If you're in a "RED ZONE" are you considering keeping your dc off school?

Hi,

Just that really. Our area is likely going to be in the high 30's, possibly 40 on Monday/Tuesday and I'm not sure what to do.

What are your thoughts?

My daughter has to do her d of e hike!!

she has been told if she pulls out she is letting the team down as no one to replace her. It’s ridiculous.

SoftSheen · 15/07/2022 16:00

My children's school is air-conditioned, our house isn't, so they might actually be better off in school.

Figgygal · 15/07/2022 16:05

No theyre going in if its open
The school have put precautions in place and i have to work

Fucking morons.

Of course we are not all going to work. Some people you know....don't.

Some school kids are old enough not to need a babysitter, some kids have a parent working at home or childcare of some sort available.

If the area is predicted temperatures of mid 30s, that’s dreadful. I wouldn’t let my child do that regardless of the pressure of being told they’d be letting the team down. It’s one thing them being in school, quite another to hike miles in direct sunlight carrying very heavy equipment. It’s actually really dangerous, they could all get very poorly.

No way I'd send her and sod the team.

There must be a risk assessment in place for this, including adverse weather conditions. Can you request a copy of this and complain if it's not been conducted fully?

Tromboleese · 15/07/2022 16:13

No, I’m sending mine in. They have been told to wear their PE kits and they will in the shade when outdoors. PTA are providing iced drinks.

ApplesandBunions · 15/07/2022 16:14

Wonder how their insurers would feel about it?

JemimaPuddleducksWaddle · 15/07/2022 16:14

ApplesandBunions · 15/07/2022 14:41

I do wonder, especially in the south east of England.

It is going to be just as hot now according to updates, elsewhere. It isn't just the SE.

Beebatron · 15/07/2022 16:18

I'm keeping my eldest off. She has a 45 minute drive to school on a sweltering bus and I don't think she would be able to cope in that kind of temperature. My two youngest will be going but their primary is about three doors down and I could collect them if they are unwell or not coping. I don't think a lot of people really understand how hot it is going to be and are underestimating the consequences of it in this country with little to no air conditioning in most schools and homes.
Eldest DD has poor attendance due to Covid so they can fine me if they choose, though I doubt they will as it is the last week of term.

ReneBumsWombats · 15/07/2022 16:22

Yes, I'm seriously considering it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/07/2022 16:23

Preeeschooler · 15/07/2022 13:44

Nope, we still have to go to work and I can’t imagine our house will be any cooler!

yep

Normandy144 · 15/07/2022 16:24

I'm sending mine in. I have to work. They'll be hot at home and hot at school so may as well go to school. They won't let them play outside in the direct sun and plenty of water they'll be fine.

IsleofDen · 15/07/2022 16:25

Pandabuggle · 15/07/2022 15:23

@IsleofDen my 6yr old also has ASD and struggles hugely with the warmer weather. He's already been sent home once as he was ill and it causes his behaviour and concentration to decline rapidly.

We're not currently in the red zone but I think that's likely to be extended our way over the next day or so. School are currently saying 'pe kit, water bottle and sun cream'. I'm 6 months pregnant and spend an hour each morning and afternoon on school run. I was really ill after the 28 we had, 35+ is a no go. I don't drive and no one that could take or collect him either.

DS is only just 7. I’ve already told the head that I refuse to let him end the year on a negative note so we will judge day by day, but his 1to1 has been patchy this week and he’s had an exclusion because they couldn’t calm him down, which was exacerbated by the heat and lack of trusted adults.

We have to do what’s best for our kids and let everyone else get on with it.

Gold DoE holder here, if that means anything, and that is insane. Don't let her do it. You wouldn't do it in extreme snow and ice that made it dangerous. The point is to show you can handle unfamiliar terrain and conditions, and that means not making unnecessary journeys when it isn't safe to do it. Team hike rules are not to endanger people. The Dukes of Edinburgh, past and present, would agree

Theoneinthemiddle · 15/07/2022 16:32

It seems to be Monday and Tuesday that are really high- the other days are in the 20’s. We will consider our options closer to the time.

Thesearmsofmine · 15/07/2022 16:32

Mine are home ed anyway but I’ve prepared them that we won’t be going to our usual groups, No way will I be going on several bus journeys in the predicted heat, even this past week when it was really warm the busses heating was on 🥵
I know some people won’t have a choice but to be out and about but I figure the less people using public transport will make it more comfortable for those who have no choice.

Totally agree with this. She is literally playing with her life.

Washermother33 · 15/07/2022 16:33

We are in the red zone and school has just sent an email to say it’s closing with home learning set

Titsywoo · 15/07/2022 16:36

Ours have sent out a letter with 3 levels of heat emergency plans depending how hot it gets. Starts with wearing PE kit, not using the hottest classrooms to having the whole of Tuesday as remote learning and half of Monday (the afternoon).

More worried about DD who has to do an 8 hour shift at Mcdonalds in the heat of the day.

FabFitFifties · 15/07/2022 16:36

No messages from school, but DS's friend reports PE gear - I'd rather he was covered up to be honest - unless they keep them indoors all day. It's o ly forecast for 30 degrees here.

whoruntheworldgirls · 15/07/2022 16:37

No she's going in, wearing a light gingham dress with sandals, school will be keeping them out of the sun and limiting time outside plus providing ice pops

SpindleInTheWind · 15/07/2022 16:39

I agree with the posters saying that a D of E hike on Monday in the red (or edge of the red) zone is insane.

No way would I have let one of my DC do this when they were at school, nor would they be turning up for a sports day or outdoor activity.

A hike is quite obviously dangerous, would not get through any form of risk assessment, and breaches safeguarding.

FrippEnos · 15/07/2022 16:41

CoastalWave
I would imagine school buildings will be cool though.

hahahahahaha
Thank you I needed the laugh :)

We are in and open all day (secondary school)
