If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!

I am a soft southerner. Born just outside of London and other than when working abroad for long stretches, I have always remained in SE. So used to mild winters and generally always good summers, sometimes long stretches of beautiful hot sun and long days. Good job too that I love the sun!

my brother is going up to Inverness next weekend on a stag weekend. Forecast is 17/18 degrees and cloudy. Whereas forecast for where I live for next weekend is sun all day and 29/32!!

my sister will be in Newcastle up on Tyne - 20/21 and patchy sun

I know this will suit many but those who love the sun and warmth… how do you fare if live up north?!

I'm just outside Edinburgh and it's currently 25 degrees. It's been warm and sunny for last 2 weeks, but very windy. I don't like it being much over 22 degrees when you have to go about normal life, on holiday it's fine.

Don't know where you live @RJnomore1 but it doesn't rain much at all where I am, east coast of Scotland is pretty dry

Superduperwooper · 10/07/2022 16:39

I grew up in Scotland and moved to NW England when I was 8YO. I had never seen snow until I moved to England. And that was over 30 years ago! It's not permanently winter North of Watford you know!

Grew up in Yorkshire, spent some years away in the south and midlands and have just moved to the north west. Missing having a decent summer so much I have decided to move back down as soon as possible. Never noticed it growing up but now I've tasted warmer weather it seems I can't go back. It's a shame because almost everything else is better up north 😉

Do it!

i went up north with work 2018

i will never ever forget the biting wind and greyness.

it was May.

i came home and it was sunny and 23 degrees.

Have you ever spent any serious time in other parts of the uk OP?

x2boys · 10/07/2022 16:44

I'm in the Northwest it's roasting here today and has been warm all week,it's not all grim up north .

userxx · 10/07/2022 16:44

Boiling here in south Manchester. It's not always grim up north.

99ProblemsButAnIncelAintOne · 10/07/2022 16:46

I'm in West Yorkshire and the weather is bloody beautiful. It's hit 30 today, not a cloud in sight and we've spent the day by the river. Heaven.

Nope!

Southerner 100%

Very disappointing holiday to wales (rain rain rain). August.

work - Glasgow and Edinburgh (the latter exquisitely beautiful), but SO SO cold. The wind, the biting wind.

and then the odd city up north for work / visiting friend. I went up to visit in summer. I had imagined bbqs and pub gardens, as weather at home was glorious.

we had to be inside most of the time as drizzled (and a bit chilly) the entire bloody time! So now she always comes to me!

I actually preferred it when I lived on the east coast for a couple of years, up near aberdeen. It was cold but much drier. I’m in Ayrshire and it’s miserable we still to get the worst of everything. I’m enjoying today though

99ProblemsButAnIncelAintOne · 10/07/2022 16:49

I went to London once in June and it rained the whole time.

That doesn't mean it's always rainy there though does it so I'm not sure why you use that logic for up north 😂

Indeed I once went to Brighton in January and it was freezing ,that doesn't mean I imagine its always freezing
I'm sorry to disappointed you Op but we also have glorious weather in Northwest too.

Clearly you believe anywhere outside of London is a frozen wasteland. 🙄

TravellingJack · 10/07/2022 16:56

I grew up in SE England and the cooler weather was a factor in choosing to go to a Scottish university. I never moved back! I'm down visiting family now and not coping with the heat/humidity at all... we're all caked in factor 50 too and still getting slightly sunburned, no golden tan here! When out, we speed walk (as much as possible in this heat) between patches of shade and loiter anywhere that has air-con.

LadyCatStark · 10/07/2022 17:02

I don’t. I have SAD and I have to take actual fucking anti depressants just to get through at least 9 months of the year 😭.

Snoopymcsnoopface · 10/07/2022 17:03

Haha these threads are always hysterical. I love it when people think the North is some dark desolate, isolated place. In Yorkshire today its 30 degrees and will be for some days to come. We've had better whether up north in my parts this year than my parents have had on outskirts of London and my pils have had in the West country.

Cantdoitallperfectly · 10/07/2022 17:11

I live in East Lothian and we have a lot less rain than the rest of Scotland but we do have wind. I love the mornings where we have blue skies and beaches with lots of people enjoying the sun on their morning walks. Increases our quality of life. No doubting it’s cold in winter and not as warm as the south in summer but I wouldn’t live in London where it’s muggy and claustrophobic.

SheSaysShush · 10/07/2022 17:12

I wish I lived further north. I'm in Manchester and it's boiling. I hate it.

est1899 · 10/07/2022 17:13

In the north the sun doesn't exist, we have icicles hanging in our houses all year round, we don't have electricity only candlelight, no running water either. We only have daylight 3 days of the year, in June. Colour was only invented recently, before that everything was black and white.

Meanwhile in the real world summer actually exists outside of London OP. There is a vast and interesting country you could try exploring a bit better.

MsOllie · 10/07/2022 17:23

Definitely not grey today! I mean it's not THAT cold

If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!
30not13 · 10/07/2022 17:23

I'm in NE Scotland and it's 26c. Thank you I think I cope just fine 🙄

x2boys · 10/07/2022 17:30

The Op is nearly as funny as the poster who thought that everyone in the North constantly ate fried food and suet puddings and had no access to fresh fruit and vegetables because the one time they had visited family up north the family ate fried food and suet puddings so of course everybody up north did
And she was so lucky to live near a market that sold fresh fruit and and fresh fish etc, because obviously markets don't exist in the north .

StrangeCondition · 10/07/2022 17:36

NW here too, currently 27°, forecast to be warmer tomorrow. The last two summers we've had days where it's touched 30°...so not too grim

Lyricallie · 10/07/2022 17:36

I'm in the Highlands (even more north of Inverness) and it's gorgeous today 18c and sunny. Were sitting out in the garden reading and playing with the puppy. We had a walk along the beach looking at blue water. It's not too bad for rain here, it's the wind that's the killer. I do love the sun, I've lived in London and USA (southern states) and you do forget and what you have becomes the norm. The same way I always forget to take a jacket to Glasgow even though I grew up there and know it is always raining but where I live it's dry. You just don't take the sunny days for granted.
