I'm so confused. Havnt all schools broken for the summer now????

No

Soubriquet · 17/07/2022 15:55

My dc’s school doesn’t close till 22nd July

Macaroni46 · 17/07/2022 15:57

@andpeggy1 if only! We don't break up until Thursday.
Usually I'm very anti keeping kids off school but as teacher on this occasion I'm really worried. My classroom is like a greenhouse. Three walls made entirely of glass and the temperature in there was hideous last week let alone next week. I'm worried about keeping 30 little people safe (age 5&6) let alone my self (menopausal & overweight). I'd like the option of them going home at lunchtime.

You're not confused, you are just assuming your experience is universal and can't be bothered googling. Most state schools in England, other than Leicestershire, go to around 21 July each year depending on what day that is. Ours technically finish on Thursday but that's an inset day so last day is Wednesday.

YesitsJacqueline · 17/07/2022 15:58

Yes if course , they have missed enough school
It's always keep them off these days , too hot too cold covid
What people do with their own kids is up to them but there's always the social media validation required , its cringey

WatermelonWaveclub · 17/07/2022 15:59

Yes. My DD's primary is letting them wear PE kit or their own clothes, they have plans for water play and making use of the cool woodland area. Plus lots of fun as it's the last week of term.

All those people "trusting" the teachers and the school

Each school set up will be different but there really is only so much they can do!
It's a huge responsibility for anyone to try and keep 30 children safe in an national unprecedented emergency??

I'm aghast that Dominic rabb has said we need to be resilient and the Shadow education person said "school is where children need to be".

Are they on this planet??
It's the end of term ffs.

I can see his point to an extent.

DSC school is closed. There are group chats amongst the DC friends about going out and playing football. Parents will be at work.

I have the week off so DSC won't be going out, but for older DC who would be at home on their own, yes school would probably be best tbh.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 17/07/2022 16:02

Some of us won't be out 'making memories' or posting anything about it on social media.

I agree pp need to think through what happen to dc if they close. Possibly young and left alone etc

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/07/2022 16:03

and I trust them to do the right thing*😂

Speaking as someone who was a teacher for 26 years l wouldn’t trust senior management to do anything. They don’t give a shit about your child’s well being. The teachers might, but they have to do as they are told.

Normally I would agree with you, however DS is in a specialist school and only 8 pupils in his class, and they have an outdoor area with a big shade sail they are going to use. It will be for 10 minutes max, but DS is so excited, expecially as they were all so upset the trip was cancelled.

Yes, water play at my DD's school is under shade. School also have ice lollies for the DC.

WatermelonWaveclub · 17/07/2022 16:06

I think the worst bit will be our 20 minute walk home (plus my 20 min walk there to collect) but sure we'll survive!

Grumpybutfunny · 17/07/2022 16:06

Monday yes but I'm getting more and more tempted to keep him off on Tuesday to go to the beach.

MinnieMountain · 17/07/2022 16:06

DS is going in. His school has sent a reminder that summer uniform includes shorts and dresses/ skirts and explained what measures they’ll be taking.

chickma · 17/07/2022 16:13

Yes. We have to work so have no choice really. Their schools are open, DS can wear PE kit, DD's school uniform policy has been 'relaxed' although I'm not sure what that means specifically. They'll have suncream, extra drinks. Not much else we can do. I think I'll collect them in the car on my way home from work to save them walking in the heat.

Caramac555 · 17/07/2022 16:14

One is going in, one is staying home due to SEN and his inability to cope with heat, and because his dad can work from home.

Our hometown gets very hot in heatwaves

pastabest · 17/07/2022 16:20

Mine will absolutely be going in. It's a small rural school where most year groups only have about 10 children and 95% of the children have a maximum 5 min walk to school.

There are fewer than 100 children in the whole school including the nursery classes, a huge playing field with plenty of shade and due to covid lots of sheltered outside learning areas (although the shelter was provided due to the high chance of rain rather than sun!).

It's an old victorian school building so will be beautifully cool inside.

I'll lather them in suncream before they go and they will have big floppy hats to wear outside. The school is very good at encouraging them to drink water and there is even provision for them to keep it in the fridge at the moment.

They are far better off there than being badly supervised by me while I also try and work from home.

ellieboolou · 17/07/2022 16:27

Third email from school started we can keep them off if we choose, this is after saying that they must attend or it would be marked as unauthorised.

I'm keeping mine home as I'm not working and attendance figures have already been done. Also they both really don't want to go as said their classrooms are boiling.

Ours have got another 7 days - break up on 26th July....

ILIWYS · 17/07/2022 16:39

DD's school (secondary in south east) is closing for the two days

LondonJax · 17/07/2022 16:39

I've got DS a couple of instant ice packs and he'll have loads of water plus 8 hour sun screen on (50 factor).

ThePumpkinPatch · 17/07/2022 16:43

SpringRainbow · 17/07/2022 09:17

My kids school have made it very clear that they expect them in because attendance is very important.

My kids wants to go in because they schools has lots of fun things planned and they don’t want to miss out.

So far it looks like all/ most other parents are relieved that the schools will be open so all/ most of their friends will most likely be in.

So, yeah looks like I am sending them in really.

To be honest I am more worried about the journey there and back. Once they are actually at school they will be no cooler there than they would be at home.

Despite being in a class room with >30 kids in?! I doubt it

Chesneyhawkes1 · 17/07/2022 16:43

DH and I are off work and DSS wants to stay home.

I said yes, DH said he should go in. So we will see 😂

Crackercrazy · 17/07/2022 16:45

No. Secondary school will be closed. Primary say it’s up to individual but any absence will be authorised so my DC will be at home.
Its not just the heat of the day, but the nights are going to be really uncomfortable (where we are) so I doubt they’ll sleep well.

You make a great point. We had quite a few children who were grumpy and tired last week due to the hot weather. I expect there will more this week as it's just so uncomfortable and difficult to sleep.
