@R1408 If you have the luxury, then all power to you. The issue is telling people on these thread they are doing this, many using really dramatic language and then others in two minds feeling guilty they are bringing their kids to school.

This is like the Bog Roll shortage of 2020 all over again. People are posting now saying they are really worried. It's not even happened yet. That worry is unnecessary for most because it's a situation you can't really do much about apart from take precautions

School is still open & they're allowed to wear their own clothes to be cooler.

Luckily DD's classroom is the only one with air con but it'll be v hot at lunchtime/play time because there's no shade in the play ground.

School trips going ahead here and school open as normal. Lots of the trips are residential and to London. Chester Zoo will be closed but the theme park trip is going ahead. No idea about the primary school but ds is ill anyway.

whataloadabullocks · 17/07/2022 14:10

Yes. More concerned about the PM pick up though, last year the tarmac was melting and bubbling and I hated driving through it.

Figgygal · 17/07/2022 14:12

Yes theyre going in
I wonder how many of these kids brimg kept home from school because its unsafe will end up at a park or beach all day "making memories"

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 17/07/2022 14:15

One of mine is going in as they will wear shorts and t-shirt. The other who's autistic and will only wear full school uniform including a blazer, isn't.

They won't go outside in this weather. They will probably put TV on for them at lunch time.

ChilleyCheesecake · 17/07/2022 14:21

We will be spending the day at home.
I will be very surprised if schools are open Tuesday.
I've read a few posts where teachers are worrying how they'll manage and the conditions of their classroom(s). It sounds like some children getting ill with heat stroke is inevitable. They will surely have to close them Tues if ambulances are being called to schools due to this heat.
Ridiculous they closed schools for months at a time because of a cold covid, but won't close it a few days early with an extreme weather warning, especially when very little is done academically over the last few days.

RockandRollsuicide · 17/07/2022 14:59

@whataloadabullocks

Tarmac melting and bubbling?? How can a car drive through that?

RockandRollsuicide · 17/07/2022 15:00

Chilly I agree.

The problem is we don't have any idea about unexpected consequences of this heat! We don't know what will happen!

EcoCustard · 17/07/2022 15:05

Mine are staying home 3 Dc in primary school. We have a pool so will be in that for a while and then in the house for Lego or a movie and ice cream when it gets very hot. Water fights too and camp out under the stars. They didn’t do much last week, films and plays and crafting. School have said they won’t be doing much so they can do that at home which is their only response to the weather warning. I am home so will have fun & enjoy, keep them hydrated.

Thebeastofsleep · 17/07/2022 15:09

Our car overheated and is now in the garage waiting to be fixed so our kids won't be in school until it is as we have no way to get them there. So sort of because of the heat, but not in the way you'd expect!

ClocksGoingBackwards · 17/07/2022 15:11

I hope all our children at the school I work at will be sent in, we still have all the fun leavers/end of year events to do!

Most of our classrooms just happen to be positioned so that they aren’t in direct sunlight so will be cooler than many peoples homes. Our school has said that children can wear their PE kits instead of uniform if they want to, but the girls that wear summer dresses would be better off in those.

EcoCustard · 17/07/2022 15:12

@ChilleyCheesecake i tend to agree my kids were unable to go to school for months for public health. Yet at the end of term it’s important they attend. They watched two films last week, watched a play performance from the older school kids and had craft time. I doubt they will miss anything pertinent. I understand the not closing as many have work commitments but as I don’t mon/Tuesday they can stay home.

saddowizca · 17/07/2022 15:15

My DD is 14 and her school have said that they will have them in air conditioned classrooms for those two days. She loves school and I trust them to do the right thing. She will get an air-conditioned tube to school, but if they tube stops working she can get the bus, or we can pick her up.

RockandRollsuicide · 17/07/2022 15:21

All those people "trusting" the teachers and the school

Each school set up will be different but there really is only so much they can do!
It's a huge responsibility for anyone to try and keep 30 children safe in an national unprecedented emergency??

I'm aghast that Dominic rabb has said we need to be resilient and the Shadow education person said "school is where children need to be".

Are they on this planet??
It's the end of term ffs.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 17/07/2022 15:27

Yes mine are going in

Sittininafield · 17/07/2022 15:28

I’m not worried about school - but the hour long bus journey in a bus that breaks down fairly often is a worry!

Wowijustgiveup · 17/07/2022 15:35

My kids are home ed anyway but if they were still at school i would probably keep then home. They are red headed and 2 have asthma made worse by heat. Oh and the 13 year old faints as soon as she heats up (and had done since she was a toddler!).

so we will be home by a fan !

Ballbagisnotmyname · 17/07/2022 15:37

My daughter will be staying off - she’s had covid and is currently wiped out due to the heat, coupled with a 15 minute walk to the bus and a 20 minute bus ride there and back it’s not worth making her feel worse, I’m very lucky that I wfh anyway but friends with kids sadly don’t have that option

Agree - what does trusting the teachers mean?

I work in a school and all the teachers are worried about how hot and unsafe it will be, and how we will deal with the inevitable heat-stressed children.

Teachers aren't choosing to keep schools open.

Beelezebub · 17/07/2022 15:49

One’s going in, we’re keeping one home.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/07/2022 15:49

Going to be 42 degrees here. I’m dreading it. Wouldn’t be sending my kids in.

andpeggy1 · 17/07/2022 15:52

I'm so confused. Havnt all schools broken for the summer now????
