Yes. But many times they’re not silent, they’re just subtle.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 15/07/2022 09:21

San-wich

Favouritefruits · 15/07/2022 09:22

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/07/2022 09:24

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/07/2022 09:25

Sand-which - but I not much emphasis on the d

Have never heard anyone say it with an m !

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/07/2022 09:25

No, it was Rosepetel l think!

Helldiddleydingdongcrap · 15/07/2022 09:26

Samwidge, or sarnie.

IANAL · 15/07/2022 09:26

I grew up saying samwidge but now I sort of elide the middle letters so it comes out something like saaadge.

Mind you, because I'm a bit of a twat, I usually say 'witch of sand' at home.

traintraveller · 15/07/2022 09:33

Usually piece. Or sandwitch if I think the person I'm talking to won't know what a piece is.

Cinderella88 · 15/07/2022 09:33

MbatataOwl · 15/07/2022 01:38

Piece :D

Yep a piece 😂

Hoppinggreen · 15/07/2022 09:34

Tonysopranosghost · 15/07/2022 09:35

Yes. But many times they’re not silent, they’re just subtle.

I’m with the Oxford English Dictionary on this one. The ‘d’ is silent.
I think people saying they’ve never heard an ‘m’ aren’t paying much attention.

Oh for an edit button. I put text on that link but it disappeared. Anyway, that's how we pronounce it in our house... SANDwhiches!

MintyGreenDreams · 15/07/2022 09:42

San widge

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 09:42

I’m not a native English speaker so I do sometimes go overboard on ‘correctness’ and then get it wrong! Tbf when I say the ‘d’ it’s almost imperceptible so it might just be that I’m explaining the sound incorrectly. ‘San’ on it’s own would sound slightly different imo. I love the intricacies of sounds in pronunciation, so interesting!

WhatABloodyFaff · 15/07/2022 09:43

San-widge.

I think the D sound gets lost in normal speech unless you really are trying to say it properly, as pp said, using the 'telephone voice'.

Penguinevere · 15/07/2022 09:43

Samwich

bluekostree · 15/07/2022 09:50

I say sand-wich.

Dic · 15/07/2022 09:55

Sam widge

SlowingDownAndDown · 15/07/2022 10:05

I think I might pronounce the town slightly more like the way it’s written.

GoldPig · 15/07/2022 10:07

Samwidge

Basically Sah-wich. South London.

My dad says Sang-wich which makes me near murderous with rage.

I was going to come on and say my son says sangwidge but it sounds like he's not the first. He's only 2 though so I think he might grow out of it!
