If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!

I am a soft southerner. Born just outside of London and other than when working abroad for long stretches, I have always remained in SE. So used to mild winters and generally always good summers, sometimes long stretches of beautiful hot sun and long days. Good job too that I love the sun!

my brother is going up to Inverness next weekend on a stag weekend. Forecast is 17/18 degrees and cloudy. Whereas forecast for where I live for next weekend is sun all day and 29/32!!

my sister will be in Newcastle up on Tyne - 20/21 and patchy sun

I know this will suit many but those who love the sun and warmth… how do you fare if live up north?!

I live in Yorkshire but I'm currently in North Wales on holiday. It got to about 25 degrees yesterday but was apparently 33 degrees back home, both of which was too hot for me anyway.

I've been on holiday to Cornwall in August in recent years where it's pissed it down for the entire fortnight, and once where there was an actual hurricane. The same two weeks in different years on the N. Yorks coast has been glorious sunshine and blue skies.

I'm not a sun lover, but the idea that only London and southern England gets hot sunny weather is ridiculous, quite frankly.

Fifi0102 · 11/07/2022 07:29

I've lived in the south I'm from the North West and I noticed hardly any difference.

TrashyPanda · 11/07/2022 07:31

its been gloriously sunny up here in the frozen wastelands of the central lowlands. But not so hot you can’t do anything without melting.

London in summer is miserable - too hot and humid and you can feel the pollution hanging in the air.

sleepismyhobby · 11/07/2022 07:39

I live in central Scotland. Was 30 degrees here yesterday and meant to be high 20's all week . Born and bread in Scotland I remember the glorious summers so hot you could cry an egg on the pavement .
Winter is often cold and dark . We haven't even had snow winter just past .
I think you need to stop generalising Scotland as it's pretty offensive

Summersdreaming · 11/07/2022 07:40

I moan a lot 😅the weather difference seems to be getting more noticeable to me too. It was 25° in Manchester yesterday, 28° today, but yesterday we wanted to go to the beach (Formby) and the forecast on the coast was 17° and cloudy. We stayed local and enjoyed the rare sunny day.

Snoredoeurve · 11/07/2022 07:43

I dont think anyone has actually suggested the sun never shines up north though.

Just come back from Northumberland, it was lovely but still a very chilly constant wind and we needed jumpers.

Generally the South has warmer weather and it does affect your mood and health.
Its not always boiling but no one bats an eyelid at 18 degrees let alone gets their top off 😂

BenCoopersSupportWren · 11/07/2022 07:46

I have a tiny bit of sympathy with the OP, although not the sweeping generalisations. I’m from the NE then spent nearly a decade living further south (not London or SE though), recently returned to the NE and it’s genuinely been a struggle to adapt back to the colder temps and less settled weather. This spring has been fucking dismal with too many grey skies and an incessant wind taking the edge off what should have been pleasant temperatures. Before this weekend we’d had about 4 separate days where the temperature reached 20° and actually felt like it with no wind chill.

Of course yesterday totally caught me out and now I’m sunburnt 🙄😄 It was a gorgeous day though.

However this is one of the driest parts of the UK and we get much milder winters than you might expect.

The Op herself suggested it and seems to smugly believe ,we never get any sun ,re read her rather dramatic posts, about biting winds in May and ,terrible holidays in Wales etc .

I'm from NI and couldn't cope with the shit weather so got out as soon as I could. London was definitely warmer! But the British climate was not for me, nor the Irish one ( I also lived in Cork), so I got out. Now in Oz and its midwinter, today its 17 and sunny, too bloody cold for me! Roll on summer, over 30 is good, over 35 even better! I even like it over 40 if I'm by the beach or pool. But its not just the sunshine, its the bright blue skies I love, all the grey in the UK gave me SAD.

Bertieboo82 · 11/07/2022 07:54

Blooming heck! No need for sympathy!

i think it is much chillier and prone to wind and rain than down south.

fact!

those who have said that they live there and it’s a struggle - 💐

those who have said that they enjoy the summer days and don’t mind the weather system otherwise and / or don’t enjoy hot weather - well, great. I am pleased for you!

