If you're in a "RED ZONE" are you considering keeping your dc off school?

Hi,

Just that really. Our area is likely going to be in the high 30's, possibly 40 on Monday/Tuesday and I'm not sure what to do.

What are your thoughts?

No, but I will get taxis too and from school (half an hour away) when we’d usually walk

ZimZamZoom · 15/07/2022 14:43

I'm lucky that my non-working days just happen to be Monday and Tuesday. My children are 5 and 7. I'm keeping them off school to spend the day in the shaded garden, in the paddling pool with ice lollies on tap.
Not a peep from the school yet but they're famous for sending important informational texts out 20 minutes before school starts of a morning 😔

I genuinely don't understand all the hype and drama. It probably won't even get that hot.

Just send them in. Safer inside a school building - surely!?

Have you read the advice ? Young children are at an increased risk and considering just yesterday 2 children were sent home with heat exhaustion and temperatures set to rise by almost 10 degrees I think it's only right that parents are concerned.

Our LA sent out Heat advice to be shared with parents yet the school haven't shared this so forgive me for not having the utmost confidence in our school. My own DD is off due to negligence at the hands of the school where she should've been kept safe.

Where is the red zone?

ginnybag · 15/07/2022 14:45

DD's secondary are due sports day Monday.

They're to attend in PE kit and 'they'll make a decision when they see the conditions on the day.'

The problem is, she's a got a 45 minute school bus journey to get there, and her PE kit is about as far removed from suitable as its possible to get. It's a thick, black polyester polo shirt and leggings or cycle shorts - her ordinary pleated skirt and white cotton shirt is cooler.

The MET office warning flat out says any activity that encourages excessive movement should not go ahead. That should pretty much be job done, imo. Madness to even consider having them running in thick, tight, black synthetics under peak sun in a red warning, but there you go. Too, the school is currently all portacabins for classrooms and there's NO shade anywhere on the grounds.

That's ridiculous! I would be keeping my child home from school that day for sure.

Our (primary) school have just said they are closing at 1pm mon/tues so the choice is out of my hands. Will definitely send them in in the mornings though but will probably drive instead of our usual 25 min walk in.

What's the point of closing at 1pm - the hottest part of the day?! Utter madness.

It won't even be hot first thing at 8am so can't see how that affects walking in - will just be a pleasant warm walk surely?

Happytap · 15/07/2022 14:46

Why would you make your kids miss any more school after the last few years? It’s just a bit hot - what do you think is going to happen?

SingingSands · 15/07/2022 14:46

My teen is going to school, where they have "been given permission" to remove their jumpers. I'd like them to go in PE kit, but considering they are not even allowed to remove their ties I think this will be unlikely.

I'll be in the office under the air con, and I'm getting the train instead of cycling.

Where is the red zone?

This is Monday

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2022-07-18

I think it is as much about cities and urban density as position in the country, as parts of Yorkshire, Manchester and Lancashire are in the warning but the south coast doesn't seem to be.

As a child in the summer of 76, I just think there's a general lack of common bloody sense.

Red haired kids outside in the sun.

Burnt people everywhere.

Have a drink.

Not rocket science is it? Hardly summer in New York! (now that is bloody hot and bloody humid) although granted at least there's air con inside.

I would imagine school buildings will be cool though. My house is always cool inside even if it's boiling outside - upstairs is warm granted, but not downstairs.

Put some fans on!

vestedinterests · 15/07/2022 14:49

The only email from my child's school is about no PE next week and that children should come to school in their uniform. Forecast for Mon & Tue here is 37C

theruffles · 15/07/2022 14:49

At the moment my DC's nursery is open but we've been told children can wear cooler clothes and they'll be putting various measures in place to make sure children aren't running round lots at breaktime and drinking lots. My DC has a sports class in the afternoon on one of the days which hasn't been cancelled yet. I was hoping it would so we didn't have to go back out to take part!

Well the best case scenario for mine is they're far too hot for several hours, experience no negative health effects and learn fuck all. They'll suffer detriment from being there and no benefit. The fact that the state decided them getting any schooling was optional for months at a time doesn't mean they subsequently derive any benefit from being sent in to swelter during extreme and dangerous heat.

WhoopItUp · 15/07/2022 14:51

I’m in the red zone and the forecast is 39°. School have sent out a weather warning and advocated hats and sunscreen but no talk of closing. I think the two days will be extremely unpleasant in schools, especially for the youngest children.

ApplesandBunions · 15/07/2022 14:51

I would imagine school buildings will be cool though.

Oh you sweet summer child.

PurpleFrogPolice · 15/07/2022 14:52

My children’s school is holding sports day in the morning on Monday and it’s due to reach 40 where we are. Unbelievable! I will keep my children at home. Their classrooms have no air conditioning or blinds at all.

juliainthedeepwater · 15/07/2022 14:53

@Happytap i suspect you’re being facetious but if you really do not understand the health and infrastructure risks of extreme heat, especially to young children, please educate yourself asap. It’s literally headline news in every publication so shouldn’t be too challenging for you.

🙄

Schools are hot. They often have lessons on many floors, not just ground level. Some classrooms don’t have a fan. Some lovely teachers have bought their own fans as school won’t provide more

UnimpeachableBravery · 15/07/2022 14:55

I'm in the Amber zone and yes I am my house will be much cooler than her classroom.

happytobemrsg · 15/07/2022 14:56

Going to be 37 here. DS6 is still getting over chicken pox so keeping him home until Wednesday at least. DS2 will be staying home (only has an afternoon session anyway). We have air con at home so would rather them stay home.

MarshaBradyo · 15/07/2022 14:56

turquoisebuttons · 15/07/2022 14:40

No, but I’m expecting they’re going to close anyway!

Ours is open

People can choose not to send dc if they wish though

Suzi888 · 15/07/2022 14:59

No.
Our school is getting fans, gazebos, children can wear PE kit. She will be as hot here as she will be there.

popandchoc · 15/07/2022 15:00

School is open but they can go in non uniform and you can pick them up early at 1.30 if needed. Year 6 leavers assembly been moved to wed morning.

Icanseeclearlynow12 · 15/07/2022 15:01

Radio silence from my daughters school so far!!

Squaffle · 15/07/2022 15:01

No, I can't, as I work in a (different) school. Both in London, both staying open. It's going to be "interesting". Our flat is stifling and no garden, so they are possibly better off at school anyway.
