Borgonzola · 15/07/2022 10:12

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow yes thank you!!! I already raised this, I immediately thought of the hamwidge GrinGrinGrin

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/07/2022 10:14

San-wich? San-widge?
Samwich? Sam-widge?

None. I say sandwich. Everyone else I know does.

Ihaveaquestionn · 15/07/2022 10:14

probably closest to samwidge

SatinHeart · 15/07/2022 10:19

San-widge

Glad I'm the only one in the office today, so no one can hear me muttering "sandwich, sandwich" to myself while I try to work out how I say it 😂

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 10:20

Can’t stand it with the ‘m’ in there. Sorry but it’s so...wrong.

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 10:20

@SatinHeart 😆

I’m not a native English speaker so I do sometimes go overboard on ‘correctness’ and then get it wrong! Tbf when I say the ‘d’ it’s almost imperceptible so it might just be that I’m explaining the sound incorrectly. ‘San’ on it’s own would sound slightly different imo. I love the intricacies of sounds in pronunciation, so interesting!

Yes, very interesting. When I taught English as a foreign language I found there were more silent letters than I’d realised. I would have put the ‘t’ in often in the subtle but present category, for example.

Its a very Scottish thing - the "restaurant manager" on the London Virgin trains used to say it and it was like nails down a blackboard

medianewbie · 15/07/2022 10:24

Sand-witch

Goldpaw · 15/07/2022 10:24

Sandwitch

PearlclutchersInc · 15/07/2022 10:24

Say "sang-wich" (sorry thought this linked to a message)

medianewbie · 15/07/2022 10:26

Schmz · 15/07/2022 08:35

People in sandwich Kent

🤣

Yes!
Also, 'gaan up Chaaaam' (Chatham with no T at all !)

mouse70 · 15/07/2022 10:27

Sand witch

watcherintherye · 15/07/2022 10:28

When middle dc was about 2, he used to call a sandwich a ‘sampy’! So sweet when he said ‘can I have a ham sampy?’ Still makes me smile!Smile

watcherintherye · 15/07/2022 10:30

Also sand-witch. Sarnie makes me cringe for some reason.

emmathedilemma · 15/07/2022 10:39

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/07/2022 01:31

Basically Sah-wich. South London.

My dad says Sang-wich which makes me near murderous with rage.

OMG my friend puts a g in the middle too.....one day I AM going to murder with a sandwich!!

Justcashnosweets · 15/07/2022 10:48

San-witch

Anonimousse · 15/07/2022 10:51

I pronounce it sand-widge in general , but if talking exclusively to my husband call it a sammidge.

fancyfrogs · 15/07/2022 10:56

samwidge

LuluBlakey1 · 15/07/2022 10:57

Sand which - no M, no D

MardyBra · 15/07/2022 11:06

A linguistic explanation. Those of you thinking you pronounce the ‘nd’, probably say ‘m’ in fast speech. www.michiganradio.org/arts-culture/2015-04-26/what-would-the-earl-of-samwich-say

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 11:08

Well I for one know with absolute certainty that I do not.

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 11:12

And that’s an American article.
