Sand-wich? Sandwidge?
San-wich? San-widge?
Samwich? Sam-widge?

Sand-wich

And that’s an American article.

Basic articulatory phonetics innit. Assimilation (sounds changing to become more like nearby sounds) happens in British English as well as American English.

Ritascornershop · 15/07/2022 11:16

Sand-witch. I definitely don’t use an m (I’m Canadian but my local accent isn’t the same as much of the rest of the country).

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/07/2022 11:28

Sam widge
ummm I fancy one now

maddy68 · 15/07/2022 11:30

My aunty pronounced it sang widge and it used to drive me insane

glasshouse · 15/07/2022 11:32

My son has just made me aware that I say sang wich, this has come as a complete surprise to me as I always thought I was pronouncing it correctly. Think it comes from my Irish connections.

And that’s an American article.

It’s the same phenomenon in British English. Basic linguistic rules.

CaptainSensiblesRedBeret · 15/07/2022 11:41

Sanger.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone pronounce the d.

I'm a sand - witch kind of person now. I think I maybe got into the habit of articulating words a little more when teaching small people to spell. I think I grew up eating san-witches, or sarnies

MardyBra · 15/07/2022 11:43

It’s the same phenomenon with hambag.

MardyBra · 15/07/2022 11:44

Unless you’re Lady Bracknell.

MrsMeatball · 15/07/2022 11:59

When I'm talking to my Dad Sand which
the d always pronounced and there is a wh not a w.
Otherwise I fall into sand wich or sometime samwidge thanks to living with DH for so long.

SamWidges · 15/07/2022 12:03

SamWidge. And I should know!

Yes I suppose it would be!

I also always say ‘handbag’ but handbags are my big love and it would just be so, so wrong to call them ‘hambags’. 😃 I expect my slightly too accurate pronunciation is one of the things that straightaway signals the fact to native speakers that I learned English as an older child.

(That last sentence is so clumsy!)

SlowingDownAndDown · 15/07/2022 12:24

Why do you ask @Flamingoose?

ihavenocats · 15/07/2022 13:22

All those are weird ways to say it.

It's SAM WIJ

Gymnopedie · 15/07/2022 13:43

I manage to make a sound that's half way between an n and an m. (I've just said it out loud several times -there's only me in the house.) So it's sam/n widge.

IncompleteSenten · 15/07/2022 13:45

After saying sandwich out loud about 20 times I realise I say san'dwitch

InTheShadeOfTheFigTree · 15/07/2022 13:52

Why are people putting an 'm' in it when there isn't one? I don't understand (or should that be I don't understam?)

LadyLolaRuben · 15/07/2022 13:56

Sammich Grin

WaitinginVain · 15/07/2022 14:02

Now I think about it, Sam-widge.

Krustykrabpizza · 15/07/2022 14:06

Samwidge

May I refer you to the answer given by @MardyBra at 1106 today.

DyingForACuppa · 15/07/2022 14:20

Sand-widge. Or occasionally 'sammich' when I'm deliberately mispronouncing it to be humorous.

DyingForACuppa · 15/07/2022 14:22

Oh, or 'sarnie' of course!
