I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Apologies that the prior thread filled up before I could create this one. Hopefully everyone will find it. Lurkers are of course welcome to unlurk.

I’m very careful not to weigh myself 😬

I looked up the nearest place that was doing walk-in Covid boosters and presented myself. There was a brisk queue and people were rather comically shifting up a place on a row of plastic chairs, but no sooner had we all moved up than the previous person came out of the consulting room and we all had to shift up again.

When it was my turn, I don’t think I’ve ever had an injection done so quickly - wham, bam, thank you ma'am!

IWanderedLonely · 14/10/2022 18:46

I've been flopped on the settee since I got home from work. I'm sooo tired. Actually thinking about going to bed now. Had 9.5 hours sleep last night.
DH bought a colour changing light bulb for the lamp, it has a remote control. It's very annoying.

MissConductUS · 14/10/2022 19:00

Well done on getting your booster, Hilda. The pharmacy that does our jabs is very efficient too.

Iwandered, I envy your 9.5 hours of sleep last night. I was awoken at 3:45 AM this morning by a loud buzzing sound. It turned out to be chainsaws. We had a lot of rain last night and a tree came down, so the town highway department was out in the middle of the night cutting the tree up so that it could be cleared from the road. The clocks on the microwave and stove were blinking when I got up, so the power went out overnight too.

I've just had a notification from our Ring alarm system through the app that the power is off again. So I called DS and there's a utility crew (wearing high viz, of course) just down the road, replacing the transformer. They had to replace the same one a few years about when a vehicle hit the power pole and it shouldn't take more than an hour or two. I had to sternly caution DS not to hold the door to the fridge open for an extended period while he decides what cold drink he wants.

He loves his cold drinks. We have apple cider (not fermented), grape juice, orange juice, lemonade, a Britta pitcher, and an assortment of fizzy drinks, mostly for him. Yes, the fridge is enormous. It's a 25 cubic foot LG. I love it. I am a bit knackered from getting up so early.

Power has been restored at home, and with it the wifi/internet connection. Poor DS had nothing but his mobile for two hours.

I heard a phrase " sometimes you just want the day to end so you go to bed early in the evening" not exactly word for word but it resonates with me. I'm also always tired no matter how much sleep I get

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/10/2022 21:43

No shame in taking a nap. 😴

IWanderedLonely · 15/10/2022 09:05

So I had 10.5 hours last night. Still in bed trying to summon the enthusiasm to get up. ( Got to be at my mum's in an hour so I'd best get a move on) I know I've had a cold, but I do wonder if somethings wrong with me.
Miss I love the sound of your fridge; ours is an under-counter one and putting the shopping away is a game of fridge tetris.

Lemonsandlemonade · 15/10/2022 11:41

Iwondered that’s how I felt when I had Covid a cold but sooooooooo tired and no energy despite loads of sleep.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 15/10/2022 12:58

We also lost power at home but we are away right now.

The elec company texted us last night to say power was restored at our address, then 5 minutes later texted to say actually it wouldn't be restored for another 24 hours at least. At this point who knows?!

MissConductUS · 15/10/2022 17:08

Fabulous news! The posh Italian supermarket has started selling its apple cider donuts with cinnamon sugar.

Iwandered, the only thing that concerns me about our fridge is how much power it must be using, but it is very convenient to have all of that space. For example, I bought two packages of the cider donuts, and I can just pop them in the fridge.

I've got a tall fridge, and I sometimes wonder how I ever managed with an under-counter one!

MissConductUS · 15/10/2022 19:06

Sue, when both kids were away at uni the enormous fridge seemed excessive, but now that DS is back it's often fairly full.

On my way out to the supermarket, I drove past the tree that came down on Thursday night. It's huge, and the cut-up sections are piled on the side of the road. I'm sure the town will collect them next week.

The trees around the house are starting to show a bit of color.

We only have a small and old fridge with a small freezer box. All grocery shops and markets are within walking distance.
In winter we use the (non functional) guest bathroom as cold storage. I spent today re-installing the shelves etc. for winter. Especially because 'brownouts' might be happening.
Miss Hooray for apple cider donuts 😀
I've started planning for christmas baking.

Lemonsandlemonade · 15/10/2022 19:28

Oh Prok what sort of things do you make for Christmas baking? you have reminded me to think about doing the Christmas pudding soon.

I know Christmas pudding is quite old fashioned in Uk but I love it with brandy butter on Christmas Day.

Apple Cider doughnuts were they nice MissC?

Went to a lovely garden centre today. Their Christmas display was magical. The lunch in the cafe horrible. We will be back but not for food!

RhubarbFairy · 15/10/2022 19:29

Evening all.

It pleases me to see that hi-vis still gets a mention.

I saw several men in hi-vis today as we visited the 'See Monster' in Weston-super-Mare (a seaside town in Somerset). It's a decommissioned North Sea oil rig that has been turned into an art installation that you can go onto. We climbed right to the top.

HildaTablet · 15/10/2022 20:14

Also eager to hear about your Christmas baking plans, Prok. I’ve had a book about German baking by Anja Dunk on my Amazon wishlist for ages, but I’m waiting for it to come down to a sensible price. I should accept that it’s not going to, and just buy it.

RhubarbFairy · 15/10/2022 20:41

My husband brought Lebkuchen home from the supermarket yesterday @Prokupatuscrakedatus.
I am very pleased to see its return. I'm coming to Germany next month for the Christmas Markets, I plan to eat my weight in them.

sproutsandparsnips · 15/10/2022 23:03

Lemons I shall make my Christmas pudding and my mincemeat next month on my week off.
Lovely pic Hilda - I have had my appointment for my booster but I must go 40 mins away as I have it by virtue of being patient facing so have to go where I work not where I live.

MissConductUS · 15/10/2022 23:03

Prok, I'm thinking about Christmas baking too. There's a butter shortage here at the moment, and the prices are sky-high, but I managed to buy six pounds of my favorite brand at the warehouse club. That cost me $30! Fortunately, good flour is still quite cheap.

Thanks for checking in, Rhubarb. That art installation looks amazing.

Lemons, the cider donuts are amazing.

The men are making baby back spareribs for dinner.

It'll be a never-ending circle; the more you eat, the more weight you'll gain-so you have to eat more to equal your weight...

RhubarbFairy · 16/10/2022 08:57

@sueelleker I'm okay with that. They can roll me back onto the plane.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 16/10/2022 15:38

Lebkuchen is not part of my tradition, neither is Stollen. I am from Spekulatius country 😁.
Normally I would not start before St. Martin's day, but the world and climate being what they are (draught, war, speculation with food etc.) and me being ill, I'll start early.

MargaretThursday · 16/10/2022 15:49

I'm unusually ill. It isn't covid, or at any rate I've had 3 negative tests, but I've had a high temperature and feel blocked up everywhere.
I have strong suspicions it's mostly to do with the stress I'm being put through at work because I got very wound up on Wednesday and then got it rubbed in on Thursday.

Am stuck between people I like and respect who are doing their best, and bullies who don't respect anyone other than themselves.
I'm also aware that if I go it may be a start of rats deserting so I feel a bit responsible.

MissConductUS · 16/10/2022 19:37

Welcome, @MargaretThursday, and thanks for sharing your medical news. Fever is an immune system response, so I think it being due to stress alone is unlikely. Get a PCR test for covid. The LFTs often give a false negative for the newer omicron variant.

Quit if it's that bad. The rats leaving a sinking ship won't be your problem, and no one should have to put up with abuse at work.
