Just how fashionable was the colour brown for girl's clothes in the 70s?

I know hot oranges, brown, avocado etc were colours of the 70s. But I've never really known just how fashionable (or not) brown was for girls clothes? (under 10yo). I say this because my best dress for parties was a dark brown 3 tier affair and I felt like I was covered in mud, I hated it. I never really had pretty clothes. I've always wondered, were there mums in the 70s who dressed their girls in bright pretty clothes or was the market different back then?

Yes, my party dress was brown. It matched our bathroom suite!

Chikapu · 03/07/2022 18:47

I remember having the most fabulous orange corduroy suit, flared trousers with a matching jacket. I thought I was the dogs in that 😂

My mum bought me a long brown skirt and a cream top in the 70's when I was a teenager. I do not suit brown or cream.

I had a brown and orange smock dress. I also had a brown bridesmaid dress! But I remember wearing a purple denim jacket and jeans combo with floral appliqué which was colourful. And red and yellow platform shoes when I was 12.

I have a photo of my homemade (very) short dress which was pink with white Polka dots and a white frill at the neck and hem

Age about 8

I look ace in brown and burnt orange. Overdue a revival if you ask me.

DinosaursEatMan · 03/07/2022 18:51

I wore mostly brown and yellow, judging by photos. Both of which make me look ill and I have never worn as an adult. Occasionally a (brown floral) dress but mostly boys hand-me-down home knits. I vividly remember a friend who had brightly coloured pretty dresses though :(

My school photo for 1973 shows me in a brown floral dress with cream cotton lace trim. ( no school uniform). It actually suited my colouring really well and I love the photo!

midsomermurderess · 03/07/2022 18:53

I had a brown party dress with white spots and a sort of Peter Pan collar. I loved it.

mathanxiety · 03/07/2022 18:54

Not just brown but brown corduroy Smile

I remember a pinafore in a medium brown, worn over a blouse with a light tan background with little daisies all over it, and mustard coloured shoes.

That was really the only brownish outfit I wore. I was the blue child of the family. Blue matched my eyes. One sister wore browns iirc, again matching her coloring, and the other seems to have worn a lot of pink and purple, plus hand me downs.

We had brown leather shoes for school.

Brown crimplene pinafore
Brown crimplene flares
Brown hand knitted jumpers
Brown flowery corduroy party dress
Brown Clarks shoes
Brown bobble hat

The family photo albums do suggest I sometimes wore other colours too 😂

mathanxiety · 03/07/2022 18:55

@CheeryTulip - nothing to do with hand me downs or make do and mend, dresses were really short by design.

SwedishEdith · 03/07/2022 18:55

I also had beige corduroy lace up shoes.

Clovacloud · 03/07/2022 18:56

1970s child here. Every childhood outfit I had was brown or orange, or brown and orange print! Cords, dresses, polo necks and coats. Even our lounge was Brown hessian walls with orange egg chairs.

Guess what colours I won’t allow near my house 😂

NeedToKnow101 · 03/07/2022 18:57

I had some brown flares which had elephant knee patches, although I think they were my brother's hand me downs.

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/07/2022 19:04

I never wear brown now. Every photo of me as a child is in brown. Here's a headless me in my party dress - we could never stand too close to fires!

LaQuern · 03/07/2022 19:12

I had a floor length brown, flowery, frilly party dress.

100% nylon as well. A walking fire risk.

Eeksteek · 03/07/2022 19:13

My mother LOVED brown, for which I have forgiven her. The horribly garish eye-bleeding green floral decor still makes me feel so uncomfortable I can’t stay with her for multiple days. I just needed to escape from the visual busy-ness.

She has repainted lately, which has improved things somewhat. It’s still garish, but not so patterned. Her house looks like an autumnal nursery school!

Brown dresses, brown corduroy trousers, brown velure couch, brown wallpaper, brown and yellow fablon on the kitchen table and cupboard. 😂

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 03/07/2022 19:22

My sister had a lovely long brown/yellow flowery party dress and I had a brown dummy!!!!

I have a school class photo from 1979 and ALL the girls are wearing big chunky brown shoes.

suckingonchillidogs · 03/07/2022 19:24

Me & my grandad on our brown sofa, with brown and white wallpaper, he's wearing a brown top, brown trousers, brown socks and brown shoes. Brown was where it was at!

Just how fashionable was the colour brown for girl's clothes in the 70s?
blackberriesaretheonlyfruit · 03/07/2022 19:26

Definitely a fair bit of brown for me too not helped by the fact I got my cousins hamedowns. Sadly they were both male 😕

Crackercrazy · 03/07/2022 19:26

I had a long dark brown party dress as a child. I’m hoping it was fashionable!
