If you don't return your trolley at the supermarket, why is that?

A woman today, in a P&C space with no child (but that's a different argument) just let her trolley blow away after she'd put her shopping in the boot. I retrieved it and put it behind her car so she couldn't get out. She was raging!

Why do people not return their trolleys?

It's just good manners...but I guess that's a thing of the past too and virtue signalling if someone pulls another up for it.

Yeah. I think virtue signalling in the same way people who do whatever need other people to know.

In the days when I could do my own shopping it was often a struggle to get the trolley back, actually I can lean on the trolley to get it back but then need to walk back to the car.

I would try to park near the trolly return but if not I've often asked passing children (obviously check with the parents) to take the trolly back and let them keep the £1.

I'm happy to put the trolley back if it's convenient but if it isn't then I won't. I think it's like that virtual signalling thing where people are happy to show how decent they are.

I do it because it is the right thing to do. No-one is watching me or noticing me putting my trolley back.

I mean, it's annoying. But meh. There's worse things to get wound up about!

Fizbosshoes · 11/07/2022 08:28

For all the people who (out of principle) don't put the trolley back "because the supermarket does/should employ someone to collect them". The supermarket doesn't do things to make life easier for the customer, they do it to maximise profit. So the more people they employ, the higher their prices will get

How is it virtue signalling to put a trolley back??The only time I've ever mentioned it is on this thread! surely if no one put their trolley back it would be a nightmare to get out of the carpark..?

That's why I think that most people do, most of the time. If they don't they probably have a reason. I'd like to know who the people are that are doing all the stealing from supermarkets, the meat in our supermarket is now in the same type of box that perfume gets sold in.

How come theyve reduced staff so much and yet prices are higher than ever? Youd think with all the automation now, things would be cheaper.

Higher food prices have little to do with the way supermarkets staff their shops. They are due to things like-

Increase in cattle food prices.
Worker shortages in the dairy industry.
Increase in shipping costs for suppliers.
Coffee/tea and pasta production impacted by bad weather.
Lorry driver shortages.

Stuff that can't be sorted out by employing more staff at shops.

I honestly didn't know this trolley put back thing was a thing

It is simply common sense, in most of the supermarket car parks I have been in there is no space for trolleys to left randomly around the car park blocking pathways or potentially damaging cars.

There are too many people not blessed with basic common sense.

More likely it's selective social awareness. The sort who don't realise leaving your trolley wafting about is anti social but complain vociferously if one hits their car....
