Just how fashionable was the colour brown for girl's clothes in the 70s?

I know hot oranges, brown, avocado etc were colours of the 70s. But I've never really known just how fashionable (or not) brown was for girls clothes? (under 10yo). I say this because my best dress for parties was a dark brown 3 tier affair and I felt like I was covered in mud, I hated it. I never really had pretty clothes. I've always wondered, were there mums in the 70s who dressed their girls in bright pretty clothes or was the market different back then?

Loving the photos! I remember dresses could be very short sometimes. Probably due to hand-me-downs & make-do&mend.

I was a teenager in the 70s and can remember wearing a lot of brown. I was particularly smitten with my brown suede shoes with orange stars on the toes, thought I was the bees knees.

picklemewalnuts · 03/07/2022 18:30

Very.
I had a ruffled brown chiffon apron over a cream under dress, full length.
There was a brown corduroy full length a line medieval shaped dress, with brown yellow and orange floral panels.

Those were probably my two best dresses.

No sugary pink or glitter back then!

I remember a lot of brown corduroy and an orange, brown and white crocheted poncho. I loved that poncho.

My mother bucked the trend at times and so we’d often get dressed in very bright colours. Like this delight I wore from around 1972!

Ponchos! loved my poncho.

Shock

Arrh yes the classic pairing of orange and brown. I remember a fabric which was orange with white and brown flowers (I can see it just not describe it) and somehow wasn't hideous.

Love it and the hair ribbons!

Lots of brown. I had brown cord trousers and also burgundy cord trousers. My “party” dresses when I was in primary were dark green, dark blue and a burgundy one. Don’t think I had a brown dress actually. My mum used to sew my dresses.

I wore brown school uniform including brown flannel knickers (with a pocket) from 1957 to 1968. My children were born in the early 1970s and none of us ever wore brown. I still don't. 😂
i wore orange in the 60s but the clothes we wore in the 70s were mostly pinks, blues, greys. Lots and lots of ClothKits. 😊

This is so funny. I was looking at dh's primary school class photos (born in 1969) and literally EVERY child is wearing brown or orange or both! The flooring is orangey-brown and the curtains behind them in the hall are orange and brown. The teacher is wearing orange and brown and has orange hair! Most of them are wearing brown shoes as opposed to the black you would find mostly nowadays (dh is rocking a pair of fetching brown kicker boots!)

I wonder what the colours of this era will be?

MuddlerInLaw · 03/07/2022 18:36

Orange and brown poncho, handmade by local knitting shop. Think I was 10. That was lovely. Was less keen, at 14, to receive a mostly brown knitted tunic, for a disco.

But apart from those things I definitely recall lots of pretty and fashionable clothes during my 70s childhood. The colours were … muted, mostly: burgundy hot pants, dark red and black Christmas suit, navy printed maxi for a school party. But there was blue gingham, and lots and lots of Bay City Rollers tartan. Hmm

In a nursery photo circa 1976 I am wearing a terrible brown with small green flowers dress, and in my mums wedding photos of 1968 the bridesmaids are all in brown floral. Writing this I remember a photo of me aged 7 at Christmas in a brown party type dress with a frilly collar.

I was dressed in orange and brown a lot, both colours look awful on me and I haven't worn them since.

My dad had a matching shirt and tie in that flowery design.

wishes it was the 1970s just to escape all the sugary sickly pink glitter crap we have now

LilianLenton · 03/07/2022 18:41

I was born early 80s & we had virtually no money so everything was 2nd hand. All my clothes were brown or cream. My "best" dress was a floral frilly brown delight with puff sleeves & a cream lacey trim. My sister had a blue & brown tartan horror with a massive square collar. We were so glad when we no longer fitted into them.

MadMadMadamMim · 03/07/2022 18:41

Oh yes, lots of brown. I look dreadful in brown. Brown maxi party dress that I hated. After that I had a bottle green maxi dress with a sort of cream blouse sewn in underneath it. Hated that too.

I had no choice about my clothes as a primary aged child in the early 70s and my mother's taste is definitely not mine. I also had dreadful summer dresses made by my granny from cheap material bought from the market. A line dresses tarted up with scratchy ric-rac braid around the armhole and neck!

HelloMaryJane · 03/07/2022 18:42

Lots of clothes in the seventies were very colourful. Later on I had several rainbow striped jumpers, red kickers and pink straight leg velvet trousers. I have a photo of myself in that outfit!
Men's clothes could be so much more colourful and the shoes were amazing.

suckingonchillidogs · 03/07/2022 18:43

I had a brown ra-ra skirt, loved it very much

paddingtonstares · 03/07/2022 18:43

Just remembered a orange velour dress I wore to a school Christmas party. That would have been 1973. I did love it though.

takeitandleaveit · 03/07/2022 18:45

Ah, the memories...!

My mum's brown, orange and green corduroy kitchen curtains were particularly special.😂

partystress · 03/07/2022 18:46

Lots of brown and orange, but also blues, turquoises and dark reds. Remember gypsy style fashion around 75/76 - little floral prints on dark backgrounds, and a lacy underskirt. I also recall spending hard earned Saturday job money on a tartan tent dress!

Never owned anything pink until I bought a pale pink shirt in 1978. Did have glitter in the form of a black tank top with silver lurex threaded through it.

Pre-teen, most of my clothes came from bring & buy sales and were as likely to be boys as girls.

dodobookends · 03/07/2022 18:46

Brown replaced purple as I recall. I had a pair of purple hot pants circa 1973

MumofSpud · 03/07/2022 18:47

My school uniform was brown and yellow (primary school 1977-84)
Then secondary school was grey and maroon Hmm
Chelsea girl only did fashionable school clothes in black and blue

Beamur · 03/07/2022 18:47

My best dress was a brown maxi with a sort of brown and white pattered bib front.
My favourite jumper was brown velour with an orange and white pattern on the front.
Favourite t-shirt was yellow nylon with a vintage car on the front.
And I also had the kilts - with a sewn on vest so it was like a dress but then you put a top on over it.
