Where would you live if you needed to be with an hour of Bristol?

Just that really! We're thinking of relocating. Need to be within an hour of Bristol and don't want to go East.

I'm floundering because we could literally go anywhere in those parameters and there's too much choice!

Thanks. 😁

What's your budget and would you need to drive or use public transport into Bristol? Do you have young children?

riesenrad · 18/06/2022 18:43

Cardiff

Do you want a village, or bigger than that?

The Chew Valley area is nice- villagey though.

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 18/06/2022 18:50

Not necessarily helpful but.. I'd live in Bristol! It's s cracking city 😊

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 18/06/2022 18:57

We'd drive for commute.
2 kids under 6 and 2 dogs!

If you are Frome people, you will LOVE Frome.

I like a village but small town would probably be best suited for us.

Sorry; budget up to £450,000. Maximum. Prefer nearer 3/350

Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea, Keynsham

I used to live in the south of the valleys in wales. Most of the east side of south wales is within an hour of bristol.
Nice with dogs, lots of pretty places to walk etc and in most places a lot less expensive than bristol

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/06/2022 19:03

Cheltenham

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/06/2022 19:04

Wells is friendly, nice palace gardens to play in with the children, and quite good value for housing.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/06/2022 19:04

Oh sorry that’s east!

GoodThinkingMax · 18/06/2022 19:05

Devon?

Exeter is an hour on the train to Bristol.

Snailsaresweet · 18/06/2022 19:08

@SummerHouse Noo... I'm in Frome, which is indeed an hour from Bristol via train or driving. House prices are rising, local people can't afford anything and the infrastructure isn't really coping with larger numbers. Although if the OP is looking for something 2-3 bedrooms under £450k, they will struggle to find anything nice anyway.

MissyB1 · 18/06/2022 19:09

Cheltenham is lovely but you would struggle on that budget.

adagio · 18/06/2022 19:09

What are your future plans (will you both be working in Bristol long term or is it a stepping stone?) and what do you want from schools/education?

Personally I like the Welsh borders - Chepstow, Caldicott, Monmouth, aber , Forest of Dean etc. but that could pull you into Wales for education & politics which you might want to avoid. Most people seem to have strong opinions on the diverging education systems in England v Wales so depends which camp you are in! Also risk the bridge might start charging again.

Also depends which end of Bristol you are commuting to - it takes ages to get across the city so do you need to be south / east of it or north/west (ideally)?

MixingPopAndPolitics · 18/06/2022 19:13

Cheltenham.

Techno56 · 18/06/2022 19:16

You may already be aware if you've lived in the city itself but it can take an hour (or more..) to get from north to south Bristol in rush hour so just make sure you don't live too far away.

It takes me half an hour to go 6 miles at 7:40am 😅

BlueRaincoat1 · 18/06/2022 19:17

Keynsham. Right between Bristol and Bath, lots of primary schools, amd within your budget. On the train line (8 miss to Bristol) or driveable within an hi even at rush hour.

devildeepbluesea · 18/06/2022 19:21

I live near Cardiff so am an hour from Bristol. It’s a great place to live - city, country, beach within easy reach. But tbh the traffic would put me off commuting to Bristol. I’d look at Monmouthshire and South Gloucs.

bbqhulahoop · 18/06/2022 19:23

If you need to drive you need to be in bristol suburbs- traffic is that bad!

RelocationNightmare · 18/06/2022 19:26

We live in west Wiltshire now so we already do the commute!
