our idea of "a roast" disappoints more than chicken would!

WillMcAvoy · 24/07/2022 20:39

EspeciallyDeIighted · 24/07/2022 18:55

Any joint of meat, it just needs to be in one piece.

Doesn't need to be meat at all

mrskatebob · 24/07/2022 20:45

I'm confused.

Did you think in order for a meal to be a Sunday roast the meat had to be beef?

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 24/07/2022 20:46

ChristinaXYZ · 24/07/2022 19:47

I'd say roast beef is the classic OP console yourself with that! Hence the French calling us 'les rosbifs' (interesting on the history of that news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2913151.stm )

But I agree it is a roast whole bird or significant joint (ie not processed) of meat.

Thanks, @ChristinaXYZ! Interesting article, and now I can add 'gastro-nationalism' to my vocabulary (along with an updated definition of 'a roast'...).

If offered 'a roast' I would expect oven roasted meat or fish that is cooked as a whole and portioned out after cooking. There is always a sauce to add at the table (gravy/parsley sauce etc depending on the protein), roast potatoes, and a selection of other traditional 'roast dinner' sides. Which sides would vary depending on the meat/fish served, season and occasion.

A roast is definitely not just beef!

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/07/2022 20:30

Where is the logic that roast chicken, served on a Sunday, is not a Sunday roast? Can you only have roast chicken on a different day?

OP, have you never been to a pub for a Sunday roast , and got to choose from lamb, pork, beef or chicken?

I’m so boggled by this thread!

steff13 · 24/07/2022 20:50

I would argue that the cooking method makes it a roast, rather that what type of meat/vegetarian alternative it was.

Lochjeda · 24/07/2022 20:51

Roast Chicken/Turkey, Pork, Ham, Lamb or Beef?

autienotnaughty · 24/07/2022 20:52

A roast is beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, pork or gammon. If dh said I'm doing a roast I would usually assume beef or chicken.

Hm2020 · 24/07/2022 20:56

Now I want a roast.😥
turkey, beef, lamb, chicken, gammon and any other joint of meat or whole bird must at the very least have a veg and potato’s as sides with gravey and in our house Yorkshire pudding.

Chouetted · 24/07/2022 20:56

Roast chicken is the best kind of roast, it's like Christmas Dinner without it having to be Christmas!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 24/07/2022 20:57

Chicken, beef, ham

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 24/07/2022 20:58

Beef, Lamb, Pork/Gammon, Chicken, Turkey.

AegonT · 24/07/2022 20:58

Whole chicken, duck, goose, whole or crown of Turkey. Beef, lamb, pork, ham. Any roasted meat really if it isn't processed (not sausages, burgers, meatballs, nuggets). Nutroast. If served with roast vegetables then the meat could be slow cooked instead for example but the meal could still be called a roast.

MatildaJayne · 24/07/2022 20:58

Same as the majority above. Except my exMIL used to do roast gammon and no gravy with boiled new potatoes for Sunday dinner occasionally. She was a marvellous cook, her food was always delicious, but I was so disappointed when we went around for Sunday dinner and it was gammon. Sad (Kept it to myself, obviously)

That's acceptable, but it needs pineapple with it.

That is indeed very disappointing... Gravy is like at least half the point of a roast dinner!

WhimsicalGubbins · 24/07/2022 21:02

I think it’s different for everyone. In our house it usually means chicken, but sometime also beef or pork. They’re the 3 most common-but as long as it’s been roasted in the oven and has all the trimmings, then it can be any meat (or veggie option) that you choose
