Just wondering what everyone’s doing

I’m thinking of sending but then will I send the day waiting for a text or call to collect early

so maybe should just not send

We're in the red zone, so no. As others have said, it's the journey to and from which concerns me more.

Those of you scoffing, you should check out OhYouBadBadKitten's threads in the weather section.

Not that I expect it'll change your minds Halo

Jalepenojello · 17/07/2022 10:46

If school is open, they’re going.

Nomaj · 17/07/2022 10:48

I’m keeping mine at home. I’m much more able to keep them cool at home than they can at school. They are just going to be miserable and watching movies most of the day at school. I can WFH around them and they can go back on Wednesday-Friday for end of term stuff.

Our school has given us option's thankfully, go or don't is fine.

One teacher and 30 small DC , all suffering in heat,it's going to be an enoiurmous responsibility on the teachers!
Even the absolute best, highest first aid trained teacher will struggle to make sure 30 youngests are all drinking enough!

I'm going to see how did fairs today, and then see about tomorrow.
I'd prefer to keep her off but she's desperate to go in!!

TokyoSushi · 17/07/2022 10:52

Yes. Ours are allowed to go in non uniform Mon & Tues.

Soubriquet · 17/07/2022 10:55

I’m not. Their classroom gets hot enough without the heat of 30 other children adding to it.

DaisyDozyDee · 17/07/2022 10:56

Secondary are learning from home for Monday at least. Primary is open, so youngest be going in, but our route is low risk. I wouldn’t make the same decision for an hour’s journey with waiting at bus stops in full sun as I would for a ten minute walk, mostly in the shade.

yomellamoHelly · 17/07/2022 11:02

No. Worried about the walk to and from as much as anything.

They were closing early and putting work online anyway, so will say that she'll complete anything they post.

My classroom is always 5 degrees or so hotter than outside, but we're open as usual. Think it's crazy.

FreezyFreezy · 17/07/2022 11:02

Yes. They're going in shorts and T-shirts with a hat, sunglasses and sun cream on.

I still have to work - the school I'm currently working in is remaining open and, although it means we'll be uncomfortable, it means I get paid. As a supply teacher, I only get paid for the days that I work and we can't afford to lose money, especially this close to the summer holidays.

loulouljh · 17/07/2022 11:03

Yes. We cannot allow kids to wimp off for any reason. Resilience and all that...

I know the sarcasm and all that but will you keep your dc home?

out of interest

R1408 · 17/07/2022 11:07

Monday, no. Tuesday possibly but collecting at 12.

upupstuck · 17/07/2022 11:07

Nope. More so because of the journey home than anything else. But I have 2 in primary and 1 in senior and I am keeping them all home.

Pyewhacket · 17/07/2022 11:08

Yes, my 14 yr son, he'll probably want to play cricket. Met River Police have already given them a lecture about buggering about and tombstoning into the Thames following a bunch of lads who jumped off Tower Bridge.

OffalThingsHappen · 17/07/2022 11:09

Hell no. It's a severe weather warning. If it was snow they would have closed. UK buildings are not built to handle the heat, I don't care if other countries function in higher temps and I don't care if the school fines me either.

ComDummings · 17/07/2022 09:25

I’m tempted to keep them off. I don’t know though. I’m more worried about getting them home as here 3pm is smack bang in the middle of the hottest part of the day according to BBC weather. It’s a half an hour walk or a 10 minute drive, neither sound very appealing at 39 degrees! My car has no aircon.

This is my main concern. We have a similar walk time home and no car.

I completely trust the staff at school to do their absolute best, but it's still going to be very uncomfortable for them in their greenhouse of a school.

minisoksmakehardwork · 17/07/2022 11:24

"What schools have to consider is what would some children be doing if schools closed, and that potentially could be more dangerous than them being in school."

This is exactly why I expect our secondary will stay open. We have a high number of vulnerable students and a river running through our town. We've had the rivers talk this week after a number of students were found truanting and engaging in risky behaviours.

The primary schools have put out that they're waiting on cobra meeting to make a final decision. Again, lots of vulnerable children who could be in a worse position if school closes.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 17/07/2022 11:25

Youngest DC school is optional. So youngest DC will be staying home (has SEN) much cooler at home with a pool to dip in and out of before peak hours, ice cream to eat and a fan. Eldest DC school is open, however eldest DC will not be attending as has severe asthma and has to travel in the heat on a crowded public bus for 15mins each way and sit in a hot classroom with 30 others so na I’m keeping them home.

For heavens sake I am getting sick of these threads/media whipping people up into frenzy.

These people saying kids should be off school......not everyone has the luxury of taking time off work or wfh.

It's two days of hot weather. Will I enjoy it? No. Will I be cautious? Yes. Will I crack on? ABSOLUTELY.

dottiedodah · 17/07/2022 11:33

I think to keep them at home .Teachers will not be able to police 30 youngsters drinking habits .Children are not reliable in making sure they have enough to drink ! Plus getting there and back .End of term so unlikely to miss much .Surely trips can be rescheduled ?

Eslteacher06 · 17/07/2022 11:37

Tbf op, your post has been quite moderate compared to some 'HUNDRES AND THOUSANDS WILL DIIIIIIE'.

Eslteacher06 · 17/07/2022 11:37

*hundreds ffs lol

If you have the luxury of keeping them off though, why not?
It's not like they're going to be missing any education.
Teachers will be glad of having a few less children to try to care for.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/07/2022 11:43

They have both just finished up, but if they hadn't they would be.

Rockbird · 17/07/2022 11:47

Eldest has already broken up, youngest will go in on Monday and I guess we'll take it day by day. I work in a junior school and we're allowing children to go at lunchtime if parents want so we'll see.
