I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Here is the link to the prior thread:

Apologies that the prior thread filled up before I could create this one. Hopefully everyone will find it. Lurkers are of course welcome to unlurk.

In our ward bay they have a portable air-con unit running (the actual air-con being buggered, natch) keeping the temperature down to 34C. It's quite warm.

Good luck with the radiotherapy Silkie, sounds tough.

MissConductUS · 19/07/2022 15:55

echt, it's a bit late, innit? I hope they don't assess penalties and interest for the last 99 years.

Silkie, radiation therapy is usually less stressful than chemo. Good luck with it.

The forecast here is for a high of 34C, so not terrible.

Doc What exactly is a ward? Is it what I (or better my DB) would call a "Station" or is it a room where patients are in their beds? Google is not very helpful.

DS has asked to be given a structured time table with tasks to work through.

MissConductUS · 19/07/2022 17:14

Prok, a ward is a section of a hospital where the patients are receiving similar care. So you have a maternity ward, a post operative ward, a pediatric ward, etc.

OP posts:
DoctorTwo · 19/07/2022 17:22

Yes Prok, Miss has it. Although in my case I am a surgical patient on a respiratory ward, though they haven't operated yet (hoping was admitted with breathing problems which have been largely alleviated by iinserting a couple of drains into me, one of which is still there.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/07/2022 17:56

Doc, Miss So it is a 'Station'.
Google gave me "a room where up to 12 sick (same illness) people are in their beds" - that must be an older definition then.

DHL informed me that they did not find us at home and delivered the parcel to a neighbour. They did not ring - there have been 3 people constantly at home. And they did not tell me which neighbour.

Silkierabbit · 19/07/2022 20:27

Thanks DrTwo and MissC I have heard its normally a lot easier than chemo and its only 5 sessions which is good.

Sorry its hot on the ward DrTwo Chemo was always sweltering (think its so they stand more chance of getting cannulas in) and I used to take ice lollies.

Very hot here today 41C and no air con so drinking lots with ice cubes and living off Ben and Jerrys ice cream. Floof has been trying to sunbathe and having to move him.

Other than that a tutor came for DS but only stayed 30 mins as he hid. Then I did DSs English online lesson but that was over in 15 mins as I think the lady was hot. DDs work was postponed due to heat but she is in tomorrow. DH was wfh in the heat, he manages better than rest of us with heat.

Its now down to 34C at 8.30pm and says rain coming tomorrow, hope so.

MissConductUS · 19/07/2022 20:50

Prok, a ward is not a station. A ward will have at least one nurses station, which is an open work area where nurses can perform tasks when not providing patient care.

Nurses Station

In the old days, wards were large, open areas with many beds. That has given way to semi-private and private rooms to give patients more privacy and to reduce the spread of infectious pathogens.

I really feel bad for everyone suffering so from the heat with little to no air conditioning. I'm spoiled by having it everywhere.

Silkierabbit · 19/07/2022 23:02

In the NHS most people are treated on wards, normally larger open area with beds maybe 1 to 2 metres apart with curtains that pull round them when doctor comes. If you go private you generally get your own room and bathroom as far as I know, I always have.

Chemo, not sure if that was a ward as such but was about 20 people on reclining chairs about a metre apart having treatment at the same time. 2 toilets between the 20. Radio is done on your own, think due to radiation. A & E its rare for it to be a private room but had that once but that was only as they weren't sure if I was negative for covid, I was but had asthmatic type cough. Maternity was on a ward both times though both times gave birth in a room. Though once was induced due to complications, once was a water birth so not sure what happens with a straightforward birth.

First op for breast cancer was on a ward but in one of the community hospitals as main hospital was full, that was like a scene from 1950. It was just me and one other lady that afternoon with our surgeon so we got put to chat together. Second operation was private and own room and bathroom.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/07/2022 07:14

Silkie Ah. "Station" ist not the same as "station" then. A false friend.
Your 'station' would be 'Stationsbüro', the office / admin / control area, where my DB spends his nights between rounds.

And wards like you describe are found in ICU areas, where people need to be strictly controlled and observed. My dad was on one like that. Apart from that I have not seen wards in the last 40 years. Max. 4-bed rooms with WC and shower and strictly enforced headphone use for TV - I was glad about that.

I whish you all the best for your radio therapy. I have been told that it is less stressful than chemo. I hope that is true!

halfpasteleven · 20/07/2022 08:37

Best of luck with radiation Silkie and hope you get good news Dr Two.

Congratulations on your new job Helena.

Good luck re the invites Miss C.

Hope everyone is safe and well from the fires especially.

We will do some baking today I think, or cook something nice for dinner. Pan fried chicken with baby garlic potatoes and salad.

