It's 24th June - 1976 - and I'm off to the corner shop. I'm buying a can of Jusoda and a mint Cornetto.

What will you have ? Tooth decay and pocket money aren't issues.

I will have a Jolly Lolly and a can of shandy containing real beer then I'm going home for chips cooked in the oil that has cooled and solidified in the pan far more times than is probably healthy.

EscapeTheCastle · 24/06/2022 16:40

Could you get me a Misty Comic and also a copy of Jinty and Lindy comic.

Also one of those birthday cards that were long with a cartoon character on it.

Pavlova31 · 24/06/2022 17:02

Pacers. Lime and Lemon Lemfizz. Sweet cigarettes. Dark Secrets ( individual vanilla ice cream blobs coated in dark chocolate) also Grand Seville ( raisin and orange added) chocolate.

Raera · 24/06/2022 17:09

I'd like a bar of Old Jamaica chocolate and a bottle of Cherry B please. I was 18 during that summer, but had been a regular in the local pub for a couple of years already!

Knittingnanny2 · 24/06/2022 17:10

@FourChimneys I can still conjure up the smell of 1976 Banda machine fluid! Remember the mess it made on your fingers, the queue to use it and the sick feeling if it got jammed!

So as it is so hot tonight, we’ve had the brilliant idea of carrying our beds out of our hall of residence and sleeping in the tennis courts!
My mother would have gone bananas if she’d found out about that - what if BOYS see your nighties?”

LookItsMeAgain · 24/06/2022 17:17

The number of people who have mentioned Pacers - I wonder if the company that used to make them ever decided to bring them back, if they'd still be as popular now as they were then?

RainydaysandFridays · 24/06/2022 17:22

Findus crispy pancakes and a copy of Jackie.

2catsandhappy · 24/06/2022 17:33

Pick me up some Bazooka Joes please. I will do swapsies with the jokes!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 24/06/2022 18:01

Oooh some Ringos please - all the flavours!

WildRosie · 24/06/2022 18:38

Couldn't find Bazooka. Will Anglo Bubbly do instead ? There's no Texans or Old Jamaica either but I can see some Mint Cracknell and Aztecs.

The ice cream van owners are having a stand-off in the middle of the road. Cones at sundown!

Could I have a pack of fruit Polos, pls?

We've just got back from the beach and my thighs are burnt from the vinyl seats on the Cortina.

VioletLemon · 24/06/2022 20:11

A Kwenchy Cup, a 1/4 of cola cubes, a highland toffee and for later, a Fry's chocolate cream.

corlan · 24/06/2022 20:20

A quarter of cough candy twist please. 20 Consulate for my Mum and a pack of Hamlet for Dad. If they've got any - a pack of those tatoos you put on your arm, soak in water then peel off.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 24/06/2022 20:25

Can I have Cremola foam too please? Even though it's so sweet it makes my teeth hurt.

And some prawn cocktail Skips and a Golden Cup.

I'm hungry after spending the afternoon digging into the soft tarmac with a stick.

Honks · 24/06/2022 20:25

On my way back from Chelsea Girl.
Can I have a findus crispy pancake for supper please. Butterscotch Angel Delight for pud.
Happy happy days ☀️

CathyorClaire · 24/06/2022 20:56

Anyone up for a daring peek at Cosmo?

I'll swap a bar of Old Jamaica for a Milk Tray bar or even a pack of Munchies.

Mintola lovers need not apply...

CharSiu · 24/06/2022 21:40

A copy of Shiver and Shake, some flying saucers, strawberry laces and a sherbert dib dab please.

ThomasinaGallico · 24/06/2022 21:43

Cresta. I never get that at home and it’ll make a change from Waitrose own brand lime juice cordial. Oh and some Raspberry Ripple ice cream. What’s the mercury on the patio thermometer gone up to now?

(No cardi with school uniform again today!)

Knittingnanny2 · 24/06/2022 21:48

@Honks ooh Chelsea girl! Did you spot the size 11’s and 13’s? So glad I can buy the right size skirt - for my 25” waist, perfect size 13

Somebody sort out those ladybirds they're everywhere

I was just about to say that. God they were. I will have been having lime angel delight after my tea (still long for it) or maybe a supermousse. I also think this was about the time my mum discovered those individual pizzas (probably something from the findus or birds eye stall) that were actually horrible, but you sort of loved them because they were not meat and two veg. I never got on with toast toppers. My shop purchase would have been 2 oz of that claggy sherbert in a paper bag, we didn't have much money and it was the cheapest thing.

Knittingnanny2 · 24/06/2022 21:52

I’m enjoying this thread so much! It’s a real trip down memory Lane to my student days, first time I was able to be myself, let free from a very controllling and suffocating childhood.
I might go to the bank tomorrow and draw out out £2 of my student loan to get a bus into the city centre tomorrow and treat myself to a slice of that new cheesecake Ive just discovered in Rackhams food hall.

Jewelanemone · 24/06/2022 22:00

Now that my 9 year old self is over the measles, I'll lie on the lawn reading Blue Jeans or go out for a ride on my blue Raleigh bike, being careful not to catch my flares in the spokes. Hot, hot days of Ambre Solaire Factor 2. Mum's Scholl sandals. My yellow plastic ball of Kiku talc. Dare I buy some make up? Miners, or Boots 17 Twilight Teaser lipstick? No, too young! Happy days. I fancied the boy across the road who was staying with his grandparents all summer. Bars of Turkish Delight or Old Jamaica for my Dad, Frys Peppermint Cream for mum. That coconut and sugar tobacco for me. I can still smell the tar melting on the road and remember popping the bubbles with twigs.

Jewelanemone · 24/06/2022 22:01

Oh, and trips to the beach. The taste and smell of warm orange squash from a Tupperware beaker.

OldTinHat · 24/06/2022 22:09

Black Jacks please!

I think they should bring this out - Orange cordial with a hint of tupperware. I'd buy it.
