If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!

I am a soft southerner. Born just outside of London and other than when working abroad for long stretches, I have always remained in SE. So used to mild winters and generally always good summers, sometimes long stretches of beautiful hot sun and long days. Good job too that I love the sun!

my brother is going up to Inverness next weekend on a stag weekend. Forecast is 17/18 degrees and cloudy. Whereas forecast for where I live for next weekend is sun all day and 29/32!!

my sister will be in Newcastle up on Tyne - 20/21 and patchy sun

I know this will suit many but those who love the sun and warmth… how do you fare if live up north?!

And you are always going to get differences of opnions anyway believe what you want Op.

Lovetogarden2022 · 11/07/2022 12:22

I'm in the north west - we have a (fairly sheltered) south facing garden and it's a total sun trap. I grow tropical plants in the conservatory at the back too.

ProseccoStorm · 11/07/2022 12:25

Having lives in north west Scotland I can confirm that i personally much prefer the weather down south.

It's not just temperature but also the awful long dark winters with such limited daylight. Sunshine and sunlight make me happy, I couldn't go back.

Also we are weeks ahead garden wise than my relatives in Scotland, they're always amazed that we have peas/lettuce/cherries when we do.

Stealth boast? I need to go to the shop as I have no bread eggs etc and I'm hungry too but I'm in cold and miserable Bolton...

x2boys · 13/06/2019 16:15
I don't mind the rain so much,it's the coldness ,it's supposed to.be June it feels like november😠

what can I say…. On my lunch break and sitting in garden on my phone with time on my hands! 😂

It's unfortunate when you go somewhere else and the weather is worse at any given time. Last December we travelled to London leaving a sunny if slightly chilly Edinburgh. Got a shock when we arrived to bone chilling cold and grey. Dc moaned the whole time about how cold London is. The year before though we'd walked round Hyde park winter wonderland without a coat. You just can never tell.

I'm sure you understand that Inverness is really very far north though. Next weekend in Edinburgh is forecast 22-24c which is fairly typical for early July.

Fair enough but by the same token Op there was a thread about how cold and miserable London was as it was summer ,and yet it was cracking the flags here so it works booth ways.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 11/07/2022 12:35

Is this the start of 'someone mentioned a referendum' so now MN will have constant Scotland-bashing threads?

It was tedious af the first time round but with all the new hate incidents legislation, certain posters and MNHQ might want to look a bit harder at the barely disguised xenophobia and racism on here.

Bertieboo82 · 11/07/2022 12:39

So you are genuinely saying that I am wrong in the very simple assertion that the south generally has warmer and sunnier summers and milder winters.

you honestly believe that that assertion is plain wrong

I'm originally from South London, and now live on the edge of the Pennines. We usually get a lot more rain and cooler weather than my family in South London do. Yes, we do get hot weather where we live, and it is hot now, but it isn't as hot as London is.

Unusually, most of the UK is currently basking in a heatwave, so I don't understand the defensive answers that @Bertieboo82 is getting. It is clear to me that she is talking in general terms, not specifically about now.

I didn't say you were wrong ,but it's the fact you can't seem to accept that the North also has nice weather and often for weeks at a time ,and the rather dramatic biting winds and grey sky ,yes of course we get it but not all summer long and you seem to think Northerners can never have Bar b cues sometimes London and the southeast will be basking in sunshine whilst it's grey and miserable in the North, and sometimes it's opposite way around although the weather forecast, often ignore the North.

Tbh If the worst they can throw at us is “haha you don’t lie tossing and turning for hours on end in a pool of sweat” let the fuckers crack on. 🤷‍♀️

Last year we were touring round the Scottish highlands basking in 24/25 degrees while the rest of the country was chucking it down. It was like being in the Med, hardly any traffic and no people. Empty secluded beaches with fine white sands and turquoise seas. Heaven. I’m glad the Southerners don’t want to come up North. Last time I was in Cornwall it was bloody heaving and it rained!

RampantIvy · 11/07/2022 13:57

Scotland is often lovely in early summer. I remember last May was cold and grey where we live, and Glasgow was basking in temperatures in the 20s.

But the OP was talking in general terms, and I "get" it.

Trixiefirecracker · 11/07/2022 14:02

I get it too but it’s not like we don’t get nice weather and we are generally only 2-3 degrees difference. Plus London actually gets more rainfall than Edinburgh. Her ‘how do you cope’ sounds like we have artic temperatures compared to down South and that’s just not true. It’s not wildly different.

BadAtMaths2 · 11/07/2022 14:14

There's a 10 degree difference between Scotland and Southern England today. A 9 degree difference from where I am in the North West. It's hotter down there in that there London.

And I have just checked it's 28 degrees where i am in my part of the Northwest and 30 degrees in London ,so not a huge difference.

Oroqpm · 11/07/2022 14:27

There's a 10 degree difference between Scotland and Southern England today.

There's places in Scotland today that are just a couple of degrees off London and others that are very different to that. The whole of Scotland isn't the same temperature, with an across the board 10c difference.

Trixiefirecracker · 11/07/2022 14:33

@BadAtMaths2 looking at average temperatures across the years. Plus I’m in NW and it says 26 where I am, which is hot enough for me!

ItchyBit · 11/07/2022 15:41

The one year we decided to have our summer holiday as PILs house south of London, it was freezing with horizon rain. We huddled for shelter behind a barn on the South Downs. This week they have >30 degrees. UK weather all over is unpredictable.

BringACarrot · 11/07/2022 19:46

I live in Scotland. It was 25° where I am today and generally summers here aren't as sunny or warm but certainly aren't cold or dull.

I suppose in sunshine terms we get longer days in the summer than down south so I'm happy to take a few degrees less of warmth in the afternoon. Longer days means more time in the garden than I'd spend if I lived down south. I also think its a different type of heat - I find London muggy/smoggy on warm days.

I love winter too though, nothing better than a bright frosty day to walk the dogs 😀

coffeecupsandfairylights · 11/07/2022 19:59

I'm in Cumbria. It was 22 today but with a "real feel" of 26 degrees - it's hardly cold!

I much prefer it up here as even when it's hot, it's less crowded. I can go wild-swimming or to the beach within five minutes if I fancy it.

Exactly. Lumping an entire country together to compare to London is pretty stupid.

The MN London-centric bias is alive and kicking- as always.

MeatballMeatball · 12/07/2022 07:21

But as a whole it’s colder and wetter and windier in the north west. It’s 8 am here, it’s just rained And it feels like18 C. It’ feels like 25c in london.

this summer there’s not been that many occasions where I’ve thought I’ll go out without a coat in the evening. This and last week has probably been the first week when that’s been ok.
