Just wondering what everyone’s doing

I’m thinking of sending but then will I send the day waiting for a text or call to collect early

so maybe should just not send

Yes, I’m sending the dc to school as normal. DH is also going to work as normal in a factory that will be really hot, but it’s not really an option for him not to go is it? No work =no pay and I can’t see his boss being overly happy if the whole workforce decided not to turn up.

Namechanged12344 · 17/07/2022 16:54

State primary in both days as school is in open and taking measures, allowed to wear PE kits, access to water, no vigorous PE lessons etc. If I wasn't working I might have kept them at home but we both are plus we got 6 weeks off coming up!

RockandRollsuicide · 17/07/2022 16:54

I'm aghast at the lack of continuity again over school.

All school In the ,"extreme emergency zone" should have 3 options.

Go till 12.30
Go all day
Don't go.

All uniform relaxed!
Our pe kit is a man made fabric? It's no cooler at all?

@Cleothecat75

Your husband's boss should be making sure his factory is functioning under safe conditions

JudithHarper · 17/07/2022 10:35

Why wouldn't I? They are normal school days.

And there it is! The faux confusion I knew would be on this thread before I even opened it!

Oblomov22 · 17/07/2022 16:57

Of course. They are now finishing early apparently.

CrapBucket · 17/07/2022 17:06

Dc1 high school is open but has said if you want to stay off, report absence using special code and it will be authorised. And DON'T GO TO THE PARK OR LAKE. But I'm sure they all will...

DC2 school will probably do the same.

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/07/2022 17:08

Ours is giving the option to collect at lunchtime but school will remain open. Our prom is going ahead in an air conditioned part is the school.

CreatingHavoc · 17/07/2022 17:14

With my eldest who is autistic and does not cope well with heat at all (she was hysterical last Monday at 28 degrees) and my youngest who doesn't drink anywhere near enough at the best of times and is prone to uti's because of it, I am 100% keeping them off. Its not like they'll be missing out on anything major. Nothing planned at school for those days and they can still go in for the last 3 days so can't see it being a problem.

ThePumpkinPatch · 17/07/2022 17:17

I'm in North Yorkshire, not far from York which is forecast 42°C, yet DD's crappy, one step away from closing since Inadequate OFSTED report haven't bothered to email or text us about what the plan is! I want to keep her off but DD wants to go!

Cherrysoup · 17/07/2022 17:28

Our schools are closing at midday, mostly to ensure free school meal kids still get fed and of course, so our attendance do drop like a stone.

Yodaisawally · 17/07/2022 17:28

Dts have their y6 leavers party tomorrow they will be gutted if it doesn't go ahead. At the moment school is open, they'll be indoors for break which the kids think is crazy as it is much poker outside in the shady field, huge weeping willows, than in the classroom.

DH is SLT at the local secondary, they've just announcing closing at 11.20 tomorrow which he thinks is madness, they have a/c but a large proportion of the kids travel in by public transport.

CoffeeWithCheese · 17/07/2022 17:31

Schools around here seem to be giving the choice of stay off, do the morning or go in as normal but with uniform suspended and ice pops provided.

I've given the kids the choice - they want to stay home, and it's about 50/50 among the parents who are going in or not. It's not even our last week, we go partially into next week for the end of term stuff but they're not really covering much work at the moment so I'm beyond being bothered as long as the option had been there for ALL (not some selected bunch) to go in if needed/wanted.

bristolpities · 17/07/2022 17:34

Yep. School is open but we have been told there will be no outside break. I can't see school being any hotter than home. We are only a 15 min walk away though so I guess if people have a longer journey there is an argument for it. I can't see our school closing, the forecast is 37 and 40 here but I suspect it won't reach that temp in real feel just like today hasn't felt anything like the 31 on our forecast today and it's just 2 days.

CreatingHavoc · 17/07/2022 17:36

People who are saying it's cooler in the shade outside than indoors, this isn't true if you plan correctly at home. All our windows and blinds have been closed since 9am and we have indoor and outdoor thermometers. Our indoor reading has been consistently lower than the outdoor in the shade reading all day. Our front room is particularly cool at the moment as it's facing our shady garden and only gets the sun in the morning.

I would not put my kids through being at school these next two days when I can monitor their water intake and their activities in a cooler climate at home. We will not be going outside at all.

biggirlpantson · 17/07/2022 17:44

We broke up Thursdays last week.. now camping in wales! Lovely cool breeze today but the temperatures rising 🥴

SunflowerSmith · 17/07/2022 17:45

I'm almost certain I'm not, we're in the red zone and the school is really old with poor ventilation, it has massive windows with only small openers at the top.

They've said it's non uniform which is silly as the gingham school dresses or shorts are as cool as anything else.

They've also already bought their books home so it's only going to be crafts and films until they finish on Wednesday.

At least at home they can go in the paddling pool and lie around the house naked which will be much cooler than sitting, fully clothed in a room full of 30 people.

AmmarettoSours · 17/07/2022 17:55

I'll be keeping mine home. The high school for my older 2 has air con but it's an hour walk home and the route has zero shade. Taxis fully booked & bus route is longer than walk.
Youngest school may be closed as they don't have Air con

anneyc · 17/07/2022 18:21

We’re amber zone and DS’s secondary school have been monitoring classroom temperatures over the weekend. Even with fans blowing etc the temperature in some classrooms was already high today at 30 degrees so they’ve decided to close tomorrow and half day Tuesday.

AlternativelyWired · 17/07/2022 19:03

Trains near us (Northern) are cancelling some services and advising people not to travel unless essential. Many secondary kids here get the train.

Minimalme · 17/07/2022 19:06

Eldest dc in 8.30 till 12.30.

Middle dc at a special secondary and not going in at has all the resilience of a lettuce leaf in the heat.

Youngest dc I don't know! School are adamant they have to come in but we drive there and my car is small and 18 years old and I think it will overheat. It does it a lot anyway.

I'm not sure I can bear to have him at home in the heat. He is constantly bored and mithering for activities.

HappyBinosaur · 17/07/2022 19:12

I have to work so my youngest will be going in. My older dc have already finished.

HappyBinosaur · 17/07/2022 19:14

In fact if my son’s school closes he’ll have to come to work with me as I have to go to work tomorrow and Tuesday afternoon regardless of the weather.

bohorainbow · 17/07/2022 19:26

I am a teacher in the red zone. My classroom is south facing with a whole wall of windows looking out on to the playground. We have flimsy blinds that let in the light and two skylights with no blinds. Obviously no air conditioning.

On Friday it was 24 outside but 29 in my classroom.

I am really really concerned about Monday and Tuesday and I really hope that the parents will keep their children off as honestly, I am unable to keep them safe in 40 degree heat.

Those of you saying that it's no different to being at home are wrong. I am sitting at home now with a fan on watching the TV and i feel much more comfortable here than I did on Friday in my classroom.

The children are hot, miserable and whiny. We had nosebleeds and sent a few home with high temperatures. There will be no learning going on as they cannot concentrate in such conditions.

I cannot believe schools have been told to stay open. It will not be fun. We cannot make it fun. We'll be keeping them inside at break and lunch because there is no shade outside. So 8.40 to 3.15 in the same stuffy classroom with one drinking tap that gives out lukewarm water.

Keep them off if you can.

MarshaBradyo · 17/07/2022 19:29

Boho it depends on the set up. We had an afternoon at the school on Friday and dc were happy, and to was same temp as home. But it’s nursery and big space and open with lots of shade as hard structure awning hanging over
