Any values the Tory Party may ever have held went out of the window with that video.

The sooner they are gone the better. I was going to say before they ruined this country but they've already done that. How much more is left for them to strip from it?

GreenLunchBox · 06/08/2022 00:29

They've destroyed our democracy.

It's so easy for her to sound off to her supporters. The 0.02% of people who are going to choose between her and Sunak. She calls those disrupting 'infiltrators'. Yes, they don't vote Tory!
She does like to demonise anyone who isn't a conservative voter.
She's in for a rough ride if she thinks she will always be preaching to the converted.

@Quia Mr Johnson wouldn't do a phone in because of some questions he could be asked that are fairly simple to most people. Such as 'when did you last change a nappy'.

I am worried that she is gong to be shredded so much each week at PMQs that I will feel sorry for her.

Starmer and Drakeford must be delighted.

Cornettoninja · 06/08/2022 08:41

After her speech is interrupted by protestors, Liz Truss tells the audience she will bring in new legislation to stop "our democracy being disrupted by unfair protests”

Whose democracy though? Seems to me (and many, many others) silencing protest and opposition voices isn’t actually democratic at all. In a proper democracy we can name fascism when we see it and the accused is strong enough to take it.

nah, she’s made a series of purposeful choices to manoeuvre herself into the position she has. Any consequence truely belongs to her. Same goes for Rishi.

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/08/2022 08:46

I've run out of disbelief in the Conservative party. Just when you think they can't possibly get any lower- lying to the Queen, breaking the law (proroguing parliament), Cummings, partygate, lying some more, starving the people and forcing them to live on the charity of others(foodbanks), Rwanda, banning protests, anti-democratic- they manage it. And they get lower by the day.

I don't understand how they are capable of it, what the fuck are they doing?

the80sweregreat · 06/08/2022 09:21

She wants to silence people who are concerned about climate change. Couldn't make it up really.

Roussette · 06/08/2022 09:21

Nah, I won't be feeling sorry for her because she has taken to waving her hands around like trump used to do and it irritates the hell put of me 😂

I already can't bear her and she hasn't won it yet. I feel this battle for the top job has been on for years rather than a few weeks.

KatharineofAragon · 06/08/2022 09:28

The two of them are absolutely guaranteeing a Labour victory at the next election.

You’d hope so but if I’ve learnt anything over the last twelve years it’s the publics attention span is short and fickle. Unless there’s a massive cultural shift to people being able to accept that they’ve backed the wrong horse I’m genuinely afraid we've a lot more to come.

I so agree. I honestly have had enough of her. I am trying to imagine her at the despatch box after an Ian Blackford mauling. And I can't.

The tories are a living embodiment of this meme. Which is a shame because it was funny before it got real.

I wonder how many 'decent' Conservatives - those who are appalled by the swing to the right of Conservatism - how many just won't turn up to vote.

Not necessarily vote for Labour, but just not vote at all.

Cornettoninja · 06/08/2022 10:06

@cakeorwine i suspect it will be a small but significant number, which would be valuable if they did give their vote to another party but make very little difference to the overall result by just abstaining.

I recognise that the next GE is a significant point though, this current crop of tories really need knocking of their perches. Best case scenario is that they’ve really worn out any remaining goodwill and the current cost of living will finish them off. You’d think it was inevitable looking at everything right now but the loyalty runs deep in peoples psyche even when they’re the ones taking a pummelling.

I don't know - there are a lot of constituencies where the Conservative majority is not that high.

Of course, the Government are planning to make it harder to vote.

What the other parties really need to do is to start work now to identify their voters, potential voters, ensure that they have ID etc to vote and to get them out there to vote.

So many young people don't vote - and they are the ones who are going to be hit by this a lot. Older people are more likely to vote Conservative, are more likely to vote, are more spread out where as younger people tend to be more clustered in big cities, and there are more older people than younger people.

So the Conservatives have a lot of built in advantage in a FPTP electoral system as opposed to a system where the votes just all get put together and the person with most votes wins - like in Brexit.

This is how Brexit parties were able to just to identify voters and get them out to vote. This should have started.

Notonthestairs · 06/08/2022 10:19

Whilst the Conservatives are the party of choice for the majority of newspaper owners then they will remain the party of choice for many because the narrative will be written for them.

Why else would the Conservatives be so desperate to punish the BBC and Channel 4?

"Few understand this, but the air cover Tories get from Mail, Sun, Telegraph, Express acts as a multiplier of lies - and a giant comfort blanket - but @EdwardJDavey @Keir_Starmer, @NicolaSturgeon face a battalion of bollocks daily. The gap is immense."

twitter.com/davidyelland/status/1554526744517951488?s=21&t=gnLHfS17iPlZdy576KoTlw

Blair won be moving to the centre ground but also by cosying up to newspaper owners.

Having said that I think it can be possible to buck the system - see Mick Lynch.

My GS is 17 and lives with me. He is already on the electoral roll and can't wait for a chance to vote. If they sneak in a quick GE before he hits 18 he will be beside himself.

Aww that's lovely! Good on him. I remember the first time I voted back in early seventies, I felt so important like I was changing the world Grin

All fair points @cakeorwine. In all honesty I can’t speculate with any reasonable degree of certainty, certainly not if the next GE is still a couple of years off.

He will be thrilled to bits, he was excited enough when we filled in the form and his name was included. Oh to be so young and full of such enthusiasm.

"I have circled the latest possible point the Tories can call a General Election. Looks pretty rough."

Interesting chart from Bloomberg in tweet (originally tweeted by Allegra Stratton remember her?!).

It will be interesting to see whether Truss risks an Autumn election.

Notonthestairs · 06/08/2022 11:44

"Oh to be so young and full of such enthusiasm."

That is great, enthusiasm & engagement is exactly what we need. (I'm at the other end of the spectrum and feeling very weary of it all.)
