If you love the sun, how do you cope if you live in a Scotland? Or north England?!

I am a soft southerner. Born just outside of London and other than when working abroad for long stretches, I have always remained in SE. So used to mild winters and generally always good summers, sometimes long stretches of beautiful hot sun and long days. Good job too that I love the sun!

my brother is going up to Inverness next weekend on a stag weekend. Forecast is 17/18 degrees and cloudy. Whereas forecast for where I live for next weekend is sun all day and 29/32!!

my sister will be in Newcastle up on Tyne - 20/21 and patchy sun

I know this will suit many but those who love the sun and warmth… how do you fare if live up north?!

You do know it’s in sunny in Scotland, don’t you?

it’s not always grey and raining.

Today near Edinburgh it is 27 degrees.

In the north the sun doesn't exist, we have icicles hanging in our houses all year round, we don't have electricity only candlelight, no running water either. We only have daylight 3 days of the year, in June. Colour was only invented recently, before that everything was black and white.

Meanwhile in the real world summer actually exists outside of London OP. There is a vast and interesting country you could try exploring a bit better.

👏

TheTeddyBears · 10/07/2022 17:58

I moan about it all the time 😂 I mean a lot!

I can't stand the cold and obvs it's just awful when summer isn't great after going through all the bad weather.

This summer has the been the worst I can ever remember. This wkend has been the best one all year. Today it was 23 and yesterday was 21 both gorgeous sunshine. BUT tomorrow bk to high of 19 cloudy and 60% chance of rain next, day high of 17 and 70% chance of rain and the same for the next 5days after.

I would leave but I'm close to my family so there are no plans to do so. So I'll just keep on whingeing and going abroad for my sunshine 😂

On Friday morning I put my heating on! It's been on this summer more than I can ever remember and that's me trying not to because of the cost now!

LouScot · 10/07/2022 18:04

Does anyone remember a thread last year where a concerned poster from London wondered how the poor Scottish children coped being back at school in August when the outside temperature was over 30 degrees 🤣😂

SeaweedPop · 10/07/2022 18:06

Southern England is not particularly sunny. 90% of the year it is dull and miserable.🤔

Lovelystuff · 10/07/2022 18:06

I’m in Kent and find when weather hits late 20s/ 30s I hate it. It’s unbearably hot 🥵

SarahAndQuack · 10/07/2022 18:06

Adding to the chorus. I'm in north Yorkshire. Today it was hotter at my workplace than in Santorini. I'm fine with the amount of sun. In fact I feel short-changed ... I want some cool, please?!

To be fair if I remember rightly it was pretty warm in Scotland at that time but you know we coped all the same 😆

Puffalicious · 10/07/2022 18:07

I can't stand these kind of threads. Why all the negativity? You don't like it? Stay away then. People who don't like living here? Move then
FGS where we live is about so kuch more than the bloody weather

This summer has NOT been the worst - people say this every year and it's just not true. April and June were totally glorious and July has been grand so far. I'm just back from 8 days in our camper van; it was windy at times but dry and so pleasant- 21 on the beach, 23 on land. Home today (in Glasgow) and it's 24 and wonderful. Glasgow does NOT always rain, absolute stereotype. It may rain more than the East/ down South but it's weather I can put up with for living in a wonderful city with quick access to amazing countryside/ coast.

PS I love London too, but absolutely could not live there at all whatsoever.

MintyGreenDreams · 10/07/2022 16:21

I'm in the North in Yorkshire and it's 30 degrees here

It's very rarely like this. I mostly envy people in the South and live for my holidays abroad.

Fawnia · 10/07/2022 18:11

It’s 27 degrees near Edinburgh and I’m fucking melting. The weathers just fine OP, it’s a slight fable that it’s always cold up here 😂

Mrsfussypants1 · 10/07/2022 18:11

Northumberland dweller here too. Haven't worn a coat since end of April, haven't put the heating on. Sweltering with blue sky's again today, lots of beautiful places to visit near by problem is choosing which one. Beach with a castle today, stunning and no overcrowding on the beach like down south. Never frozen over the winter, haven't had bad snow for years but love it when it. I wouldn't swap it for anything.

dontyoubother · 10/07/2022 18:12

There are so so many advantages to being in Scotland that I don't care about the weather, it's worth it.

Bananaman123 · 10/07/2022 18:14

At 18 in Scotland you get the men taking their tops off and walking around in shorts 😁

fudfootedfannybangle · 10/07/2022 18:24

I’m way north of Inverness. I’ve been enjoying the internet in colour and leaving my front door wide open because it’s not full of thieving cunts.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/07/2022 18:26

I like sunny days on holiday but I'd rather not be trying to get through a work day with the temperatures predicted in London next week, you can keep that level 3 heatwave shit.

MichaelAndEagle · 10/07/2022 18:27

I'm in Newcastle and have to go to London on Wednesday and I actually think I'm going to find it too hot! I need to use the tube as well 😩

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 10/07/2022 18:30

Bunch of folk in here who've never heard of taps aff.

Hellocatshome · 10/07/2022 18:33

I live in the North East and I can assure you we get many nice warm or even, like today, bloody hot days. The difference is the national news and weather dont go on and on about it like they do if there is a heat wave in the south.

audweb · 10/07/2022 18:34

Anything past 16/17 and it’s taps aff weather. I’m in sandals from about April to start of October. I’m further up than the central belt but it’s drier on the east coast, and pretty sunny too.

however, every summer I forget how miserable winter is cos it’s just beautiful up here when it’s sunny. And then winter comes and I wonder why I live in the UK. Repeat every year 😂

we don’t exist without sunshine, we do actually get some in Scotland.

icebearforpresident · 10/07/2022 18:50

I’m also in Ayrshire, right on the coast in a seaside town. Currently 18c and the beach is still heaving. In the heatwave last summer it was hitting 30c for weeks. While temperatures like that are rare your brother in Inverness doesn’t need to go buying himself thermals and survival suits, 17/18 is pretty decent, even if cloudy.

I remember the thread with the Londoner wondering how all the Scottish kids coped with the weather in September while they’re in school, pretty sure she also forgot that our kids finish at the end of June when the weather is also good.

Yup!

My happy place is Northumberland. Waves 👋

Weclome · 10/07/2022 21:36

I've lived in Scotland all my life and I'm not a fan of the weather, I like the heat but that said I love the fact that it's light at 4am just now and won't be dark till way after 10.
I travel to London a lot and can't get over how early it gets dark compared with here

SheSaysShush · 11/07/2022 07:12

OP - Wales? Narrow it down.

StinkyKid · 11/07/2022 07:20

Bertieboo82 · 10/07/2022 16:12

I don’t think you can describe yourself as “I am a Londoner” anymore if you moved to Scotland ten years ago!

I was born and grew up in London. I moved to Yorkshire 24 years ago. Although I have adopted it as my home county and had 2 Yorkshire born children, I am definitely not “from” here. My accent is far too southern. DH and the DC are…. They just let me live here. 10-20-30 years of living away from where you grew up is not enough to be from somewhere else.
