I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Here is the link to the prior thread:

Apologies that the prior thread filled up before I could create this one. Hopefully everyone will find it. Lurkers are of course welcome to unlurk.

Lemons, you can't turn the heat up past 5 degrees? That's really cold! Are you going to replace the thermostat?

We only do McDonald's a few times a year. We're spoiled for choice for good takeaways and fast food dining. I'd much rather have texmex, which I can't make at home.

By the way, I already have two British podcasts in my daily feed. First is The Intelligence from The Economist. It covers three news stories every morning. The second is Ukraine: The Latest from the Telegraph newspaper. I'm A bit of a news junkie.

MissC it’s stuck on 5 degrees and the dial won’t turn up. It should be under warranty DH is checking tomorrow.

it means it’s very cold in my house.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/10/2022 15:06

Those 2 hours are still doing their job. The rooms keep the heat well.

I have made contact with a relative on the maternal grandmother's side. Sadly no information there, they were bombed out and all papers lost.
It is difficult to find someone called Anna Müller. There are millions.

MissConductUS · 11/10/2022 16:55

I'm glad you're staying warm, Prok.

It's been ages since I posted a reservoir picture. This one was early morning, with mist rising off the water due to the colder air. You can see the leaf color change is just starting.

Hi all - I just had a long catch-up read. Lots of love to Silkie and Prok, I'm so sorry for all you are both going through.

I'm still struggling with the new site. Either long threads don't load fully, or my typing keeps stopping while ads load. Anyway, enough moaning.

I nodded along to lots of things I read above but too many to reply to all. You are definitely my people.

MissC, I'm one of those mums who refused to let my son play American football in high school. I wince when I watch it!

It's fall here in New England, and it is absolutely glorious. Really really beautiful. I have house guests over from England and they are mostly driving around the place gasping and taking photos - I'm glad they managed to come at exactly the right time. We're going up to Acadia National Park for a few days soon for more leaf-peeping and hiking. (My computer corrected leaf-peeping to leaf-peeing which is something quite different.)

I am going to family weekend at DD2's college in a couple of weeks, which means I will hear her sing in the choral concert in the beautiful chapel there. I will cry... She is so much happier at college this year. She's made some great friends and she has a room with a beautiful view over the lake. She just came home for a couple of days and she was keen to get back to college, which kind of warms my heart because last year she would have been desperately delaying her drive back.

Then it's Thanksgiving, so DD2 will be home, but DD1 has to stay at college for an event, so we won't see her.

DS is at the stage of applying for college. I think he'll do 1.5 years at community college then he might end up back in the UK as there are more courses there that he's interested in.

DD is also looking at doing a semester abroad, so I may end up with two kids in the UK, which would give me a great excuse to visit. I went this summer and for the first time in 15 years of living in the US, I've been quite homesick. It was so lovely - the weather was beautiful, and I saw almost all of my family and lots of friends.

Other than that I'm just pootling along with work and life, and it's all quite peaceful. Doesn't life just rush by?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/10/2022 19:34

It's quite nice reading through this thread of civilised posts. No arguing, name-calling, or snide remarks. I'm glad I found it. 😊

I've been reading through the thread a bit and I just want to wish everyone well. Some here seem quite brave to me and I applaud you. 💕

I've started the process (because it is a process...), of researching washing machine makes as I plan to to replace my front-load LG that has a mouldy gasket and I can't bear continuing to try to keep it under control with the often intensive cleaning. I scrub it and dry it frequently, run the tub clean cycle, etc but I think the only option now is to try is removing and replacing the gasket and thoroughly cleaning out the machine once the gasket is removed; or, buy a new washer. @MissConductUS Thank you fir the advice re Miele. I am looking at this. 👍

In other news: the keys for the letters "T" and "H" keep popping off on my lap top.

IWanderedLonely · 11/10/2022 20:15

I am spending a ridiculous amount of time looking at rugs. The size I want doesn't exist, I can't make my mind up about colours, the ones I really like cost £££. Then DH put a shelf unit back up in the front room & managed to knock off a chunk of plaster in the process.
Still, in good news my washing dried outside todaySmile. What an exciting life I lead!

HildaTablet · 11/10/2022 20:23

I took two car-loads of horrible, wet, old carpet to the local tip. They’ve been dumped outside in the back garden following our house renovation. It was a horrible job but I’m glad I did it. There’s more to go but I’ve made a decent dent in the carpet mountain.

