I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Here is the link to the prior thread:

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 22: Calmly through the day

Apologies that the prior thread filled up before I could create this one. Hopefully everyone will find it. Lurkers are of course welcome to unlurk.

We all seem to be making apple based baked goods. 😀

I have a small bruise on my arm where they drew blood yesterday after my physical exam. I'm surprised as the needle stick didn't hurt at all.

I'm off shopping. The Italian supermarket I shop at has moved into a much larger store, so I'll stop there and have a nosy. I have to take some pictures as I'm on another thread where it is taken as gospel truth that we don't have ready meals in the US.

MissConductUS · 27/08/2022 16:52

The new store is gorgeous and at least twice the size of the old one. And I have proof of the existence of American ready meals. These are really good too.

DH has brought back a huge bag of apples from an orchard where the ponies live. He tried to offer me some at lunch, it tasted like a lemon with a faint hint of apple. I think I’m going to have to get cooking with them…

Lemonsandlemonade · 27/08/2022 19:58

Oh Apple cake I forgot how much I like apple cake.

Oh no deathray that’s such a pain.

Took wellies back and had quite an expensive lunch out. DH ordered and paid but £39 for two quiche and salad plus tap water and two soft drink is a lot for round these parts. Was lovely but was a bit 🙈😬 at the price.

can’t believe summer is almost done and dusted.

HelenaJustina · 27/08/2022 20:04

That would be a lot in these parts too lemons! £25-29 would be more the ball park I think.

MissConductUS · 27/08/2022 20:38

Deathray, the train strike has been in the news here but I didn't know it affected buses. Are the strikes nationwide or just around London? Here getting an Uber is usually cheaper than a taxi.

That is a lot Lemons. Did that include tax and gratuity?

I'm being ignored on the other thread. Perhaps they're annoyed that I've proven them wrong about there being no ready meals in the US. Can anyone confirm that the pictures I've posted are of ready meals?

DS is on his way home from his holiday in Boston. I had to ring him to find out when he'd be home. He should be here in time for dinner.

Lemonsandlemonade · 27/08/2022 20:54

MissC included tax but not gratuity. In my experience gratuity is only added in higher end posher places in Uk. Sometimes I feel that mumsnet is a very strange place. Yes I can see the ready meals. They look posh compared with the average ones you get at the supermarket.

Re strikes there are lots of industries striking at present MissC. In Scotland for example the bin men are on strike in many bigger towns and cities.

MissConductUS · 27/08/2022 21:15

Lemons, it's a pretty posh supermarket, and the meals are very good. DH picks them up for his MIL. We buy a lot of their meat and bakery products because the quality is so high, and they have the best pizza dough.

I guess the strikes are not surprising, given the cost of living increases, but for some reason, we don't seem to have them here. Our energy costs haven't gone up as much as yours, though.

What prompted you to say that sometimes you feel MN is a very strange place?

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 27/08/2022 21:15

DH picks them up for his mum/my MIL.

OP posts:
Lemonsandlemonade · 27/08/2022 21:28

I think MN is strange because it can be a lovely supportive site but in my opinion some threads/ posters are slightly bonkers. Like ignoring someone who makes a very valid point and can prove it ie like the ready meal pictures.

MissConductUS · 27/08/2022 21:55

Lemons, I think you are right, and it's down to a psychological effect called cognitive dissonance. When people strongly think something is true, they become quite resistant and annoyed if you tell them that it's not. People here believe all sorts of rubbish about the US (inevitably how it's inferior or lacking something compared to the UK), and they don't care to be told the truth. I see this regarding education, health care, food, housing, taxes, etc. It's just endless.

Changed the bedding today and took first Tamoxifen. I already hate it, only 9.999 years to go.

Glad your results were not too bad Prok

Those look very posh meals MissC Over here ready meal is more used for mass produced identical over the cheaper pre-prepared meals. Its things like this: www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-roast-chicken-dinner-400g-7370929-p-44 That is still a ready meal but its not what people refer to when they use the term. That looks like a meal from a deli whereas ready meals is generally cheap meals (maybe £2 or £3 each from the supermarket) though you can get luxury ones from the supermarket which are more like £5 or £6 which are quite a lot nicer. Those also look big compared to our ones.

DD has got in to the 6th form she wanted to do 4 A levels.

That sounds like Floof and DH Math with the cat, the cat always runs between his legs as his is going up or down the stairs and the he shouts Floof and Floof looks like what I did nothing and then comes with me.

MissConductUS · 28/08/2022 01:35

I'm sorry to hear that the tamoxifen doesn't agree with you, Silkie. Some of the side effects, like headaches and hot flashes, typically diminish over time as you adjust to the medication.

