I manage to make a sound that's half way between an n and an m. (I've just said it out loud several times -there's only me in the house.) So it's sam/n widge.

Maybe it's a sort of doubly articulated consonant. So an M, but with your tongue where it would be when you say an N. I've just spent a minute making an odd humming noise and switching my tongue in and out of the N position, and I think I can hear a very subtle difference… and DP thinks I've gone a bit funny on my new meds.

Ok I love “hamwidge” and her later “jamwidge”. I shall henceforth use this phrasing. Thank you @rosepettel if you’re still around! (And if you are, I think you should tell 13yo DD the forced hamwidge story.)

None. I say sandwich. Everyone else I know does.

So the top one then!

Most people I know (East Anglia) say sam widge, I say sand witch.

English speakers need to understand that some letters are silent.

There aren't any silent letters in 'sandwich'. Yes, of course people learning to speak and read English need to know that some letters are silent, but if I were listening to a child read and we were sounding out the letters I would expect to hear all of 'sand', not 'sam', and I would be wanting to hear a 'ch' sound at the end, not a 'dge' sound.

I need to pull my socks up and read what I'm saying - never really thought about it before this post. It doesn't even have an M in it!