We will also go for a walk and bring a carrot for the horse we meet on the way.

halfpasteleven · 20/07/2022 08:39

And happy birthday Prok!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/07/2022 08:47

Thank you all for your kind birthday wishes!

DH just counted 50 ripening tomatoes.

sueelleker · 20/07/2022 08:49

Prok; when my DH was having his bladder tumour removed last November, he was on a 6 bed Urology ward.
In other news, my BIL came and fitted a new garden hose for me yesterday afternoon-then it rained!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/07/2022 12:42

We have a shallow plate on the balcony filled with water for birds and insects and a little basin for our little solar fountain.
A crow has decided that this is the ideal place to take a shower. It flopped down among the plants, looked at me and jumped into the basin. Mr and Mrs Morose are regulars, too. But they do not shower they only drink.

Silkierabbit · 20/07/2022 20:00

DD had a morning shift at her new job, putting the boats on the river and loved it and they asked her to do the whole day. She had written a list of everything interesting that happened to her today for me and her boyfriend and went through it with me.

I got my dates for radiotherapy through, starts on 4th August for a week excluding the weekend. Then a follow up by phone on 30th August and in person on 8th September for hormone therapy, side effects and reconstruction surgery list, will be a while yet for that. I feel like its already over but bit to go yet but worst is done.

DH goes tomorrow to renew his French passport and we have a tutor round to the house again for DS in am who he will almost certainly hide from and they will stay about 30 mins again, at least that's what happened 3 times so far. I have his last online English. Term ends on Friday not that he has had any school for 6 weeks now. I have a call tomorrow to discuss September.

Am following the Conservative leadership contest. The favourite is now a lady who used to visit my flat a lot about 15 years ago and DD was amused that she and DS danced with me and her kids in a circle at a party about 10 years ago.

Floof has been doing a lot of flooping stretched out today, was cooler today at 28C but for some reason felt pretty hot. He is currently chasing an insect.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/07/2022 20:07

Sensible cat. I did a lot of flooping today, too, but I refrained from chasing insects.
Temps. dropped to 30°C.
DH (whose father is from the area around Rome) is disgustingly awake, full of energy and happy not to feel cold.

Silkierabbit · 20/07/2022 20:22

Floof also got super excited as I had bought him 40 tuna tins and he hasn't had any since our holiday, he flew across the bedroom in two 2 metre leaps to his tin, ate it faster than the speed of light and now has been sick. Thankfully DD pointed it out to DH who cleared it. Floof is back to flooping again.

I have also been largely flooping too Prok all I am capable of in heat. DH fares much better, must be the French in him. Impressed DD managed to work 9 hours outside today.

MissConductUS · 20/07/2022 20:42

I heard on the news that temperatures were a bit cooler today. They're getting hotter here.

Silkie, I'm envious that you have your dates. I still don't have a date for my surgery. Apparently, lots of people are involved in the scheduling and some critical person has been out. I'm about to email the surgeon about it.

In good news, the road works near here are almost done and the site is devoid of men in highviz. They are reportedly waiting on a delivery of asphalt. So I was able to ignore the barriers and walk up to the reservoir, where I found a duck parked on the spillway, not doubt trying to cool off. It's 35C here today. I still managed to walk two miles.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/07/2022 20:45

Douglas Adams - I knew I had seen the word floop before. But I am not called Sem.

Silkierabbit · 20/07/2022 21:51

Hope you get dates soon MissC Some of the waits here are horrendous atm, that is the one good thing with cancer you don't wait too long.

This is Mr Floof on DDs bed, flooped apart from the head. DD appears to have cat TV on for him but he does not look too impressed. He has been trilling a lot today.

HelenaJustina · 21/07/2022 06:28

Thanks for the good wishes all! Last day in current school with children in today. They leave at 1:30 so it always feels a mad rush.
I will work tomorrow and one day next week to get everything ready for my hypothetical successor. Then the aim is to have a proper break before starting new job on 31 August.

Current headteacher has not yet told staff I’m leaving, the pressure of pretending I’ll still be here in September and keeping it secret is almost overwhelming.

IWanderedLonely · 21/07/2022 07:49

Helena why on earth hasn't she told the staff, odd.
Glad you've got your dates Silkies
Hope you soon get yours confirmed Miss
Sorry not to name check everyone, supposedly only sat down for 2 minutes to drink my water & lemon . . . 20 minutes later I'm still hereHmm

Madbadandusuallysad · 21/07/2022 07:52

The water company are replacing pipes and one of the exposed , unfinished site ones is leaking onto the road. The neighborhood WhatsApp group is having a field day with this, collecting water for their gardens and comparing how many watering cans worth they have bagged.

This is as exciting as it gets in our sleepy little collage!!
