If you don't return your trolley at the supermarket, why is that?

A woman today, in a P&C space with no child (but that's a different argument) just let her trolley blow away after she'd put her shopping in the boot. I retrieved it and put it behind her car so she couldn't get out. She was raging!

Why do people not return their trolleys?

There must be some truly enormous supermarket car parks out there! So vast that it would take several minutes to walk across them. Far too long to leave a child secured in a car seat.

Exactly… I think people either have too much time on their hands imagining ridiculous dramas or they are just bloody lazy!!

PlanetNormal · 09/07/2022 20:58

For the same reason I boycotted self-service checkouts for many years, and the same reason the heroic Mick Lynch of the RMT is fighting to protect his members’ jobs.

Because the skint student who is employed to work on the checkout or retrieve the trolleys needs their job and needs their wages. I was that skint student once, no bank of middle class mummy & daddy for me, so I know that by doing their jobs for them I am removing the need for that job to exist, and for that wage to be paid.

Serous question: what if your brand new car is hit and damaged by an out of control speeding trolley? I’m assuming your insurance pays it as it’s private land- if they can’t prove which customer caused it the supermarket won’t fork out, will it?!

curiousitygotthebetterofme · 09/07/2022 20:59

Can I just reiterate that whilst trolley staff are paid to move the trolleys to the front door of the shop from the trolley bays, no they aren’t paid to go and pick up stray trolleys due to the laziness and arrogance of individuals.

I can’t believe people think it’s ok to just dump their trolleys like this. I couldn’t forgive myself if i did that and it hit and damaged someones car.

i bet the same people don’t stack their plates in restaurants to make the job a bit easier for the wait staff!

I am realistic…sorry!! Can you remind me when a child was snatched from a supermarket car park whilst a parent was doing the right thing and returning a trolley !!
Car more likely to be hit by another car and burst into flames !! And that is massively unlikely!!

😂 this thread is becoming a tad bit dramatic. You do what you think is right.. I do what I know is right in the circumstances. A bit of advice always value your kids over a trolley. End of disagreement. I'm out 👋

Leaving your trolley in the middle of the car park is not helping Them.

nobody is saying that people need to go and leave them back to the front door, but at least put it back in the trolley shelter. It’s common courtesy. It could hit someone’s car.

Georgieporgie29 · 09/07/2022 21:05

Those people who won’t leave their children in the car to walk the trolley back to the trolley park, what do you do when you arrive at the supermarket to start shopping and head off to collect your trolley from the trolley park, do you leave your children in the car then?

Prinnny · 09/07/2022 21:09

Because they’re lazy fuckers! Some cockend left their trolley languishing in the aldi car park and I saw it bang straight into my car, I tried my best to run and stop it, as I screamed out nooooooo in slow motion but quite difficult with a baby in my arms.

Yes I had been shopping with a baby and managed to return my trolley unlike some shitty posters on here. And yes I am still bitter about it as I work hard to have a nice car and it cost me about £250 to get the dent out.

Some people don’t give a fuck about other people and their property! Selfish twats.

I, too, would like to know this.

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2022 21:12

At the supermarket my relative worked at the person that was on trolley duty was also on tills. There wasn't someone just employed to do trollies.
So they would have to be taken off the tills to do it, if they weren't returned to the bays it took far longer, and they'd be a till down.

Froodledo · 09/07/2022 21:14

I have mobility issues. I lean on the trolley for support. After doing my shopping and putting it in the car, I'm not sure that if I take the trolley to the trolley bay, I'll be able to make it safely back to my car.

HappyHappyHermit · 09/07/2022 21:14

Did this when my dd was a tiny baby as I couldn't carry her easily at times and the parking was well out of sight of the trolley area. I wouldn't leave my dd alone in the car for the world. I did always tuck it in and make sure it was safe though. I actually think you were wrong to do what you did and just lowered yourself to her level.

Awful - pity you couldn’t get cctv of the person who left the trolley that went into your car and get the police involved!

I’ve done it once. I hate myself. I was shattered, had to get to the supermarket and I honestly just could not make it that far and drive home. Ridiculous and I think about it daily

You're not being serious are you? You dumped a trolley and you are beating yourself up about it daily? Honestly, what on earth do you think you did, of all the even relatively minor 'bad' things you could do this has got to be bottom of the list! Forget it and move on.

crabbitmaw · 09/07/2022 21:20

Google this and there has been scientific studies into it; the ethics behind people who don't return trolleys vs those who do. Essentially, it's people who follow the basic rules of society vs those who pull the other way and rebel.

I'm a mix of the two; I return them if it's handy to do so and I leave them if not. I can life with this ethical blasphemy.

What did you do with her when you were pushing the trolley round the shop?

HappyHappyHermit · 09/07/2022 21:21

@Wouldloveanother She was in the trolley, but I couldn't carry her and lift her.

No, because I walk my children safely via the pedestrian walkways and zebra crossings to the front of the shop and collect one from there.

HappyHappyHermit · 09/07/2022 21:22

I also used to always put the break on the trolley so it wasn't going to wander off.

eatingasatsuma · 09/07/2022 21:23

And in my experience there aren't pedestrian walkways and zebra crossings to the trolley parks.

Put her in the trolley, wheel it to the trolley bay, lift her out, walk back?

HollowTalk · 09/07/2022 21:23

Crazy that people expect the store to employ someone to return the trolleys and then complain that prices are high

eatingasatsuma · 09/07/2022 21:24

And I didn't say I won't, I said I have done at times, there's a difference.

HappyHappyHermit · 09/07/2022 21:25

I did explain i couldn't carry her or lift her much and it was a long way. As a new mum I did what I could to get by. I hardly think a trolley not being tidied is the end of the world.

I’m a bit stumped as to how pushing a trolley of shopping/lifting bags into the car is fine but carrying a tiny baby is too much, but I shall leave it there.
