Hi, I hope this thread is in the right place. I suppose I’m being a bit nosey, but I just wondered what smells people like that may be considered strange?

I really like the faint smell of chlorine on your skin when you’ve been swimming, and that earthy smell from when it has rained on a hot day.

Swarfega ( might be spelt wrong) was an industrial bright green gel that my dad used to use to get grease and engine oil off his hands. I’d love a tub of that if they still make it.
warm wax jackets as worn by aforementioned dad.
I miss my dad today

That swarfega hand cleaner, was handy ect for engine oil and greese,

Anthisan.
Wood that is being sawn or drilled in (the hot wood smell).
Dry leaves in the autumn.

Windypants21 · 19/07/2022 17:50

Not the current version but when I was a child loved the smell of the inside of an empty packet of Maltesers. Not because it was empty ...but it just had an unusual pleasant smell.

My dogs blanket , even though it's a pong to others, I love it.

Cotswoldmama · 19/07/2022 17:56

Tarmac when it's been really hot and then rains.

MinglingFlamingo · 19/07/2022 18:02

Not a smell I love but I smell I rather like compared to everyone I know is agar being autoclaved. Rather niche I know but it smells like bakers yeast.

Also like petrol and that smell of the petrol station

MinglingFlamingo · 19/07/2022 18:02

Also French supermarkets have a nice and distinctive smell

AleynEivlys · 19/07/2022 18:05

Waterstones.

MangosteenSoda · 19/07/2022 18:06

Germolene smells amazing. I always wanted to eat it as a child.

ladydoris · 19/07/2022 18:06

big fat libraries, new books, rain on hot asphalt, pile of leaves in fall, rain on grass.

merryhouse · 19/07/2022 18:07

Wet dust, obviously
Blown-out candles
Coal, especially with freesias (granny's house)
The first hint of autumn on a summer holiday early morning
new plastic
new carpets
marker pens - I think they make them differently now though

Justleaveitblankthen · 19/07/2022 18:12

Oh I could smell the backs of the ears and deep inside of my dogs and cat all day long. Utter bliss!

username00 · 19/07/2022 18:12

Mine is a wet nappy. It's a nostalgic smell and all the happy memories of when my kids were babies 🤣 I don't often have to change any children but the occasional one when I'm babysitting

Ratonastick · 19/07/2022 18:25

i have a few. Fresh creosote, there was always someone doing their fence when I used to walk home from school in the summer. TCP which I associate with my Grandad as he firmly believed it could cure anything from a boil on your bum to the bubonic plague. And bleach. I love that smell when i come back into the bathroom an hour or so after I’ve bleached the loo. Has to be original or, at a push, ocean scented. None of this pine or lemon muck!

I know that smell and yes. But when used agar comes out the autoclave 😖

Horse manure, silage, horse food and horses themselves. Carr & Day hoof oil!

Love my own bodily stinks (even if it's 'bad', like farts and BO i'm impressed by my ability and nee to get a lungful) but hate other people's. Some exes armpits were good though.

My dad's socks after work - he used to try and disgust me with them but i pretended to like them, until one day I actually did!

Dog paws. A PP said they smell like biscuits but I think it's popcorn.

Love creosote, WD40, workshops smells.

Not petrol, though. Instant headache.

Popular ones I hate are vanilla and lavender. So many Body Shop Vanilla gift sets congealing in my cupboards!

WhyPaulMemory · 19/07/2022 18:33

This is a weird one, but very, very fresh horse poo! I used to ride as a child, and remember when hacking in a convoy if the horse in front pooed, you’d get a waft of it - a sort of very acrid, grassy smell, and oddly not unpleasant! Haven’t ridden for 30 years so not sure if I’d still like it…
