Here is the old thread... let's keep on top of what's going on!

Liz Truss isn't that old, but next to the other women she appeared dated and a bit odd looking. She needs to lighten up a bit

She is channelling her hero Margaret Thatcher

Education wasn't mentioned or housing.
Tom praising the lady doctor was waiting for applause that didn't come at one point too
It was all a bit awkward and painful at times

He seemed quite choked up when he mentioned how his friends were alive because of the NHS.

I think as far as getting life he's got the most experience.

Watching on +1.

Did PM just say even if she had a vasectomy she'll still be a woman 🤣🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

She's incredibly bright this one.

Notonthestairs · 15/07/2022 21:57

I haven't watched the debate yet.

If, as suggested, Badenoch is attracting donors from (what I consider to be) the far right then I think we should be concerned.

I hadn't expected the Conservatives to necessarily embrace One Nationers again but cash from Brexit Party founders would only pull the party further right. They would be buying the party. That would mean more tedious focus on National Trust, the BBC/Ch4 statues and more policies like Rwanda, running down of education and the NHS.

That large umbrella they are so fond of describing themselves as would fold entirely.

tobee · 15/07/2022 21:57

Quite a lot of people posting on another social media forum site, that probably has a younger demographic than Mumsnet, seem to be forgiving of PM of many things because they've picked up that she's supposedly more trans/culture wars friendly. Ignoring all the rest.

If only that meant the Tory party were more likely to split. Unfortunately unlikely as Tories put winning elections way, way ahead of policy.

"Tonight we asked over 1000 normal voters to watch the debate and we have just asked them who they thought performed best. "

itsgettingweird · 15/07/2022 22:08

Will be interested to see if the voters go with what the nation are indicating they want or their idealistic right wing donor model that benefits them.

I think if they want to remain in power they need to start listening to the people they work for and represent.

Notonthestairs · 15/07/2022 22:27

Yes I wondered what the criteria was for "normal" voters (and where they found them!).

A centrist party would get my attention.

DuncinToffee · 15/07/2022 23:08

Non paid up members of the Tory party?

Truss scored less than the I don't know/none of the above

Disclaimer I didn't watch the debate or was asked to vote Smile

L1ttledrummergirl · 16/07/2022 00:00

Is anyone else thinking of writing to their MP to tell them your opinion?
I'm thinking I might love being ignored just in case she decides at the last minute to rethink her choice.

tobee · 16/07/2022 00:35

Mines voting Tugendhat apparently.

TV debates:
None of the five would say out loud that the prime minister was an honest man. Even Liz Truss, seen as closest to Mr Johnson and endorsed by his key allies, wouldn't say it.
Just over a week ago, four of the five would have been expected to come out to bat for Mr Johnson as members of the government. Politics moves on quickly

This is what I find so grim- they’ve all always known about Boris! Everyone has always known.
I find the blatant careerism and revisionism quite head spinning. I just want a general election so we can get rid of the lot of them. They’re all tainted by Boris Johnson.

cakeorwine · 16/07/2022 09:18

They don't seem to have much personality. It will be interesting to see how they come across at the Dispatch Box and in TV debates when we have an election.

How very Trumpian

tobee · 16/07/2022 10:03

Honestly, reading that article, what's the point of things like The House of Lords Commission if things like that can be overridden? Are there no checks and balances in the name of democracy? I don't see how that fits when the House of Lords isn't democratic in the first place.

DuncinToffee · 16/07/2022 11:01

Unelected peers, wasn't that why we had to leave the EU?

DuncinToffee · 16/07/2022 11:02

Last night, the Conservative leadership candidates shared their views on taxes, the cost of living, the NHS, gender identity and more.

We’ve taken a closer look at some of the things they said

From the Independent

Boris Johnson's spokesperson was on Friday unable to say whether the prime minister would take part an emergency Cobra meeting about the extreme heatwave about to hit the UK.

The prime minister is working from his country mansion of Chequers, where he is reportedly set to host a "thank you" party for supporters over the weekend.

Notonthestairs · 16/07/2022 11:13

Today's COBRA was chaired by Kit Malthouse according to Sky News.

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2022 11:17

Boris Johnson was always allergic to COBRA meetings before the pandemic hit us hard , so it's not a surprise really.
I guess they are taking full advantage of Chequers and it's wine cellar and hospitality before they have to give it up for good! I can imagine it's a much nicer environment than Downing Street too.
I wonder who he will back in the final vote?

DuncinToffee · 16/07/2022 11:18

Party before job, nothing new there.

newnamethanks · 16/07/2022 11:23

Wahey! I've still got the keys to the Tuck Shop chaps and it's still free to all invitees🍾🍾🍾 Don't nick all the spoons. Poor cleaners at Chequers. Pools and pools of expensive vintage vom will await them.

Blossomtoes · 16/07/2022 11:26

I wonder who he will back in the final vote?

Truss.
