I’m round the corner at my Nan’s in North London. She’s sent me and my cousin to the corner shop for 20 No 6, a couple of bottles of Mackeson for her and Barley Wine for Granddad. My cousin and I can choose some sweets. I had a packet of Old Fashioned Spangles and John had an Aztec bar. We told her to put it on the slate and Nan would settle up next week when she’d been paid.

We dropped the fags and booze off. Nan and Granddad were on the way out to the pub with our parents. The key was under the back door mat, we could play out till it got dark. Then we could either go home or wait for them outside the pub on the high road, and tell anyone going in to tell Nan we were outside. She would come out with some bottles of pop and some crisps. If we were still outside when the pub shut, we got a tray of cockles each. If we went home, we’d hope to bump into our older cousin who would go home via the Chinese or the Chippy, and we would share. If we went back to John’s, we could have fizzy pop because the Corona man had delivered earlier that evening.

I want a square Dairy Maid vanilla individual block that fits in a square cone. I'm only 7 and still reading Bunty but I prefer my big brother's Mad and Whizzer and Chips.

Some proper rock hard Rowntrees Fruit Gums please. A packet each of Burtons Smax (chicken flavour) and Puffs (ready slated). And a can of Tab or Fresca - if they don’t have that then Corona Limeade please (can’t ever see that going out of fashion 😂 - every bubble’s passed its FIZZical…..)

Pineapple mivvi please, and a copy of Cosmo, and a can of Skol (tell Mr Ley it's for me, he knows it was my 18th the other day). And Mum says can she have 10 Silk Cut.

I won't be needing any pop because the Corona van is due any minute.
Wouldn't mind some Heinz sandwich spread for my lunch though.

I went back to the shop for cigarette and sweets but it's early closing. However, two rival ice cream vans are doing the rounds. In the interests of fairness, I shall but a Strawberry Mivvi from Whippy and a 99 from Softee.

I'm 5 and an ice cream van has finally made it up our hill, but by the time I make it up to the house through our big garden and back down with some money the ice cream van has gone 😫

I’d like a Walls Heart icecream, a Supermousse chocolate bar and a bottle of Coola cola please. We’re off to the river to swim, it’s so hot. The boys will tie string round the pop bottle and keep it in the water to stay cool. I’ve got a copy of ‘Mates’ magazine to read later.

Golden Wonder cheese & onion crisps and a wee tray of Nutella with a spatula that you could eat it from or use to spread on bread. Mine never lasted long enough to go on bread. And anyway yuk, but that's another thread 😂

My friend will share the peardrops while we spend the afternoon on our front lawn, collecting hundreds of ladybirds in a jar. We did release them once the jar was full!

Loved Top Deck shandy (with real beer😁) The glass bottle of poo and Golden Wonder crisps outside the pub, and playing out til dark.
I had Road tar on my feet for the entire summer, cos it melted in the heat. I also had a swimming cozzie rot away in bits, as I was either in the river or swimming baths for hours every day!!
Such lovely memories!