That ready meal from Sainsbury looks a bit basic. The prepared meals from Uncle Giuseppe’s are of restaurant quality. The trays in those pictures are large and intended to provide two adult portions. They also sell single-serve portions, but they are more expensive per serving. When DH buys them for his mum, he gets the large ones, divides them into quart ziplock bags with one serving each, and freezes them before taking them to her.

Congratulations to your DD on getting the placement she wanted.

It's lovely to have DS home, and we had a nice dinner together.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/08/2022 13:17

Silkie You'll need to experiment a bit. I found that taking it at the same time every evening helped. My DM found that for her mornings were best.

I am feeling full of housewifely virtue today - and less ill. I managed DS's access to his "virtual study place", and therefore could sort Kindergeld for DS, did the 60°C load of washing and sorted POA's for DH and DS so I can do stuff for them.

You can get both kinds of ready meals here - though not in the ALDI and Penny type supermarkets - more the KAUFLAND types.

Silkierabbit · 28/08/2022 14:55

Glad you have your DS home MissC

Thanks for the Tamoxifen advice Prok and MissC I am going to experiment Prok, I took one yesterday at 6.45pm and I think the time was fine as I could sleep still (quite unusual for me) but I felt quite sick with it and got tingling everywhere and itchy. I already have hot flushes and those did not change but that is mainly at night and when I wake up first thing I feel very sick and dizzy but that is pre these. But then I drink and gradually gets better. I have a numb arm. And sometimes who side is numb. And eyes are blurred but its pre these. I see oncologist on 8th so will see how it goes. Today I will try it with food and see if that stops the sickness as I felt less sick after eating. I am also worried by the I put I on masses of weight stories but then there were those for chemo and I put on nothing. One place says a veggie diet but there are some strange things online so will ask oncologist.

Deathraystare · 28/08/2022 14:56

@MissConductUS

Not sure. Only concerned with London!

Ended up getting a cab but had to walk up the road as police were stopping everyone coming further. So had to ring my evening taxi people to pick me up at another spot. Stupid me thought we could get in the back way!! My feet and legs are killing me!! Oh well , just one other day of it!

Plastichanger · 28/08/2022 15:47

Just catching up. Congratulations to your DD, Silkies and well done on your DS’s vacuuming/noise progress prok.

Death I hope your recover quickly (feels really weird, writing that bit - how can death recover?) from your commute.

in dull news all the raspberries from the garden this year taste a bit sharp. Not sweet at all so I am freezing them with a view to making jam at some future date.

MissConductUS · 28/08/2022 17:17

Silkie, do speak to your oncologist before changing your diet or anything else. A lot of what you read online about cancer treatment is rubbish.

Death, I hope you feel better soon. Are you on medication for the RA?

Prok, well done on your fit of virtue. I am having trouble summoning anything similar.

I had my flu jab this morning at the pharmacy. I'm trying to get things done today as I don't expect to be doing much after the surgery on Friday. My last hurdle is getting a covid PCR swab test done in the morning tomorrow.

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 28/08/2022 21:40

I've just had a two hour nap. I think the flu jab knocked me for six.

DD has texted to say she can't make the family zoom call as she has a meeting of her crew team.

OP posts:
halfpasteleven · 28/08/2022 22:18

Well done to your DD Silkie and I hope you can figure out the best time and way to take the new drug.

Good luck with the Covid test tomorrow Miss.

In dull and unexciting news I have cleared out three wardrobes (mine, DS and DD) and have the bags ready for the charity shop. All bedding and towels washed and put away including heavier duvets etc for Winter.
And in case the above makes me sound like super mum we are trying to potty train DD without very much success.. I don't think she's ready for it.

Lemonsandlemonade · 28/08/2022 22:22

Gosh Silkie 4 A levels is ambitious but fair play to your DD.

Hope you feel better soon MissC. Only time I have ever felt Ill after vaccine was after flu one when in was pregnant with DS.

Took DS on lovely walk today. I forget about this place but live so near it. Unable to upload more than one picture.

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 23: Calmly through the day
MissConductUS · 29/08/2022 15:54

Lovely picture, Lemons. Any scene containing a body of water or a river is so calming. That's why I love walking by the reservoir. I find it really fiddly to post pictures using the MN smartphone app.

I got to the lab this morning at 8:10 for my PCR swab and was done in five minutes, then called the surgical scheduler to let her know so that she could be on watch for the results.

OP posts:
HelenaJustina · 29/08/2022 18:28

Halfpast you have all my sympathies, potty training is exhausting for all concerned!

halfpasteleven · 29/08/2022 22:21

I hope you got a negative on your swab Miss and that you are not feeling so tired today.

Today was a better day Helena, I'm taking it one day at a time for now as yes it's certainly exhausting!!

MissConductUS · 29/08/2022 23:11

Halfpast, I'll probably get the results tomorrow or Wednesday. I'm optimistic it will be negative. I'm a bit knackered today, but better than yesterday.

The men are making pizza with pepperoni and bacon. 😀
