If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!

I am a soft southerner. Born just outside of London and other than when working abroad for long stretches, I have always remained in SE. So used to mild winters and generally always good summers, sometimes long stretches of beautiful hot sun and long days. Good job too that I love the sun!

my brother is going up to Inverness next weekend on a stag weekend. Forecast is 17/18 degrees and cloudy. Whereas forecast for where I live for next weekend is sun all day and 29/32!!

my sister will be in Newcastle up on Tyne - 20/21 and patchy sun

I know this will suit many but those who love the sun and warmth… how do you fare if live up north?!

I’m a Londoner. Moved to Scotland 10 years ago. I’m a sun worshipper and currently sunbathing as it’s clear skies. Temps are lower than down south which means when it’s sunny I can spend all day in the sun without melting.

same for our door activities in the summer. Can go for long walks, bike rides, hikes without combusting.

im east coast so more sun and less rain. I love Scotland and wild horses couldn’t drag me back down south.

Bertieboo82 · 10/07/2022 16:11

Yes currently

but I was talking about next weekend when scorching here and not hitting 20 in Inverness and no sun at all!

but sounds lovely this weekend - so enjoy!

I don’t think you can describe yourself as “I am a Londoner” anymore if you moved to Scotland ten years ago!

I don’t,it makes me miserable that we can never plan anything in advance because the weather is always shit!

Hello! I'm in Sunderland, about 1 mile from the coast and I have to say I'm absolutely in love with the weather here. Prior to July 2021, spent 21 years in London, and prior to that 19 years in the North West of England. Was not expecting this part of the North East to be SO SUNNY! The sky here is just gorgeous, and before moving had prepared myself for a pretty miserable sky, most of the time. "Get used to it Viv, it'll be cheaper than London but with a blumin' miserable sky!" - was the thought rattling around in the head. Couldn't have been more wrong. Not sure how much the sky/ weather differs from here to Newcastle, only popped to Newcastle a couple of times since being here. Temperature I love too - Winter wasn't outrageously cold. But goodness me, the big, big blue skies!! I recall over Winter seeing the most gorgeous pink skies at sunset time; in fact, we had the most beautiful pink skies again on Friday evening. The sky is one of my favourite Sunderland things :)

If high temperatures are a must, then it will fall short for anyone with that requirement.

ThorsBedazzler · 10/07/2022 16:18

I don't cope with the heat.
I love having proper seasons, and the long dark winter nights.
Summer may not be blisteringly hot but it is light until nearly 11pm at midsummer where I am and light at 4am.

I missed those summer evenings and nights when I lived in London.

MintyGreenDreams · 10/07/2022 16:21

I'm in the North in Yorkshire and it's 30 degrees here

ThorsBedazzler · 10/07/2022 16:22

Also: any temp above 11°c will have folk out sunbathing and men walking their naked beer bellies about.

19°c in Inverness will be lovely.

LouScot · 10/07/2022 16:22

20 degrees in Scotland is great!!!😁we often have beautiful May/June time and honestly there's no place I'd rather be when it's like this. Yes, we have more than our share of dull, grey, miserable days when you go to work in the dark and it's starting to get dark not long after lunch (well, it feels like that!) but for me at least it makes the light nights so amazing, same when we've got days like today.

RJnomore1 · 10/07/2022 16:25

I’m in Scotland, I hate it and moan constantly. I only stay because it would require a ri key to get my husband to shift, it’s bloody freezing 360 days a year and rains so much.

Today is sunny! And it’s (just) over 20 degrees! I have broken out the sandals and im happy.

CazY777 · 10/07/2022 16:25

I am a Londoner (having been born and brought up in London) and now live in the north east. Beautiful day here today, sitting outside having a bbq, daughter has been in the pool since 11am. It's not always grim up north you know!

balalake · 10/07/2022 16:26

I lived in the north east for seven years. It was not the lower temperatures I found difficult, it was earlier darkness in winter.

EllaPaella · 10/07/2022 16:27

I'm on NE coast (Northumberland) and it's 22° here today, gorgeous sunshine and by the coast a nice breeze. Would 100% rather have this than the horrid airless, muggy and humid heat my sister is having in London.
I was born and brought up down south and summers were definitely warmer but we still have decent weather up here. And we don't get anywhere near as much rain as they seem to get in the west.

NotMyDayJob · 10/07/2022 16:29

I'm a Londoner and in the north east (also once a Londoner always a Londoner) and it's boiling here today!

Ohohm · 10/07/2022 16:30

I'm further north than Inverness, I will happily sit out in shorts and we get the Bbq out whenever it reaches about 13.
On the rare 18 days we moan about how hot it is😂, you just get used to the temperature that you have

Its the wind that is awful but nowhere near as bad in summer and in winter sad lights are a must for me.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 10/07/2022 16:31

I think ‘Scottish weather’ is a) overstated and b) too vague. Scotland is an entire country and as such it has varying weather! It can be raining in Edinburgh and blazing sunshine just down the road in East Lothian, for example.

It’s actually gorgeous here in Edinburgh today, I’m outside on the lawn right now. 24°C but feels even warmer.

What I don’t miss about the south east — I lived in London for 15 years — is the punishing humidity. It can get a little muggy here occasionally but it never feels like you’re being flattened from above like London can feel in July and August.

liveforsummer · 10/07/2022 16:32

If you live here then you acclimatise and 21c is warm 😆

woody87 · 10/07/2022 16:33

The weather in Scotland is appalling. Particularly in the west of Scotland where I am. I used to live in Australia and I seriously am doubting my decision to move back here.

Babdoc · 10/07/2022 16:33

I’m in Perthshire, hiding in the shade trying to keep cool - it’s currently 27C and the sun is burning in a blazing cobalt sky!
It’s been like this for days, I’m v sunburned, and my lawn is suffering from the drought we had for most of the spring.
Scotland certainly isn’t the frozen Arctic waste you fondly imagine!

Cakemonger · 10/07/2022 16:33

Grew up in Yorkshire, spent some years away in the south and midlands and have just moved to the north west. Missing having a decent summer so much I have decided to move back down as soon as possible. Never noticed it growing up but now I've tasted warmer weather it seems I can't go back. It's a shame because almost everything else is better up north 😉

Where are you? It's still 27c in Edinburgh right now

Cakemonger · 10/07/2022 16:34

It's a glorious day today and hot tomorrow but these days are too fecking far between!

ErrolTheDragon · 10/07/2022 16:36

I'm in Lancashire. Since dropping to half time working with flexible hours (years ago), I've found it fine, as there's really not that many long runs of no sunshine /continuous rain.

It's glorious here today anyway - cloudess sunshine, a bit too hot.

We try to do a decent walk every day, there's been more days when we've reckoned it was too hot to do so than too wet or cold.

cannaethink · 10/07/2022 16:37

I’m in Scotland, reasonably south and east. As pp said, sunny but not too hot is perfect as you can go out and do stuff without melting!
When we do get hot sunny days, everyone is out to make the most of it and I think it makes for a good atmosphere.
The light short nights are good too.
Being able to wfh or having an outdoor job helps. In the past I’ve missed any hot days due to being stuck inside at work. Although the outdoor job in the winter was pretty miserable!
