Just how fashionable was the colour brown for girl's clothes in the 70s?

I know hot oranges, brown, avocado etc were colours of the 70s. But I've never really known just how fashionable (or not) brown was for girls clothes? (under 10yo). I say this because my best dress for parties was a dark brown 3 tier affair and I felt like I was covered in mud, I hated it. I never really had pretty clothes. I've always wondered, were there mums in the 70s who dressed their girls in bright pretty clothes or was the market different back then?

My mum would dress me up like a doll so lots of pinks and reds, pinafores and bows

how we didn’t start electric fires with all the nylon we were wearing I don’t know

I loved my black patent ankle straps from Ravel difficult to walk in which introduced me to uncomfortable shoes so by the time I wore heels this seemed normal

picklemewalnuts · 03/07/2022 19:32

Shoes came in brown, black, navy and red.

Brown is really fashionable again now 😂 as is beige, putty and a colour that I shall refer to as stained flesh. I blame the Kardashians

I didn't wear a lot of brown but my father did his whole life. And I remember our house in the 70s having a lot of brown and green and orange. Family photos as a child I generally was wearing blue (Mum said my grandma loved little girls in blue so always bought me blue dresses) or I had a pretty pinky purple dress towards the end of the 70s which I loved. And lots of Clothkits clothes which were very colourful. We were comfortably off though.

ILIWYS · 03/07/2022 19:44

Can't remember much about clothes but I was allowed to choose my own bedroom decor when we moved house in late 70s/very early 80s and had beige carpet, dark brown floral curtains, brown floral wallpaper (different pattern to wallpaper) and beige & brown floral bedding (yet another pattern!)

StarCourt · 03/07/2022 19:46

I had a pair of brown trousers with orange golliwogs on.
Was also a bridesmaid mid 70', long pink satin dress with daisies on and a pink triangle shaped cap.

KohlaParasaurus · 03/07/2022 20:03

Oh, yes! All the brown. Brown velour skirts, brown corduroy dungarees, brown with orange and olive green, brown handknitted tank tops, and Magic Roundabout flowers. Brown knee length socks. Brown shoes. Ugh.

And then by the mid-80s, when I'd worked out that brown was the best neutral for my colouring, there was no brown to be found anywhere.

My party dress in about 1976 was brown patchwork with a white collar and cuffs. Floor length. I loved that dress (and still love a maxi dress, just not brown!).

dudsville · 03/07/2022 20:42

Oof, my worst dress of the 70 was a minty dusty gree number with a high neck, long sleeves that had white lace around the cuffs, floor length, with one tier towards the bottom and two rows of white lace all down the front. I have one pic. My hair is in the bun with the curly bits artly positioned beneath each ear. It was polyester. It would not die.

I’m loving the photos! Late 70s kid here, and there are a fair few photos of me in brown and orange striped acrylic polo necks with brown cord dungarees.

Even worse though was when brown made a brief reappearance around 2001-2004. I got myself a brown cord knee length skirt worn with brown knee boots, those brown opaque tights with diamond patterns in, and a brown cardigan and cream top. Thought I looked the bees’ knees, but why I apparently wanted to recreate my 1970s corduroy experience is beyond me ☺️ Thankfully it went out again pretty quickly when the Sienna Miller/Boho trend collapsed!

Adversity · 03/07/2022 20:55

I had a fabulous brown dress with yellow puff sleeves and an embroidered sunflower on the yoke, made of nylon obviously.

PlopPlop · 03/07/2022 20:56

Fabulous thread love seeing all the photos x

Adversity · 03/07/2022 20:57

OMG I just remembered I had a bridesmaids dress with a brown background covered in orange roses and white daises. Had orange and white silk flowers in our hair.

CathyorClaire · 03/07/2022 21:01

I had a brown school uniform Grin

Outside of school I had a pink puff sleeve shirt with multi-coloured stars worn under a red and white tank top with purple cord turn up bags and two-tone purple shoes.

I was the dog's dinner bollocks Grin

RockinHorseShit · 03/07/2022 21:01

I was a bridesmaid mid 70s fir my aunts winter wedding & I was forced to wear a brown knitted suit 😬

lakeswimmer · 03/07/2022 21:03

I was a bridesmaid in 1979 in a long dress with brown flowers on it. I also seem to remember an orange and brown dress with a pleated skirt.

iklboo · 03/07/2022 21:04

I had brown cords, a brown pinafore dress and a brown & cream party dress (long & frilly and I HATED it).

Giggorata · 03/07/2022 21:04

Brown everywhere. I had a nice pair of brown soft cotton loon- like trousers from the fairly new Chelsea Girl, which I wore constantly. Brown boots, brown antique leather handbag on a chain, dark green coat. Lots of mustard and burnt orange, too.
I got married in the 70s and had the full Kilncraft Bacchus dinner service, in mustard. We had cylindrical orange lamps, standard and table, with teak legs. Orange sofa and curtains, with brown rugs and an orange bedroom carpet.
Wow.
That phase (and the marriage) didn't last very long…

RockinHorseShit · 03/07/2022 21:06

Oh & I remember our kitchen at home was a mix of bright orange & mid brown walls & skirting board, brown & orange paisley rug & brown washing up bowls etc, heavy ugly brown crockery & orange accessories 🥴

RuthW · 03/07/2022 21:07

I was born in 1968. I had loads of brown clothes when I was growing up.

RuthW · 03/07/2022 21:08

My dd's uniform was brown and yellow when she started in 2001

x2boys · 03/07/2022 21:13

We did have a brown shag pile carpet in the bathroom and my bedroom late 70,s .

FadedRed · 03/07/2022 21:20

I loved my brown maxi coat, double breasted with gold (coloured) buttons and a gold belt buckle. My mum had to bribe me by paying towards a new coat when my beloved brown maxi was getting exceedingly shabby.

I was only three in 1980 but I wore a lot of 70s clothes in the 90s and about half of them were brown. The other half were probably orange, purple, shocking pink, powder blue or mustard yellow, or all of the above simultaneously.