I thought about painting (the primer coat on the new plaster) but didn’t do any. I have bought the paint, the rollers, brushes and a paint kettle, though.

Lemonsandlemonade · 11/10/2022 20:44

Yay my thermostat has been fixed! I now have heating which is lovely! Cost an eye watering £260 for a thermostat.

I wandered I love it when my washing dries outside.

Hilda sorry silly question but what is a paint kettle?

Mumto- yes it’s a lovely thread.

Here I have a hacking cough ( not covid) which is annoying and draining.

HildaTablet · 11/10/2022 21:11

Just a small bucket to decant the paint into, basically, Lemons! Like this.

Glad your heating’s fixed.

DH and I honeymooned in New England after our October wedding, the colours were incredible and the weather was super. We were very lucky and I’ll never forget the trip. The colours are looking rather fabulous here at the moment too. DC4 and I drive through literal mists and mellow fruitfulness on the way to school.

I had to scrape the windscreen this morning and DH crunched around the field sorting the ponies.

@ZZTopGuitarSolo, it's so lovely to get your update! Thanks for letting us know what's going on in your neck of the US. Life does rush by. I'm so glad that your daughter has adjusted to life at college. Leaving home for the first time was stressful for both of my kids too. Good luck to your son as he figures out his college plans.

Helena, I took another picture at the reservoir this morning that shows the color changes here better than yesterday's shot. We're still weeks away from peak color. New England is lovely in the fall.

Lovely picture!
DD just stormed in: she already has all the obligatory points she needs for her subjects. She visibly relaxed and will concentrate on getting a thesis topic and get some extra "fun" points.

sproutsandparsnips · 12/10/2022 23:13

I love the pictures Miss! Autumn is my favourite season by far. Our local canals are beautiful. It's so uplifting.
Glad your thermostat is fixed Lemons hopefully you will be warm now. Sounds like you are of a similar mind to me re: autumn Helena.
3 long days done this week and a couple off now, so hope to get an autumnal walk in!
How are you doing Silkie?

Sprouts those are gorgeous!

Lemonsandlemonade · 13/10/2022 06:57

What lovely pictures. Did my first GCSE English class last night and it was the first ever time I understood and got what was asked in the questions. The tutor was great at explaining what was expected.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/10/2022 07:02

Sprouts Lovely! Autumn is wonderful with all those colours.

It is cold-ish here but sunny and a neon of hi-viz men are fixing the fassade of the house opposite using power tools.

HildaTablet · 13/10/2022 15:09

Some great pictures there. Here’s one of mine to add to the autumnal mood.

I've had my Covid booster booked for several weeks now, all scheduled for this weekend, so I was very unimpressed to get a text this morning cancelling it because of 'staff issues' and telling me to rebook it. The first available appointment isn’t for another month so I’m not happy to be unprotected for a further 4 weeks when rates are now going up.

I've identified a couple of places that do walk-ins so I might try and get it done next week.

mathanxiety · 13/10/2022 18:11

Lovely Autumn photos!

We've had chilly mornings and dry, warm days for much of late September and early October so far, and probably as a result, the sugar maples have been truly glorious this year. We had a good deal of rain yesterday and a cold front blew through so there are a lot of beautiful red leaves on the ground, but still enough hanging on to look spectacular. It's colder today than it has been to now, but not as cold as it will get when Winter settled in.

Lots of Hallowe'en decorations have appeared all over the village. Squirrels are enjoying the pumpkins. DD3 was astonished to learn that Hallowe'en can be spelled with the apostrophe, and what the word means. I am sure she had known this many years ago.

There is a lot of sewer and drain work going on around town, with many hi-viz clad men standing around while one or two stick orange hosepipes into manholes and storm sewers. Traffic is horrible as a result.

Good to hear your news, ZZ

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/10/2022 18:21

Thanks to those posting pics showing beautiful autumn. 😊
My DC has noticed squirrels and birds and is fascinated!
I made banana bread and added chocolate chips, which I typically do.

MissConductUS · 14/10/2022 00:40

My rather expensive Taylor bathroom scale has lost the plot and is giving me wildly inaccurate readings, so I've ordered a new Amazon Basics one that was only $20 and works much better. I'm glad I didn't shell out for another Taylor/

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/10/2022 10:08

We still use the analogue scales from 34 years ago.
It is still accurate and "unkaputtbar" 😀
