I need the power of MN (to prove that I'm right...). If someone says they are "making a roast on Sunday" what meat(s) could possibly be being served?

A "roast" in this house is a chicken, it's what we have 99% of the time. Any other roast meat is referred to by its name, as in, "shall we have beef this Sunday instead of the usual roast?"

whiteroseredrose · 24/07/2022 19:01

Here a roast is beef usually, occasionally lamb.

LadyHelenaJustina · 24/07/2022 19:02

Sometimes I do a sausage roast or a nut roast, but it is always described like that to differentiate it from a proper roast (with a joint of meat or a whole bird)

Coffeaddict · 24/07/2022 19:03

Any joint you fancy. I'm not veggie but quite partial to a nut roast myself

constantavoider · 24/07/2022 19:03

My roast is everything except the meat 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shakeitshakeitbaby · 24/07/2022 19:03

Chicken or beef, maybe a gammon at a push.

IncompleteSenten · 24/07/2022 19:04

I suppose it could be argued that anything cooked in the oven is roasted.

But really, to me it's meat excluding fish. Not processed stuff like sausages or burgers though.

If you do roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings you could get away with calling many things a roast dinner 😁

Gentleness · 24/07/2022 19:04

Something that needs to be carved.

I'd assume meat at first, but on second thoughts, it could be a nut roast, a spiced cauliflower or stuffed squash or similar.

Soubriquet · 24/07/2022 19:04

Beef, chicken, sausages. Basically any meat or vegan options.

Hunderland · 24/07/2022 19:05

Any meat mentioned so far except sausages - but I have to say, I would be very sad if it was a nut roast...

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 24/07/2022 19:05

Well, I was even more wrong than any of you guessed... 😳

I was teasing DH (who cooked tonight) that he should have made me a roast because it's Sunday. He said that he had offered (offered to get a whole chicken for tonight while we were shopping earlier but I wasn't inthemood for that). I said that "a roast" ONLY meant beef.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 24/07/2022 19:05

I'm going to guess that what was served was chicken and mushroom pie Smile

NoSquirrels · 24/07/2022 19:06

A joint of meat i.e. a whole chunk, if it’s for meat eaters. That can be ‘roasted’ in different ways - slow-cooked lamb, for instance, I’d say was ‘a roast’ if it was served with roast veg and not e.g. cous cous or whatever.

Soubriquet · 24/07/2022 19:06

No! Roast chicken. It’s in the name OP!

burnoutbabe · 24/07/2022 19:06

My roast is

Roasted veg (pre roasted -aunt Bessie types)
Peas
Breaded chicken or a veggie pastry thing
Gravy and Yorkshire's

All put on oven /to steam at sane time. (Bar yorkshires and gravy's)

SleepingAgent · 24/07/2022 19:07

Any meat that requires using proper carving tools. And a bazillion roast tatties of course.

Most often in our house is chicken but any solid lump of meat including game could be a "roast".

Sharrowgirl · 24/07/2022 19:09

Yeah, you’re wrong sorry. A whole
chicken would qualify as a roast.

Is that "my roast" in the same vein as "my truth"?

HannahSternDefoe · 24/07/2022 19:10

NOT a Roast included Bernard Mathews Turkey Escalopes, Birds Eye Chicken Dippers, Any Brand Sausages, Aunt Bessie Toad in the Hole, Brains Faggots.
Also NOT unless by prior agreement/unless you're a veggie household any form of "pretend" or "plant-based" meat or a nut roast.

Chicken is.

TeapotTitties · 24/07/2022 19:11

I said that "a roast" ONLY meant beef.

But why did you say that?

Surely as an adult you know other joints of meat for roasting exist?

TeenDivided · 24/07/2022 19:13

Oh OP. You were so wrong Grin

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 24/07/2022 19:15

Why wouldn't a roast chicken count as a roast?!

Soubriquet · 24/07/2022 19:16

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 24/07/2022 19:15

Why wouldn't a roast chicken count as a roast?!

Nope!

Has to have roast potatoes, veg, yorkie pups and gravy to count as a roast too

Skinterior · 24/07/2022 19:16

Joint, or bird of some type.

TheTeenageYears · 24/07/2022 19:18

Have you never been to a pub that serves roasts on a Sunday and therefore thought it weird they did anything other than beef?
