Yes.

sunshineandshowers40 · 17/07/2022 09:16

Youngest is going. The older two will be home as their school is closed.

SpringRainbow · 17/07/2022 09:17

My kids school have made it very clear that they expect them in because attendance is very important.

My kids wants to go in because they schools has lots of fun things planned and they don’t want to miss out.

So far it looks like all/ most other parents are relieved that the schools will be open so all/ most of their friends will most likely be in.

So, yeah looks like I am sending them in really.

To be honest I am more worried about the journey there and back. Once they are actually at school they will be no cooler there than they would be at home.

Yes - we've been specifically told to send them, and told what steps they will be taking to keep them cool (using cooler classrooms, shading windows, no outdoor playtime).

AchillesLastStand · 17/07/2022 09:18

I’ll be sending my son in but it depends where you are in the country. We’re in a small village in North Staffs where max temp is 37/38. DS goes to a small school with only 16 in his class and in hot weather they keep them indoors during breaks.

If we were in a city in the red zone then no I don’t think I would be sending him in. I would prefer that the school closed at lunchtime so I could get him home before it peaks. What schools have to consider is what would some children be doing if schools closed, and that potentially could be more dangerous than them being in school.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 17/07/2022 09:23

DD2’s primary broke up on Friday so she’s home anyway & as I’ve had no communication from DD1’s secondary about relaxing the uniform I’m keeping her home on Monday. She got sunburned at sports day on Friday so that’s my excuse. She’ll be in on Tuesday as it’s end of term, own clothes & a 12pm finish. We’re in central London in a small flat but it’ll still be cooler here than at school. I work in a primary (again central London) & we’re in until 1 so all the children can get lunch (sandwiches only as the kitchen was already over 30 last week). It’s going to be awful though, it’s an old victorian building with no air conditioning that really retains the heat, each classroom is showing at least 4 degrees warmer than the outside temperature & the shade doesn’t hit the playground until after 2.

ComDummings · 17/07/2022 09:25

I’m tempted to keep them off. I don’t know though. I’m more worried about getting them home as here 3pm is smack bang in the middle of the hottest part of the day according to BBC weather. It’s a half an hour walk or a 10 minute drive, neither sound very appealing at 39 degrees! My car has no aircon.

Ds's school have planned a waterfight as their trip has been cancelled.

He will have to go to school as I have to go to work and try and keep the service users I work with as cool as possible.

BrambleRoses · 17/07/2022 09:30

I would play it by ear.

I certainly wouldn’t take promises of water fights as reassurance that they’ll be safe.

Nuisancepenguin · 17/07/2022 09:31

Yes.

MackenCheese · 17/07/2022 09:31

DS secondary school are closed Monday and Tuesday because of the heat. Reopening weds and Thurs for end of term stuff.

ToastofLandon · 17/07/2022 09:36

Yes, I’m working

Forpoxsake · 17/07/2022 09:39

If our school suggested a waterfight I’d definitely keep them home, it means they will definitely be outside at probably peak heat and will be out for longer than usual as they won’t feel quite how hot it is, more likely to get burnt if not wearing sunscreen (and lots might not use waterproof sunscreen) and then they’ll probably need to be outside to dry their clothes off

AlternativelyWired · 17/07/2022 09:39

Dd has a theme park trip with school on Tuesday. She's really looking forward to it but the thought of her queuing for hours in the blazing sun is making me think. Ds is at primary school and they have just said no outside play. He's unwell so unlikely to be going in anyway. He has asthma as do I and I'll struggle to do the school run in the heat as it sets my chest off.

milkysmum · 17/07/2022 09:50

Yes I'm at work. They are definitely going in.

pimlicoanna · 17/07/2022 09:56

Yes. But if they come out of school looking way too hot or upset on Monday then I'll rethink Tuesday. They are only 4 though.

BrambleRoses · 17/07/2022 09:56

@Forpoxsake that is my concern as well.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 17/07/2022 10:23

are the school still planning on doing a theme park trip ?

Getintoyou · 17/07/2022 10:30

Yes definitely, but dh is wfh so it would be nice if they could finish early as it wouldn't impact us. Then they could just chill out in front of the telly.

MarshaBradyo · 17/07/2022 10:32

Yes

I spent an afternoon there on Friday and it was warm but I noticed the area wasn’t hotter than home, there was in and out access, huge shaded area and paddling pools

It will be similar to home again on Monday / Tuesday. Dc inside or in shade with water play

Normally I would agree with you, however DS is in a specialist school and only 8 pupils in his class, and they have an outdoor area with a big shade sail they are going to use. It will be for 10 minutes max, but DS is so excited, expecially as they were all so upset the trip was cancelled.

TravellingSpoon · 17/07/2022 10:34

If DD's secondary school had suggested it that would definitely have been a no from me!

JudithHarper · 17/07/2022 10:35

Why wouldn't I? They are normal school days.

Twattergy · 17/07/2022 10:38

Yes DS will go to school. However @AlternativelyWired if the school was taking them to a theme park on Tuesday I don't think I'd send him, I'm very surprised they are doing that trip considering the weather (unless it is in an area where temps won't exceed 30.)

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 17/07/2022 10:39

If school is open why the hell wouldn't you?! Do u not trust the school with your pfb then?