In the North west by the sea and when it’s glorious, like yesterday, there’s nowhere I’d rather be. I start to melt nd get cranky when it’s too hot. Work in London on and off and lived in south west. The weather is better there. All year round. It’s more consistently good.

it’s been a poor summer here so far, very cold wind….

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/07/2022 07:55

I Scottish

I love the sun and heat on holiday beside a pool with a cold drink.

I detest visiting London for work in the high temps. I suppose I'd get used to it but I find it really unpleasant.

Much easier to live everyday life at 20-25C. That feels hot to me. I got sun burned and had a BBQ this weekend. We do fine.

And we get to sledge and build snowmen in the winter.

Bertieboo82 · 11/07/2022 07:56

It genuinely is a fact that the south is generally warmer and sunnier in summer and milder in winter

jist like fact that the Spain is generally warmer and sunnier in summer and milder in winder than the south of england

its not a generalisation

it is a fact!

Lived in London for over a decade. Moved down from Glasgow and now back on the west coast of Scotland.

I miss the dry weather in London. I didn't use an umbrella for years. But nothing beats the light nights here in the summer. And I love being able to see weather coming at you - don't get that in the city.

MIL hated the climate so much here she moved to Cyprus 15 years ago. But. She is always here for a month in the summer because it's too hot there!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/07/2022 07:57

Just had a glorious weekend sunbathing in my garden near Newcastle. I love the clear skies and clean air here, when I’ve been down south it’s always smoggy and humid. I don’t mind a degree or two cooler. It’s always cooler at the coast so I’d head inland if it’s a cooler day. Or just put on a hoodie. Ultimately I prefer it cooler if I have to work, I love the heat on holiday when I don’t need to drive or work in an office.

MintyGreenDreams · 10/07/2022 16:21

I'm in the North in Yorkshire and it's 30 degrees here

From Scotland- Yorkshire is down south.

How would you know having never spent much time in the North?

artisanbread · 11/07/2022 08:00

If your brother is going to Inverness for a stag do it is likely to be activity-based. I would have thought climbing mountains etc would be far preferable in 18 degrees than 30 degrees!

RampantIvy · 11/07/2022 08:00

I'm in Morpeth just now and the forecast for today is 26 degrees - perfect (but not usual). I live in Yorkshire and often get irritated by mumsnetters from London and the South East complaining about the heat when it is grey, cool and miserable where I live.

RampantIvy · 11/07/2022 08:01

I'm a soft southerners as well.

Summersdreaming · 11/07/2022 08:05

You are not wrong OP. As soon as I hear "hotter than GREECE" on the radio I roll my eyes and think yeah, in London maybe. We've had no summer in the NW until now. And I'm including the weeks where it's glorious Mon-Thurs when I'm in the office then gale force wind and rain all bastard weekend 😂

ItchyBit · 11/07/2022 08:07

Lived in London for 2 years, was a sweaty mess for much of summer. On holiday in France at the moment and is well into 30s. So hard to actually do anything in that heat, is frustrating. Will be 21 degrees when we get back to Edinburgh which sounds like perfect summer weather.

Thisbastardcomputer · 11/07/2022 08:17

I'm a wus I couldn't cope down south, as beautiful as it.

Went to Windsor to collect DH who had helped a friend move his narrow boat down there. God almighty the heat was horrendous, narrow boats are steel, I went inside to make a cup of tea, it was like entering hell. God knows how they managed to sleep.

fudfootedfannybangle · 11/07/2022 08:23

OP - I’m sure you’re not ignorant and you didn’t really mean to imply that Spain is a tiny, wee area “mild” in winter. Not like it’s got ski resorts, is fucking massive and parts of it are like the Scottish highlands. Cuz that kind of sweeping generalisation makes you sound like you need to travel outside the M25 and gain some knowledge.

soupmaker · 11/07/2022 08:25

@fudfootedfannybangle LOL
