Anyone watching Robson Green north east weekend’s program.
I think it shows that the North East is a hidden gem. I don’t even care about his accent .
Probably because I haven’t got a strong accent myself. Obviously I sound like a northerner. But the north east accent is so different, depending were you are from.
Durham accent is different to Sunderland and South Shields etc.

Someaddedsugar · 31/01/2023 20:14

@lifelongfrugaleer I often think about things like your post. These threads started in covid and I wonder how likely it is that some of us have passed others in the street without even realising, or have been sat on the same bus or been at the same shop etc... Clearly I should spend more time thinking about my job than Mumsnet 😂.

Also laughing at the divebombing terns @PickAChew!

Hello @arabellasdress 👋.

I didn't realise how much north east accents differ @AlviarinAesSedai until I worked in the office I used to be in. The range with people being from just north of Yorkshire up to Berwick was so interesting! I think the north east is a hidden gem, and so often overlooked. We've got so much here but it never seems to be a focus. It's great that RG is focusing on the area!

@QuestionableMouse are they excited about having a day off?

Oh i think we probably have passed each other some

i will watch the Robson green thing, what channel is it?

AlviarinAesSedai · 01/02/2023 12:46

It’s definitely on IPlayer . I’ve just been watching that way. But it’s on every night, early evening. BBC 1 or 2

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/02/2023 06:19

I player will be it

myrtleWilson · 03/02/2023 22:50

Hello everyone,
Not posted in a while! hope you're all ok.

Tonight we went to Coarse in Durham as it was my birthday (50! - eek!!) this week. It was delicious and very unstuffy - thoroughly recommend!

AlviarinAesSedai · 04/02/2023 00:25

I want to book Coarse. Apparently booked up April or something for Saturday night. Happy birthday @myrtleWilson
Forgot to say hello arabellasdress.

Someaddedsugar · 07/02/2023 19:02

Happy belated birthday @myrtleWilson!

We went to Coarse for our Christmas do and the food was beautiful. Totally unfussy venue as you say and excellent service. Gemma is a brilliant in front of house!

@AlviarinAesSedai you should book now for a treat in the future!

OP posts:
AlviarinAesSedai · 07/02/2023 20:37

Yes, I will definitely have to book. I will need about 7 alerts in my phone, so I don’t forget. 😆.
The lighter nights are coming, can’t wait for spring. In fact the other day I managed to dry some laundry 🧺. The lambs will so be born 🐑.
Anyone been to Broom House farm and seen the billy no mates billy. The females don’t seem to be taking to him. 😆

Whiskeypowers · 07/02/2023 22:38

Is anyone else reading the Durham thread on chat ?!?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 07/02/2023 22:41

Yup! Love the number of people who have written the whole place off as a dump.

AlviarinAesSedai · 07/02/2023 22:54

They don’t have to visit, keep for locals.
Now I sound like Royston Vasey. 😆

lifelongfrugaleer · 08/02/2023 06:15

Nope they can’t defo stay away. Let them keep their whotsits wrong ideas (word escaping me)

It's pretty depressing. So many misconceptions and ignorance too.

Someaddedsugar · 08/02/2023 07:24

I was reading the Durham last night - I can't believe some of the comments!

Someaddedsugar · 08/02/2023 07:25

I'm popping to BHF this afternoon to stock up on the frozen pastries @AlviarinAesSedai - I'll have a look for the new goat bless him!

PacificCoastHighway · 08/02/2023 20:18

Oh wow I am surprised at some of the comments on the Durham chat!

We moved here a while ago and can honestly say the city and surrounding area is fantastic and so much safer and cleaner than anywhere we have lived before. It is a world away from my home town (ex-mining town) so maybe these things are all relative!

I hope everyone is doing well.

Someaddedsugar · 08/02/2023 20:22

It's a strange thread! Usually there's only a few posts on that type of thread but that one seems to be thriving on the negativity!

It looks like it'll be lovely weather this weekend - looking forward to spring emerging!

OP posts:
AlviarinAesSedai · 08/02/2023 20:41

Broom house farm has little farmers. Art/painting class or something.
I’m looking forward to the Ice Sculptures again, especially the fire and ice display on the Friday late afternoon, early evening. It’s on half term again.
Some of them on that thread obviously haven’t been to Durham for years!
I agree about the weather 😆.
But I live in one of the ‘pit villages’. Lived here all my life and the locals still don’t talk to me 😆

AlviarinAesSedai · 08/02/2023 20:42

County Durham also has one of the highest council tax in the country (bands).

PacificCoastHighway · 08/02/2023 20:49

AlviarinAesSedai · 08/02/2023 20:42

Yes I was shocked by the Council Tax when we moved here. I had assumed in the city centre it might be because the students don't pay Council Tax so the other taxpayers subsidise but that probably isn't right,

There is so much here for families. We are looking forward to Fire and Ice as well.

I take the point that the University dominates the centre these days but other town centres are pretty desolate now so I try and see some positives with that.

Someaddedsugar · 09/02/2023 07:39

I don't know if that's why @PacificCoastHighway but I remember looking on the council website and some areas pay some kind of additional tax when they're just on the outskirts of Durham - I know we do in our (pit) village.

@AlviarinAesSedai I've lived here 10 years and no one speaks to me either 😂.

In fact I haven't ever moved out of the north east and I don't think anyone's spoken to me in the way described on that thread so I take that to be a complete myth!

OP posts:
AlviarinAesSedai · 09/02/2023 08:55

We pay a parish precept. I always thought the higher council tax was because County Durham is a large area, but smaller population.
Also I’ve never said ‘howay’, but do say pet, far too much! Also bait, for packed lunch etc.
When I was growing up, my Mam hated slang.
Also the myth of cheap housing is going. Because nice houses are already expensive.

PacificCoastHighway · 11/02/2023 20:47

Happy weekend everyone!

I went to Boyes today for the first time today, it's a great addition at the Arnison Centre.

lifelongfrugaleer · 13/02/2023 06:19
