If you don't return your trolley at the supermarket, why is that?

A woman today, in a P&C space with no child (but that's a different argument) just let her trolley blow away after she'd put her shopping in the boot. I retrieved it and put it behind her car so she couldn't get out. She was raging!

Why do people not return their trolleys?

I do think it's a litmus test of whether someone is a selfish lazy twat or not (disabilities aside). A small gesture which takes a moment, has no benefit to the person doing it and is purely altruistic. Still too much effort for some, though.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 09/07/2022 18:47

The only time I’ve done it I was with all three kids (4 and 2x three months) and trying to get the trolley back in place without leaving my kids unattended was like a version of that thing with the fox, the hen and the grain. I console myself to think that someone would have taken it soon and pocketed the £1. I left it to the side of the pedestrian walkway, at least.

Cos I'm broken, especially after the shop. The trolley bay is far from the disabled spaces, and I sort of used it as a mobility aid.
And I would be fucking devastated if after doing the shop and loading it into the car some twat pulled a stunt like that.

Me too, it's not always laziness ffs and I enjoy know who made the OP the trolley police. Tescos aren't fussed in the slightest.

Can I ask the ones who leave their trolleys loose in the car park - if your trolley went into someone's car and damaged it, would you pay up?

Of course they wouldn’t. All this rubbish about ‘leaving them in a better place for the next person’ - they could roll downhill, blow away, obscure vision of a small child. It’s all pure laziness and a lack of regard for other people.

I don’t get this either. Strap the kids in, lock the car and walk the trolley back?

**don't not enjoy

Notanotherwindow · 09/07/2022 19:01

Where I used to work, we were not allowed to go home until the trolleys were collected and not allowed to leave the till during our shift. So it was a case of doing it after we finished when we were not being paid even our shitty minimum wage for it. Just because some cunt 'cba' to walk a grand total of 50 feet to return it.

Some people are such selfish arseholes. I honestly do understand why some people who get continually shit on in a lot of tiny ways eventually snap and shoot a bunch of people.

Tesco might not care if you abandon your trolley. But I care if your trolley bashes my car.

If you are disabled, could you not ask someone (including a Tesco employee) to return the trolley for you rather than just abandoning it? I'd be happy to help someone if they just asked.

What don't you get ? Quite frankly I would not leave my kids unattended either. Her kids safety is more important than taking a trolley back to the bay.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 09/07/2022 19:10

Op, well done.

Did the woman reverse into the trolley?

ChinBristles · 09/07/2022 19:10

Also, if someone looking after children asked me to put their trolley back for them, I'd gladly do it.

FFS it is a good job we all dont have the same entitled attitude.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 09/07/2022 19:12

All those can’t be arsed types - hope you
are never disabled and have to attempt to negotiate the footpaths and walkways in a wheel chair or when blind.

AitkenDrum1970 · 09/07/2022 17:24

Not only do I always put my trolley back in the trolley bay, I also tidy them up so they’re all tucked inside the right sizes! 😄

Me too! I hate them all just rammed in with no order...it takes up valuable space Grin Anyone leaving their trolley just rolling around the car park is just lazy.

ChinBristles · 09/07/2022 19:13

@WowIlikereallyhateyou no, she saw the trolley was behind her car. I stood a foot away and wouldn't have let it actually hit her car. She got out the car and remonstrated with me. I then just took the trolley into the shop with me.

my local supermarket got brand new trolleys, within a week there were gone, the small one is £175 and the big one is £258, that cost ends up going to the shopper as they price hike the shopping, i find most people put them back if they have had to put a £1 coin in them.

The communal trolley park near me, the trolleys need a pound.

They just a dummy/'fake pound' token.

curiousitygotthebetterofme · 09/07/2022 19:14

i can understand that there are times when somebody couldn’t leave a trolley back, for example young children. I think that’s fair enough, but try to leave it somewhere safe.

but I’d say most cases of stray trolleys are down to the user being lazy

ChinBristles · 09/07/2022 19:15

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 excellent point. Disabled people who feel entitled to abandon their trolley are actually making life harder for other disabled people who have to negotiate their way round them.

Why would her child be unsafe in a locked car, firmly strapped in, within viewing distance?

curiousitygotthebetterofme · 09/07/2022 19:20

But tbh I’ve had young children over the years and I’ve always left my trolleys back. Surely there’s more than one trolley bay in every shop car park that the user can go to? So go to the closest one.

even with children I’m sure they’d be ok for two seconds

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 09/07/2022 19:21

@ChinBristles yep they are just as bad (if not worse because they SHOULD know better) as non disabled people leaving their trollies all over the place. I agree that it would be a good idea to have trolly bays nearer to the disabled parking though.

If I were a god for a day - trolly littering would be punishable with instant death. ☠️

It wouldnt, but it is a great excuse to be a lazy arse!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 09/07/2022 19:30

Because they're "making jobs for the less fortunate" aka they don't care about making someone else's job easier because they're on minimum wage and therefore not as good as them

But they must have left the kids in the car to go get the trolley or manhandle them to the trolley bay, so you just do the same at the end of your shop, no?
