I also want to add that all those last minute resignations, making out they’re doing it for the “good of the country” and because we all deserve honesty..well it’s too little, too late. They disgust me.

Absolutely.

All these ministers who have apparently either only just realised integrity matters to them or have only just realised Boris Johnson doesn’t have any integrity.

And everyone suddenly so appalled at Johnson behaving exactly like the person
everyone knew Johnson to be.

Self-serving hypocrites the lot of them.

Theresa May is giving the James Brokenshire lecture on public service and restoring faith in politics. 12pm today
www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/events/james-brokenshire-lecture

Should be interesting, on the day that half the country sighs and reckons she would be a very suitable interim PM

Starmer described them all as a bunch of lightweights. The same people who have tried to defend the indefensible for so long, finally ‘seeing the light’ is a bit too much to swallow for me.

I have my doubts as to whether this is really good news. I think we had a much better chance of a change of government with Boris still PM at the next election. We can only hope that the electorate will remember the sleaze and the lack of respect for the public shown by the Tories when they vote. Starmer had it right last night. The sinking ship deserting the rat !!

I know what you mean, but whoever takes over will have difficulty pushing the GE to the limits of the timeframe. They will feel the egotistical urge to get a "mandate", and will probably call a GE sooner than we would have had otherwise.

I don't think the voters will forget.

Just 3 years ago ....

SausageAndCash · 07/07/2022 10:35

Penguinwaddles · 07/07/2022 10:20

I said the same on one of the Johnson threads somewhere.
But so,some posted that he told Johnson he had to 9pm to resign. Johnson sacked him at 8.59pm.

Oh sorry I missed your earlier post itsgettingwierd. How intriguing! It has all been stage managed? I wouldnt put it past Gove tbh.

I wouldn’t put it past Gove to deliberately provoke Johnson into sacking him so that he could supposedly rise free of BJ association.

Everyone else was resigning. Hove had lost his limelight on that to Sunak and Javid, so made a high profile public show of challenging the PM. While everyone else was still resigning.

Of course. Tories more likely to win the next GE than ever without Boris Johnson.

This is great news for the Tories, if he’d stayed we’d have almost certainly ended up with Labour scum in power at the next GE. The new leader has a couple of years to make sure that doesn’t happen.

I do so hope you’re right.

Abhannmor · 07/07/2022 10:38

Ps Can't wait for his resignation speech.

Hoping it's a poison tipped hypersonic harpoon hurled into the rotting heart of the loathsome quivering reptile which is the modern Conservative and Unionist Party.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 07/07/2022 10:39

Minister for Cabinet Office n the commons now says he doesn't know what is in the statement and wouldn't preempt it.

After the revelations of the past few months, calling Labour 'scum' is a bit rich.

Penguinwaddles · 07/07/2022 10:40

Steve Baker preening in front of the cameras this morning with a confident air. Mmmm I wonder who is pulling his strings?

The Brexiteer faction are jostling to ensure that their supporters get in to positions of power in the new order of things ... .

SausageAndCash · 07/07/2022 10:41

I can’t stand all the ‘he got Brexit done’

He didn’t, NI still isn’t sorted and looks as if it can’t be without breaking law, our trade deals are … tumbleweed… the £ is at its lowest against Euro and Dollar, our GDP / growth is a shit show against every other similar country that had also dealt with Covid and ongoing Ukraine.

Brexit ‘done’ surely means country thriving and stable under Brexit? Not just signing the papers.

Oh: Brexit ‘done’ means the Gvt spend thousands on a consultation about pounds and ounces. FFS.

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 10:44

Abhannmor · 07/07/2022 10:29

With the exception of Mark Francois , Bridgend is the thickest person ever elected to the Commons.

I wonder if BJ sounded out the Palace about a GE and Liz said no way matey. You have a huge majority , get on with it or get a new leader?
Not like she owes him anything : he lied to her before.

The Queen does not have this particular power. Remember she signed allowing the illegal prorogation of parliament.
The Queen has nothing to do with any of this. She may be watching the news amused like the rest of us though.

Yes very much agree SausageAndCash

Gove has been keeping his head down. Boris owes him a few favours I imagine. Not sure but I think it is a possible scenario. The Brexiteers are all terrified in case a Remainer gets in power and the Conservative party swings back to the centre. And they all benefit from Murdoch favours by keeping the likes of Gove, Rees Smugg, Steve Baker etc in power.

pedropony76 · 07/07/2022 10:52

He’s still staying on until Autumn.

Thank God Boris is finally going but I think whoever will come next will only be worse

I don’t understand this.

We don’t have a Presidential system, the Government is made up of MP’s and the party with the majority put their leader in as PM.

Surely it is up to the party whether he stays as PM, not him?

I would have thought it was clear from the events of the last 24 hours that the last thing they want is for him to stay as PM. The loss of the two by elections took the shine off winning the vote of no confidence and given the revelations about the latest porkies he told regarding the appointment of Chris Pincher I think it was only ever a matter of time. He was reported to have tried to blame other MP’s for Pinchers’ behaviour, for not stopping him from drinking !! And if you think back, Tony Blair announced his intention to resign well in advance of actually doing so, so I don’t think there can be any requirement to stay for a full term.

Rosscameasdoody · 07/07/2022 10:58

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 10:19

It seems to have been pure childish petulance on Johnson's part. Gove gave him till 9 pm to resign so Johnson sacked him at 8.59.

Collusion ?

Trivester · 07/07/2022 10:58

Autumn should give him just enough time to go to war and unite the country behind him.

Take care and get well soon. My surgeon told me not to laugh or sneeze after my hernia. Tricky!

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 07/07/2022 11:01

He's trying to pull a fast one isn't he. Resigned as leader of the Tories but not as PM. He is buying time to plan his strategy to stay
Hold with the steamer Carrie

ChickenBurgers · 07/07/2022 11:03

Sulusu · 07/07/2022 10:23

Can't believe I'm saying it, but Theresa May would be the best caretaker PM.

Agreed. I never thought I’d be saying that myself but I miss the days of Theresa May and even David Cameron in all honesty. It was shit, but slightly less shit than it is now.

Hope you feel better soon.

I had surgery (hysterectomy) last week and despite having been uncomfortable and very tired can't deny being signed off sick has been great as I can follow this in real time Grin

Lampzade · 07/07/2022 11:06

He will leave Downing Street kicking and screaming
He will have more time on his hands now. This means he will have ample time to get himself a new mistress. Carrie better have eyes behind her head
