It's raining here (Devon). And has been cloudy all morning.

Maybe it will pick up a bit later.

Currently 28°C in Birmingham 🥵 due to reach 37°C this afternoon. Fans are already proving useless…

I have found freezing bottles of water to put in front them helpful. It’s worth a try?

It was 34 degrees here when I popped out about 11. It’s certainly hot, but not apocalyptically so, as screamed but the media. Although I accept I am lucky in that I’m not at work this and just loafing around in front of said fans is not the same as running around on a hospital ward or a school. The house feels cool enough to sustain life. I have been taking precautions, because one of my dogs has been critically ill and I haven’t nursed her through £6K of vets bills to have her flake out on me in a British summer, so perhaps it’s just good planning and being on holiday.

(Although next door are having a new kitchen and are taking up their kitchen floor with a hammer drill and chucking tiles in a skip. Chez Eeksteek is no the peaceful holiday idyl I would like, in case that makes anybody feel better!)

31 degrees in sunny Sunderland. 35 in the car.

AgathaX · 18/07/2022 14:12

39 in the shade and 50 in the sun in our south facing garden. Midlands.

will it make 40 degs C in UK?
A pp has already mentioned 40. We were at 38 an hour ago and I think other pps have mentioned 38 and 39.

Is that an “ Official “ 40 degs C or an anecdotal one?
In past have had garden thermometers read over 100 deg Fahrenheit when the forecast gave nowhere near that.
Needs to be from. Weather station rather than individual reading from in a car or garden where heat seems magnified.

Genehuntsfanclub · 18/07/2022 14:17

Full sun temperature in Staffs but still continues to rise.

The pigeons here are bonkers. They keep settling on the lawn and sunbathing!

LoveLabradors · 18/07/2022 14:19

38c here under the Humber and climbing. 42 forecast tomorrow. Hotter than further south down the East coast.

Puffalicious · 18/07/2022 14:21

Well, I feel so sorry for anyone above 30! I'm in Glasgow- 29- and have travelled down to the Ayrshire coast to get a nice breeze. It's just lovely. However, the city felt intense-as we packed up to leave I was sweating like mad. The water's freezing so that'll be good in a bit.

Stay cool as you can everyone.

medianewbie · 18/07/2022 14:21

Just popped to Co-op for icecream.
Rural so has petrol station attached. Ludicrously you can't pay at pump but have to queue with those buying their groceries (sometimes a trolley full as next shop is 10m away)
Was just pondering the person with a full horse box in full sun stopping to queue for AGES to buy themselves cold fizzy drinks. Poor horses, I thought. They paid for their drinks then they drove off FAST without paying for their fuel as staff then realised. Idiots ...

CharlotteRose90 · 18/07/2022 14:22

I’m in Manchester and it’s far too hot. 35 degrees currently. I put washing out 10 mins ago and it’s dried already.

Wow! That's brazen!

We're at 36 here. Cambridgeshire. My cat isn't impressed at all.

For anyone struggling, I find sitting with just your feet in a bowl or bucket of cool water helps a lot - a tip I picked up overseas where these temperatures and higher are the usual thing and water has to be used sparingly. Also, again to save water and if you haven't got a shady spot for a paddling pool, use the bath as a plunge pool - leave the plug in between uses so that the water can be reused by all the (clean) members of the family throughout the day and night. Just change the water when it becomes necessary - you're cooling off, not bathing in it.

Lanawashington · 18/07/2022 14:25

Currently 36 where I am in Somerset

amysaurus87 · 18/07/2022 14:27

It's 35 where I am at the moment. It's due to hit 37/38 by 5pm

Oblomov22 · 18/07/2022 14:27

Hot in Surrey, but not that hot. Total unnecessary drama.

LT2 · 18/07/2022 14:27

37 currently in Huntingdon

howaboutchocolate · 18/07/2022 14:28

It's 37 in Cambridgeshire so far and I'm dreading the nursery run. It's already hit 30 degrees in DDs bedroom so I'm not expecting great sleep tonight.

Oh you poor thing Flowers
Sounds absolutely dire.

Enb76 · 18/07/2022 14:29

37 just outside Cambridge. It is proper hot outside but the house inside is a full 15 degrees lower on the North side so we are ok.

HailAdrian · 18/07/2022 14:30

34 where I am in Yorkshire now, it feels nice but I don't envy anybody having to work outside in it for hours.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2022 14:31

A bit over 31 in the shade in Lancashire at the moment. But it seems to be quite dry heat at the moment which is good.
