Just how fashionable was the colour brown for girl's clothes in the 70s?

I know hot oranges, brown, avocado etc were colours of the 70s. But I've never really known just how fashionable (or not) brown was for girls clothes? (under 10yo). I say this because my best dress for parties was a dark brown 3 tier affair and I felt like I was covered in mud, I hated it. I never really had pretty clothes. I've always wondered, were there mums in the 70s who dressed their girls in bright pretty clothes or was the market different back then?

Yes we had brown shag pile carpet too.
I've just found a picture online of the wedges I had at primary school

I wore a lot of brown, yellow and orange I the 70's and really loved it. I did have some nice red and yellow dresses too.

I can't believe I found this pic. I was jealous of my friend who had platforms though.

Great thread! Lots and lots of brown, orange, cream, green, and some very bright colours. Also, any amount of denim and by the mid-70s, oodles of cheesecloth.

I had a lovely outfit when I was about 12 - short blue gingham pinafore over a blue gingham blouse with short puffed sleeves. I remember feeling very self-conscious when skirt lengths dropped in the early 70s as all I remembered was very short skirts and dresses.

Later, I often wore a short-sleeved knitted top over a long-sleeved blouse with the puffy bit of the sleeve over the forearm. This kind of thing.

I had a poncho similar to this but knitted by my mum and we had these plates ...

Ahhh , the 1970s. My childhood next door neighbours had a deep shag pile carpet fitted in their lounge and they had a special contraption to rake the carpet after anyone had walked on it. The same neighbours had me green with envy as the ‘pop man’ used to deliver bottles and bottles of (nuclear green) Cream Soda and Dandelion & Burdock every single week.

partystress · 03/07/2022 23:33

Omg @EmmatheStageRat I had completely forgotten our shag pile carpet rake!

I had a clandestine party when my parents naively left me home alone, allegedly revising for A levels. I was meticulous in mapping out where every ornament and knick knack went and stashed them safely away. Cleaned up thoroughly and got away with it until… Mum couldn’t understand why the hoover bag was full so quickly. It was all the shag that was normally under furniture and which we’d dislodged dancing!

Yes my long dress for parties was brown too and hideous.

I had those exact same shoes! I'd forgotten them until now. I loved them

As a child
I had a full length party dress
The long sleeves were brown chiffon
The main dress was white lace
Brown at the bottom

I also had some dark brown flared trousers

We had very few clothes
But the clothes were good quality & lasted

Giggorata · 09/07/2022 10:23

I had an orange and brown swimming costume which was made from thick towelling, it wicked up water and was so ridiculously heavy and saggy, it's no wonder I didn't learn to swim until later in life 😂

Babyroobs · 09/07/2022 12:00

Even our primary school's Gymnastics team leotards were the dreaded dark brown with a cream stripe ! My parents had dark brown and cream striped wallpaper and me and my mum almost matching long brown dresses for parties.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/07/2022 13:14

I remember that the only shoes in my size in Clarks were brown and I hated them. Dsis with more standard size feet (mine are narrow) could have red or blue patent.

I was also desperate for some brown knickers(!) just like a friend of mine in primary school.

I also remember a lot of orange and purple homewares, wallpaper and kitchens from that era. DPs baby photos are a hilarious and terrifying illustration of home decor trends at the time.

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 09/07/2022 13:31

Much of what I remember about the 70s involves orange and brown. Clothes, wallpaper, curtains, vividly patterned carpets and so on. These 2 colours are burned onto my memory forever.

I remember a lot of brown corduroy and an orange, brown and white crocheted poncho. I loved that poncho.

My mother bucked the trend at times and so we’d often get dressed in very bright colours. Like this delight I wore from around 1972!

I had a dress the same pattern and colour as your shirt in 1973, I was 3 😂 I loved it, it was nylon.
