If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!

I am a soft southerner. Born just outside of London and other than when working abroad for long stretches, I have always remained in SE. So used to mild winters and generally always good summers, sometimes long stretches of beautiful hot sun and long days. Good job too that I love the sun!

my brother is going up to Inverness next weekend on a stag weekend. Forecast is 17/18 degrees and cloudy. Whereas forecast for where I live for next weekend is sun all day and 29/32!!

my sister will be in Newcastle up on Tyne - 20/21 and patchy sun

I know this will suit many but those who love the sun and warmth… how do you fare if live up north?!

I'm in the Yorkshire and it's plenty hot enough at around 30 🥵

HailAdrian · 11/07/2022 08:29

'The Yorkshire' 🙄

T'Yorkshire, surely?Grin

Aye it's reet grim up north. This was taken in the hills above Manchester yesterday BTW.

Your posts make you sound a bit dim OP. I'm sure you're not, but all this "grim up north" shtick is a bit tedious.

I say this as someone born and raised in a sleepy Hampshire village who's now living in Lancashire.

Just been reading my local news website ,apparently we can expect temperatures hotter than the Bahamas this week so🤷‍♂️

It genuinely is a fact that the south is generally warmer and sunnier in summer and milder in winter

jist like fact that the Spain is generally warmer and sunnier in summer and milder in winder than the south of england

its not a generalisation

it is a fact!

Yes it's a fact, your sneery generalised pops about the North and Scotland being miserable is why others are getting a bit pissed off with you. Especially as your experience is somewhat limited.

Belephant · 11/07/2022 08:41

Sorry OP, but I'd be more than a little irritated if I was your friend and always had to travel to see you because it rained one time you ventured outside your hometown and you couldn't face it again 🤣

Starmoonsunlight · 11/07/2022 08:44

Been hot and dry last week or so in the North West of England. London /South East is not for me in the heat, heavy and smoggy with no respite.

I go to Cornwall and now Devon every year at least twice to see a friend who lives there and it's always without fail worse weather there, colder, windier, wetter. People from the south of England are deluded about the North in general. I even had to show the surf instructor bloke the weather in MCR on my phone last time I was in Cornwall as he was "joking" about the Arctic climate in the North. Was 5c hotter with no rain!

BergamotandLime · 11/07/2022 08:46

I grew up near the south coast and now live in Inverness. I think your brother will cope just fine. I don't miss the humid nights, the days so hot that you can barely move, that feeling of being on a crowded underground with hoards of other people in sweltering heat and the only breath of 'fresh' air being when the tube rolls into the station. Instead, we've swapped that for clear skies, uncrowded beaches for miles, mountains - yes, I take a jumper with me most days just in case but it's a small price to pay.

Oh, and not to mention the winters - the days might be short, but you get clear, blue skies, icicles, snow, winter wonderland landscapes. I wouldn't swap it for anything now. Please don't be so supercilious. I think your brother might be pleasantly surprised by his stag do.

@MayDaze lovely pic! Maybe you should start a thread encouraging people to share their “it’s grim up north” landscapes. If anyone can capture the view through the blizzards natch.

BloodyHellKen · 11/07/2022 08:49

@Bertieboo82 I'm coming at it from a different perspective from you are as I'm originally from the W Pennines but have spent the last 20 years living in the home counties.
I love the landscape where I was born and bred but the weather is shocking. I've lost count of the number of times we've visited my family up north only to have days of endless rain while it's warm and sunny at home. They do get warm sunny weather, obviously, but it's fleeting random days.
I couldn't ever move back up there because I'd miss the hot sunny weather the south has and I find the constant rain and cloud depressing.

I don’t,it makes me miserable that we can never plan anything in advance because the weather is always shit!

It’s this that pisses me off too! I was down saaarf a couple of weeks ago and commented that it’s a completely different climate from where I live on the east coast of Scotland!
I cope by having lots of holidays in the sun-this year all my annual leave from work is being used abroad😂
I love where I live though-sunniest place in Scotland apparently-amd wouldn’t swap it

The North is a very big place maybe where you lived there were fleeting warm days ,but some places can have weeks of sunshine, we had endless fires on the moors a couple of summer, s ago because the weather was so hot for so long.

RampantIvy · 11/07/2022 08:57

On holiday in France at the moment and is well into 30s. So hard to actually do anything in that heat, is frustrating.

I'm curious as to why you would book a holiday somewhere significantly warmer than where you live if you dislike the heat so much.

We might be near each other. We aren't getting much rain in Lancashire this year, the reservoirs on the moors are less than half full. Grey days do come, but generally speaking I see enough sunshine - don't always get to make the most of it but that's another subject entirely! 😂

Delatron · 11/07/2022 08:58

I didn’t cope so had to move down South at Uni age and could never go back. As much as I love Yorkshire the weather was too cold for me.

On the whole I factor in usually about a 5 degree (at least) drop in temperature when going up North. Which is fine if it’s 30 ish down here. But if we’re having a crap summer (usual) and we’re just scraping 20 degrees down here - 15/16 up North doesn’t feel warm enough for me.

There’s currently a heatwave so it’s obviously unusually warm up there for now. 30 degrees up there isn’t normal. 25 is lovely. But not that common.

There were huge fires on the moors close to my home town, (W Pennines) it doesn't mean the weather is consistently warm though!!

RampantIvy · 11/07/2022 09:00

I agree that it has been drier than usual. The top part of Crowden reservoir is like the Sahara dessert. Our Yorkshire reservoirs in the Pennines are quite low, and our water barrels at home have hardly any water in them.

I'm still down south OP. I was up north at Xmas but tbh you expect the weather to be pretty poor then.
I spoke to my dad a couple of days ago and he was complaining about the weather up there and commenting on how nice and warm and sunny it looks down here.

It doesn't mean it's consistently cold and miserable either ,I live in an area of the west penines too ,we have had some really good summers over the past few years not just the occasional fleeting day .

Trixiefirecracker · 11/07/2022 09:05

I’m in the NW…been glorious here and have spent the weekend swimming in the Lakes. Even when it rains it’s beautiful so it’s a win win. 😁
