Just wondering what everyone’s doing

I’m thinking of sending but then will I send the day waiting for a text or call to collect early

so maybe should just not send

@MarshaBradyo oh yes definitely it does. But if temperatures really do hit late 30s/ 40, the advice is not to open windows or have a fan on, close curtains and blinds and not to go outside.

I think that many parents have assumed that because schools are open, it's all been risk assessed and we have made sure that it will be safe.

In reality, many HTs are scared of going against the DfE. Plus, many HTs sit in air conditioned offices and don't spend time in the classrooms so have absolutely no idea how it feels and do not listen to their staff.

Teachers can't tell parents this as we can't go against the advice of the HT. So we are putting a brave face on but in reality, we are dreading it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/07/2022 19:38

@bohorainbow same for me and my classroom, minus blinds. Friday was awful, kids moaning and nosebleeds galore.

We have been told by the head that we must be delivering lessons and not doing anything off curriculum. It's always the same and we do lessons up until the last day. I can just see my bottom set year 9 in 40 degrees heat concentrating and analysing poetry, then writing an essay!
I am dreading it

ApplesandBunions · 17/07/2022 19:39

Nah. No point. They'll learn fuck all and be too hot, so as I have the option of keeping them off I will.

For heavens sake I am getting sick of these threads/media whipping people up into frenzy.

These people saying kids should be off school......not everyone has the luxury of taking time off work or wfh.

It's two days of hot weather. Will I enjoy it? No. Will I be cautious? Yes. Will I crack on? ABSOLUTELY.

Well some do have a choice and it’s up to them, not you.

And there it is! The faux confusion I knew would be on this thread before I even opened it!

Quite.

Yes there are some parents who believe schools have done a lot more than they actually have. School staff will all go in and try to make it bearable for the children, but realistically there's not much we can actually do to.

A child passed out in the heat a few days ago and they had to call an ambulance.

bohorainbow · 17/07/2022 20:13

@Beelezebub and I'm assuming that was when temperatures were a whole ten degrees lower than what is predicted tomorrow and Tuesday?

It's scary.

EcoCustard · 17/07/2022 20:18

Ours are putting bowls of water in front of fans. Water in front of electrical appliances doesn’t fill me with confidence in reception & ks1 classes. Dc1 says there are no fans and it’s been mid twenties for the last couple of weeks and hot. I have little confidence that they have procured 7+ fans since Friday.

gluenotsoup · 17/07/2022 20:22

Two are going in, one with complex needs and disabilities is staying at home where I can keep her cool. Seizure inducing heat is not good.

User3456 · 17/07/2022 20:23

I would keep off if you're in a position to and the kids are ok with it.
Not everyone has the choice childcare-wise - but if you do and the kids are happy enough to stay home, do that.
Luckily DS broke up last week, I am relieved.

Yes. I have severe reservations about sending mine in. But it’s one day and then term is finished.

I really hope they're ok.

Namechanged12344 · 18/07/2022 06:43

Reading these threads I'm now feeling guilty about sending mine in!

bohorainbow · 18/07/2022 07:31

Don't feel guilty. School is open. Parents have to work.

But if you have the option to keep them off then you might as well because they'll be much safer at home.

OhamIreally · 18/07/2022 09:10

Yes but I'm taking the unusual step of driving her in and am going to collect in the car as well. It's a 20 minute walk with a heavy back pack.

TheWristBoundLatexBitch · 18/07/2022 10:47

I've kept my older two off as they have a 30 minute walk each way.

The fact that the attendance lines inbox was full at 7.50 tells me there are a lot of others doing the same.

Namechanged12344 · 18/07/2022 14:59

Ended up leaving work early and getting them early...

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 18/07/2022 15:17

Kept dc off today, they have complex needs and have struggled over the weekend with the heat. They attend a special school which has decided to close to all students tomorrow.

We normally walk too, similar distance & up hill all the way home so I'll be driving. I think it's the least I can do for her after sweltering all day 😁

Ellyfinsmum · 18/07/2022 16:17

I sent my 5 year old in this morning and had a call by 11 to come and collect him. He was bright red and exhausted from the heat. He said there was only 1 small fan in the classroom and it didn’t reach where he was. Will be keeping him at home tomorrow.

Jalepenojello · 18/07/2022 16:31

I had to pick mine up at 9:30 &10:30 as they couldn’t hack it, I’m sure they weren’t the only ones

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 18/07/2022 16:33

Mine were fine, turns out the youngest was in the only class room that has air con so he felt lovely and cool when he came out . My older year 6 said it wasn't bad at all in his class.

They had the sprinklers on when the kids came out so they all spent some time jumping in them while us parents sweated away waiting for them 🤣

MarshaBradyo · 18/07/2022 16:34

All fine here

Impressed by set up with massive cooling wet king sheet sized towels hanging from overhang

It all felt cool and lots of water, dc looked fine

Walk home was hot but quite fast as presence of friend helped hugely

I'm keeping them off tomorrow too. Although H has pissed me off with "I wish I had parents like you growing up"

  1. It's two days
  2. His parents took him to Disney land whilst I was an only child to a single mum.
  3. I NEVER usually let them have days off, I'm a "unless your throwing up or dying then you go to school" parent.
