If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!

I am a soft southerner. Born just outside of London and other than when working abroad for long stretches, I have always remained in SE. So used to mild winters and generally always good summers, sometimes long stretches of beautiful hot sun and long days. Good job too that I love the sun!

my brother is going up to Inverness next weekend on a stag weekend. Forecast is 17/18 degrees and cloudy. Whereas forecast for where I live for next weekend is sun all day and 29/32!!

my sister will be in Newcastle up on Tyne - 20/21 and patchy sun

I know this will suit many but those who love the sun and warmth… how do you fare if live up north?!

I get 24hrs daylight in the summer (haven’t closed my curtains in months) and I love it. The contrast though is 5/6 hours daylight in the winter. Makes you very aware of the seasons.

Sorry I've not rtft but honestly - I am so glad I'm in the north during weather like this. Imagine being in muggy London breathing in the traffic fumes on a day like today - no thanks! As it is I'm barely coping in the heat - I've just kind of flopped around doing not very much today!

Palmpeople · 12/07/2022 21:34

24 hours daylight is pretty cool, not sure if it’s for me though although I imagine you get used to it! Getting dark at 930/10 is perfect for me, and worth it for the lighter winter days. I struggle with the short days as it is, so I probably wouldn’t cope well with it being darker any longer.

Not everyone in the south lives in London. It’s perfect down on the coast! I wouldn’t want to be in London either

Fabboush · 14/07/2022 07:40

Bloody lovely 17°c in the North West today. Feeling summery and cool 😀

Orangemoons · 14/07/2022 08:09

17 degrees would be considered cold for me in summer! Much prefer the 25 degrees we’re getting today on the south coast, 8am and already perfectly blue skies ☀️

Delatron · 14/07/2022 08:19

I’d feel very short changed with 17 degrees in summer. March/April that would be ok!

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 14/07/2022 08:20

You do acclimatise - just like when I lived warm places and had no trouble sleeping at 23 degrees, whereas that's roasting for me now I live in the cold and wet.

TBH, I'm here for the kids. I make no secret of the fact that as soon as they move out in 10 years or so, I'm back to the warm! And I mean southern Europe, not just the South of England (where I grew up, and admittedly, my parent's house does seem to be in a particularly warm bubble)

liveforsummer · 14/07/2022 08:21

Thankfully (for us heat lovers) it's just one day of 18c for Scotland then warming up again to mid 20's and expected to hit 30+ by Monday

CornPlaster · 14/07/2022 16:46

Heat is shit. Am on holiday at the moment. It’s scorchio. We have to come home and have a sleep. V early in morning and last thing at night is lovely, every other time is logistical nightmare with clothes, sun cream, shade. Am looking forward to being home again and just being able to get up and do whatever I want to do when I want to do it.

Teach12 · 16/07/2022 21:47

Inverness is 25 / 28 degrees this week?

Teach12 · 16/07/2022 21:49

And people 'cope' fairly easily with lots of beautiful beaches nearby including stunning Loch Morlich. Poor souls living in Inverness .

KatharineofAragon · 16/07/2022 22:10

I moved back to Scotland after years down South. I find the weather absolutely miserable here. It’s never actually hot and the wind is incessant. So even if it is ‘warm’ the wind means you have to wear a coat. I hate it.

Fabboush · 20/07/2022 09:26

Thank fuck for that. It's a gorgeous breezy sunny 18°c in NW England today. You am keep that shit.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/07/2022 21:15

Bet everyone in Scotland were glad they weren't in the SE yesterday.

I wonder if the northerners on this thread saying how daft it is (some seemingly almost enraged by the very suggestion!) to suggest that the South has warmer summers and milder winters… are still quite so adamant about this as the weeks progress into winter.

I am always seeing comments pop up from northerners on mumsnet that it’s unfair we all get the same energy discount given the south is so much milder!

Doingprettywellthanks · 17/09/2022 06:13

SE town here on outskirts of London and it was beautiful yesterday. My son wore shorts, I had the patio doors open most of the day.
Meanwhile another poster in NE saying they were layering up as so chilly and down to 4 degrees last night!

RampantIvy · 17/09/2022 07:17

We had 15 degrees here on the edge of the Pennines yesterday. Jumper weather.

It's been very mild during the day in my part of the Northwest thank-you, I'm still wandering around in short sleeves but thanks for the smugness.

Stealth boast? I need to go to the shop as I have no bread eggs etc and I'm hungry too but I'm in cold and miserable Bolton...

x2boys · 13/06/2019 16:15
I don't mind the rain so much,it's the coldness ,it's supposed to.be June it feels like november😠

what can I say…. On my lunch break and sitting in garden on my phone with time on my hands! 😂

Good detective work op! 😂

Mabelstearooms · 17/09/2022 07:48

@Doingprettywellthanks are you a bit bored? Why are you dragging up posts about the weather, from 2 months ago, to try and prove a non existent point? It's mid September now. Of course it's colder that it was in July!

TightDiamondShoes · 17/09/2022 07:56

You can keep your “hot evenings” and I’ll keep my same day doctor appointments, NHS dentist and sparse population ta. 😉

Exactly that! A bit bored. Sitting in car waiting for teen to come out to get to rugby practise!

Just checked London hass highs of 18 degrees today ,in my part of the Northwest we have highs of 16 degrees so not a huge difference.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 17/09/2022 08:05

I grew up in Blackpool and moved down to London at 17. Obviously it’s not warmer in Blackpool than London but what did take adjustment was that the winters in Blackpool would regularly have beautiful big blue skies with freezing temps, so it would be incredibly sunny but also frosty. Absolutely beautiful. In London, my first winter felt like I was living under a low ceiling of constant rain.

So not warmer but the lack of winter sunshine in the south got to me.
