If you're in a "RED ZONE" are you considering keeping your dc off school?

Hi,

Just that really. Our area is likely going to be in the high 30's, possibly 40 on Monday/Tuesday and I'm not sure what to do.

What are your thoughts?

My daughters secondary school has said they haven’t had to wear blazers for the last week or so. They’ve now said no ties required for next week, that’ll sort it, they’ll all be cold without their tie. 🤣
I’ve told my child, she doesn’t have to go in but at the moment she wants to, to say bye to everyone and a couple of teachers that are leaving that she really likes. Very little work done this week so I can’t see them doing anything next week. Older son had finished college already.

Ours said the same 😂 however they’re also allowed to keep their shirts untucked so problem solved!

My boys in high school have activity days next week! Monday is a theme park and Tuesday is climbing and canoeing etc. both days outside all day. I know they won’t cancel because of the money aspect but have said to bring a water bottle and hat.

My daughter has to do her d of e hike!!

she has been told if she pulls out she is letting the team down as no one to replace her. It’s ridiculous.

She's not in the army! Refer them to those poor soldiers who died of heat exhaustion, out on exercise. I absolutely would not allow this and would report the leader,on behalf of other children with less sensible parents.

Red warning here, I'm keeping mine off.

LunaLoveFood · 15/07/2022 16:48

We've just had an email from ds1 school to say it's up to parents and children will have Ana authorised absence if not in (special school)

Ds2 school have cancelled sports day. Both dc will be in as I work in a a school that's open and dh will also be working.

PancakesWithCheese · 15/07/2022 16:49

No, because I have to go to work.

ReneBumsWombats · 15/07/2022 16:53

If you talk to the other DoE parents, I can't imagine they think it's a good idea either. I can't understand how the DoE leaders can justify this.

bestbeforedateexpired · 15/07/2022 16:54

Red Zone here. Our school announced yesterday that it will be closed on Mon and Tues and run live virtual lessons.

10dozenCubes · 15/07/2022 16:55

We'll see what it feels like on those days. Our secondary will move online and primary will be BAU. I find it a bit of a shame that secondary is going online so close to the holidays, it's not really settling a great example.

Once again, my reposte would be, would they carry on if there was a red warning with a forecast of snow or high winds? Hot weather can be just as dangerous and actually more so. At least if you stay indoors when it snows or is windy, you will probably be ok as long as a tree doesn't fall on top of you. But you can't really avoid the heat unless you have aircon (which contributes to the problem of climate change so isn't really a solution).

Lovemusic33 · 15/07/2022 16:57

I don’t really understand how staying home will make any difference? Surely it’s going to be the same temp at school as it is at home? As long as the school are taking measures to keep the kids cool I don’t see a issue. Schools here are being relaxed with uniform, kids are allowed to take water bottles into classes, being provided with shade at break times and fans in classrooms where possible.

Pinklimey · 15/07/2022 16:57

No. Fun school trip on Monday; own clothes goodbye day on Tuesday.

Setting an example about what?

It really depends I think. Some schools are light and airy and have big windows you can open and get air in. And some houses are heat traps.

10dozenCubes · 15/07/2022 16:59

Setting an example about what?
Work ethic of course. Confused

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/07/2022 17:00

No. They're strongly encouraged to wear their pe kit to school all week.

At home I've got curtains, large fans and a bath/shower/hosepipe for cold water drenching as required. Fewer people, less running around in excitement, more ice.

LouLou198 · 15/07/2022 17:01

No I can't as I need to go to work, but don't think I would keep them at home even if I wasn't.

Hurstlandshome · 15/07/2022 17:01

My daughters school is air conditioned, so no reason to keep her off.

LondonQueen · 15/07/2022 17:02

Mine aren't going in, DH will be working from home. Sadly I have to go in as I'm a teacher and we're business as usual. We've already had children fainting and being sick so god knows how they will cope next week!

moiraandthebebe · 15/07/2022 17:03

I won't send mine in. I have the luxury of working from home though so I don't need to worry about someone needing to care for them while I'm in the office.

FourChimneys · 15/07/2022 17:06

I just asked a teenage neighbour. She says if there isn't an email to say school is closed she's going to test positive for Covid on Sunday.

Totally irresponsible for DofE expeditions to go ahead. Youngsters have died in similar circumstances in past years. Telling them they will be letting the team down sounds like emotional abuse to me.

Theneverendingtories · 15/07/2022 17:06

My son has a 90 second walk to school and they have declared a ‘beach day’ so the kids are allowed to wear what they want providing they are wearing hats and ‘decent’. They will be playing with the sand ( which is under a big shadey shelter thing) playing games in the air conditioned hall and dance studios and spending time in the indoor pool and we’ve all chipped in £3 for ice lollies . It sounds like they’re going to have a great day!
I,on the other hand have a beast of a project deadline and my chubby, perimenopausal self will be weeping into my keyboard .

Hollyhead · 15/07/2022 17:08

No, we live close by so no journey considerations, and our house is very hot - they might as well be hot at school which has relaxed the uniform and has put up gazebos for shade etc.

secondary is closing and going to online lessons, good luck with getting teenagers to engage online in a heatwave in the last week of term - I think if they close they should just close.

RishiRich · 15/07/2022 17:10

I'm sending mine in. DD's school is air conditioned and they've sent out details of the sensible adjustments they're making (PE kit, breaks adjusted, cold lunches). DS's school has cancelled the planned outdoor activity schedule and is letting them all wear home clothes. I might drive him in though as it's a hilly walk.
