If you're in a "RED ZONE" are you considering keeping your dc off school?

Hi,

Just that really. Our area is likely going to be in the high 30's, possibly 40 on Monday/Tuesday and I'm not sure what to do.

What are your thoughts?

Yes I am

BettyOBarley · 15/07/2022 13:38

If school stays open then I'll send them in.
I'm in the (non-airconditioned 😭) office all day Monday anyway, so couldn't keep them off.
They are 5 & 8.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 15/07/2022 13:40

Also considering it, 40 degrees predicted. DS school currently closed due to suspected gas leak, doesn't sound like good combo with the heat.

Caveat, DS has 35 mins walk each way, other DCs have an hour walk/bus journey

I'd speak to the school about what their plans are/what accomodations they're making and go from there.

Also depends how cool your house is, for some people school will be better.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 15/07/2022 13:42

Mine are secondary, DS finishes Wednesday what so don't expect he'll be doing any work anyway. Others don't break up till Friday

RavenT · 15/07/2022 13:43

We have been told school uniform and school shoes required (primary).
I queried this and was told that some parents might send their children in in unacceptable clothes (not properly covered) so they feel this is safer,.....
The mind boggles how they work this shit out. Ridiculous

I said if I send DS in with his PE kit on you're not going to send him home are you? The answer was 'no'.

🙄

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/07/2022 13:43

I’m questioning it- can’t imagine home is any more pleasant than school. I’m hoping they at least have an own clothes announcement

Preeeschooler · 15/07/2022 13:44

Nope, we still have to go to work and I can’t imagine our house will be any cooler!

SpottyStripyDuvet · 15/07/2022 13:44

No because the school gave sent a letter with very sensible measures around wearing non uniform, having playtime in the more shaded areas of the premises, encouraging children to drink, discouraging running games etc.

Crazycatlady83 · 15/07/2022 13:45

Probably for Monday, we have an air conditioning unit and the paddling pool in the shade so I think we would be able to cope better than in class!

ComDummings · 15/07/2022 13:47

I am considering yes. I really don’t want to as the last week is always fun but I just don’t think it’s fair to have 30 kids and a teacher crammed into a classroom on days over 30 degrees. I’m a bit annoyed the school haven’t even addressed it yet - not even an email to say they’re keeping an eye on the forecast or anything.

VincaBlue · 15/07/2022 13:48

Dd is 15. I've said she can take the day off if she likes. She's got good attendance and worked hard all year. Just done 2 weeks work experience. I don't think they'll learn much next week. She'd be in from Wednesday. I have a feeling she'll want to go and see her friends though. Her choice

Swearwolf · 15/07/2022 13:48

Ours have just announced they are closing!

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 13:48

Definitely keeping mine at home then i can keep my own eye on drinks and heat and not being silly!
It's also getting them there and back,I don't want to be driving or walking in that heat!
Traffic is dreadful around here ,the fumes....bad tempers!
I feel so sorry for the pressure staff will be under to just keep them safe!

Twizbe · 15/07/2022 13:50

Im sending mine but we've had an email from school to say they can wear shorts and white or PE t shirt on Monday. They want them in bright summer clothes on Tuesday so that's shorts and t shirt as well.

Tbh his school is an old Victorian building with thick walls and high ceilings. I imagine his classeroom will be much cooler than our home anyway.

loafandleaf · 15/07/2022 13:50

My kids aren't quite school age, but considering I'm planning on staying inside with the curtains shut with them all day I absolutely would keep them home if they were at school!

Kbrjdjsj · 15/07/2022 13:52

I’m happy that my DCs primary school will manage it well but I’m not so sure about my teen DCs school especially as they are intending on having a cooking class…

TokyoSushi · 15/07/2022 13:54

If school is open, I'll send them, I would imagine it'll only be similarly hot at home anyway.

I am from a much hotter country and I find the UK attitude of 'the sun is very hot so let's strip off and expose as much of our skin as possible to the dangerously hot rays' baffling!

So many parents here think protecting your kids from the sun is somehow cruel, and you 'must' wear non-covering clothes in summer instead of cool loose and covering clothes.

School uniform in most cases I've seen is not going to be great in a heatwave, but I've seen parent choices that are worse so I sympathize with the schools position!

Yodaisawally · 15/07/2022 14:01

Dts are in y6 and there will be many tear if they can't go in, I'll send them. If they EYFS or KS1 I wouldn't.

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/07/2022 14:04

Just had an email from school that guidance will come through on Sunday. My DS is a year six leaver with lots of events next week that I hope can go ahead but we'll see

WaitinginVain · 15/07/2022 14:05

No, but Year 6 DC goes on a school residential on Monday and I am concerned about that.

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/07/2022 14:05

Also to add, my son's classroom has air conditioning. Our house doesn't. He'd probably be better off at school

BeerPongChampion · 15/07/2022 14:07

My daughters secondary school has said they haven’t had to wear blazers for the last week or so. They’ve now said no ties required for next week, that’ll sort it, they’ll all be cold without their tie. 🤣
I’ve told my child, she doesn’t have to go in but at the moment she wants to, to say bye to everyone and a couple of teachers that are leaving that she really likes. Very little work done this week so I can’t see them doing anything next week. Older son had finished college already.

Bobbybobbins · 15/07/2022 14:08

My DS school has just messaged to say they are closing Monday and Tuesday
