Hurrah.

Not till the autumn, though. And we may well end up with someone as bad or even worse.

urbanbuddha · 07/07/2022 12:04

He's trying to pull a fast one isn't he. Resigned as leader of the Tories but not as PM. He is buying time to plan his strategy to stay

Yep. Arrant nonsense, as Ruth Davidson says.

He will get no confidenced if that many MPs are unhappy.

HannahSternDefoe · 07/07/2022 12:06

Am I the only one that suspects the PM Statement (due roughly 12.30pm) will be "I'm going nowhere".
He's already filling posts...
Why?

He's either going or not - if he's filling posts he's not going.

MackenCheese · 07/07/2022 12:10

Kier Starmer is saying the same thing over and over again, like a wind-up doll. I agree BJ has to go today. But my goodness, Labour are utterly depressing!!

Homegettinginvaded · 07/07/2022 12:11

Am absolutely fuming that our local MP has accepted a cabinet post WTAF !!

indulgemepls · 07/07/2022 12:15

stratforduponavon · 07/07/2022 11:34

Labour are not in any position to win a GE.

Starmer and Rayner anyone? Unless they do a deal with the Libs or even worse Sturgeon. You can guess what her price will be. The voters will see through all of that.

If Conservatives can get a good leader - maybe Javid they have time to get themselves together but Labour on their own will lose an election. There were people in the run up to the last election still feeling that Corbyn would win.

I see some threads as well calling people who vote Tory idiots and stupid. That is exactly why Labour supporters are always surprised when the Conservatives win again.

It always surprises me that Abbott wins with a huge majority when she can barely string two words together and is clearly unwell and needs to retire.

But people do..

This is a really arrogant post. "Starmer anyone?". He is in fact an incredibly well respected human rights lawyer, with an outstanding track record of public service, unlike Boris. More pertinent, he has integrity. Something sadly lacking from the front bench (if there's anyone actually still sitting on it). Rees-Mogg anyone??

Ncwinc · 07/07/2022 12:15

’I'd quite like a leader with a bit of charisma TBF, nobody seems to have that.’

You’re not the only one. That’s why he got the job. That’s when he won an election with a big majority. The voters and his MPs knew exactly what he was when they picked him.

We value ‘charisma’ over integrity, competence and reliability. We get the leaders we deserve.

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 12:18

Henry Zeffman on Twitter:

Senior former cabinet minister who wasn't disloyal (until this week)

"People taking jobs now are making a big mistake if they want to be in government afterwards"

He is resigning as party leader, not prime minister. He has to have a working government until he leaves in the autumn. The man has no shame.

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 12:23

I want a Prime Minister who is competent and can steer us through difficult times.
I do not give a shit if he can make us laugh or look good on panel shows.
Starmer is a respected lawyer who knows his stuff. I would not pay to hear him speak as an after-dinner speaker, but he will be competent. We need someone who understands and cares about the economy. We need someone who understands and knows about the law and can guide us through the Northern Ireland Brexit issues.

Boris was elected as a charismatic leader who makes people laugh. He was also useless. Lets have someone competent who can do the job for a change.

They'd be daft not to. Take the position, serve over the weekend, by Tuesday the 1922 Committee invents a rule to impose a caretaker PM. Worst case is you do one weekend in post and get £15k severance pay.

Likewise Abbott. Her achievements are really extraordinary. Her parents were a welder and a nurse who both left school at 14, she was a child in the 50s and 60s when racism was endemic. At a time when opportunities for black children were dreadful, she got into Grammar School and subsequently Cambridge at a time when there were only three colleges admitting women. She was in Parliament at a time when there was no maternity leave, and was only allowed a few days off around the time she gave birth. She has carried on working in the most difficult circumstances, despite being the subject of unutterably disgusting racist attacks and threats. No member of the Conservative government can hold a candle to her.

HannahSternDefoe · 07/07/2022 12:27

Podium and crowd of staff in place...just waiting for the star to arrive.

Larry the Cat, obvs.

Depends whether they have any ambitions for office in future. There is a general view that anyone agreeing to serve under Johnson can wave goodbye to all that.

vera99 · 07/07/2022 12:29

She also had a stroke but hey overweight black Labour woman for the Hyacinth Bucket's to feel superior to...meanwhile sack of shit Johnson was burning 50 quid notes in front of homeless people whilst smashing up restaurants for a larf.

theworldhas · 07/07/2022 12:29

You mean the Tory Party electing a lying, lazy, incompetent clown as their leader WASN’T in the best interest of the country after all? Who on Earth could have predicted these things? Next they’ll be saying that leaving the world’s biggest trading block was also a bad move. Hindsight eh?

This. The party knew exactly what they were getting. They did not care.

Well said @AmaryIlis I'm old enough to remember her starting out in politics, what an inspiring and encouraging figure she was and then the first black woman MP. If you don't agree with her, fine, I don't agree with everything she says, but she is more worthy of respect for her achievements than the Bullingdon bunch will ever be.

wonkylegs · 07/07/2022 12:40

Well that was the resignation that didn't really feel like a resignation .... more of a drip drip of the end plus a "look how wonderful I am"

Lampzade · 07/07/2022 12:41

His so called ‘resignation’ speech was a joke.
This man does not think that he has done anything wrong. Deluded, liar poor excuse for a PM

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2022 12:45

Well he wasn't very happy at all - he called them all a herd, presumably of animals all following the herd instinct. Made me cringe.
I can only imagine the atmosphere in the cabinet until the new PM is elected is going to be very unpleasant indeed.
