Where would you live if you needed to be with an hour of Bristol?

Just that really! We're thinking of relocating. Need to be within an hour of Bristol and don't want to go East.

I'm floundering because we could literally go anywhere in those parameters and there's too much choice!

Thanks. 😁

Clevedon! Lovely for little ones x

Forest of Dean, lovely place to live.

Badger1970 · 18/06/2022 21:51

We live in a gorgeous village in between Tewkesbury and Gloucester, and work in Cheltenham. Bristol can take 35/40 minutes on a good day, but last Saturday took me over 90 minutes to get to BRI. The trouble is the M5 interchange with the M4/M32 and where it goes to 2 lanes. It's nearly always a fucking bottleneck and I have to be very well persuaded to go anywhere near it.

ColmanFlamingo · 18/06/2022 21:51

Chepstow is very popular with Bristolians and a lot have moved there since the Severn Bridge stopped charging tolls. This does mean the prices have sky rocketed and you definitely need to do your research to find which are the nicest areas.
Caldicot, Tintern and many surrounding villages are lovely.

Staying in England you could try Easter Compton, ideal for commutes and shopping. Or many Olveston and villages around there. I've also heard Yatton is nice?

Arnaquer · 18/06/2022 21:56

Newport. It's not all bad.
Cwmbran.
You'll get more for your money. I have a few neighbours that commute to Bristol

BackToTheTop · 18/06/2022 22:08

Chippenham
Malmsbury
Bath - kind of east
Wotton under edge
Tetbury
Stroud (pushing the hour)
Wye valley

Watto1 · 18/06/2022 22:13

If you go for South Wales, make sure you are somewhere that has access to the M4 at J25 or eastwards. J26 onwards means that you will have to contend with the horrendous bottleneck that is the Brynglas tunnels.

WibblyWobblyBoat · 18/06/2022 22:30

Magor.

Great village with a lovely square, plenty of thriving independent shops, affordable housing and direct access on to the M4 at J23.

Magor school was a lovely little village school in the original buildings next to the church and I remember carrying our belongings over to the new school when it opened in the 1970’s! Still seems to have a good reputation but it was fab when I was there - you could tell where the headmaster had been as you could smell his pipe smoke!! And we had great school lunches cooked for us including a 3 course lunch every now and then!

Hoowhoowho · 18/06/2022 22:31

Newport. We have a massive 4 bed bought recently for 418k. It’s not considered desirable like Cardiff so housing is cheap. It’s easy to Bristol by car or train. I preferred rural but I grew up rural and I didn’t want that for my kids as teens. Newport is easy access to Cardiff, Bristol and London by train.

Thornbury

Blondeissimo · 18/06/2022 22:35

Portishead or Clevedon.

caringcarer · 18/06/2022 23:14

Monmouth, Wales.

Oioicaptain · 18/06/2022 23:23

I hate to say it but your budget is fairly low for Bristol. However, you might find something within budget at Portishead or Clevedon (both within a 20 drive of Bristol). In terms of your budget you will get more for your money in Yatton or Weston Super mare. If you like the countryside, then you may find something that suits in the Chew Valley or on the outskirts of Bath. Commuting can be hard though as both can be bottlenecks in the traffic. Bradford upon Avon is nice and has good train connections to both Bath and Bristol. Froom is a little further out, but just on the radius and is nice and friendly.

Oioicaptain · 18/06/2022 23:33

Also, I would take your commute time and double it/halve the distance for Bristol. It is renowned for being worse than London for traffic. Traffic obviously dropped considerably during lockdown, but is starting to ramp back up now. Some days I can make the three miles into the centre in 15 minutes, other times it's 30-45mins. I used to have to travel across the city up the M32 and in rush hour it could take over an hour for an 8 Mile journey. You'll probably find that if you actually want to travel door to door within an hour, you will need to be considerably closer to Bristol than you think. The southern side of the city has a quicker commute in generally (Clevedon/Portishead/Yatton side). If you have to cross the city/use the M32 in rush hour, the circular ring road, A4 between Bath/Bristol or travel out towards Filton, you could be stuck in traffic for a long time.

Oioicaptain · 18/06/2022 23:36

Sorry, I meant Southwest of the city.

Absolutely this!

Don't go further than Magor otherwise the commute could be awful. Might be ok from the new Glan Llyn estate just down towards Newport from Magor and you'd probably get a bigger house there for the money. Although in the shadow of the old steelworks and galvanising plants...

If you're looking for a 4 bed house you might struggle in Chepstow and the rural surrounding areas for the money except perhaps for Sedbury.

Monmouth would be too long a commute imo - it's 20-30mins at least through the wye valley to Chepstow.

Lydney should be commutable (although sometimes bottlenecks in Chepstow from Sedbury onwards) and is usually a bit cheaper than Chepstow.

Caldicot/Sudbrook would definitely be commutable and you'd probably get enough house for the money (at the top end of your budget).

Ballsaque · 18/06/2022 23:39

Clevedon (nice houses,swimming lake)

Nailsea (nice and quiet but I’m not so keen on the houses)

portishead (lido!)

Agree with this. Some of the suggestions are lovely places but are nearly an hour's drive to Easton in zero traffic - at standard commuting times it will take much, much longer, especially during term time.

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 19/06/2022 05:53

As an example, I used to commute between south Wales and east Bristol - it was a 40 minute journey in zero traffic. In reality, if I left before 7 am I could usually guarantee to be at my desk about 8 am. If I left later than 7.15 am I could be pushing 9 am before I started work. At the other end of the day, if I left at 4 I could usually hope to be home by 5.30 but closer to 6 pm wasn't unusual. I wouldn't even bother leaving between 4.30 and 5.30 pm as I'd be on the road so long it was better to wait for 5.45 and get home by 7.

Swindon

Really????????

@RuthW can you name any redeeming features of Swindon that would tempt the OP to move there?

OTOH, the OP’s house budget would buy a lot there whereas in most other places suggested, it’ll be tight.

riesenrad · 19/06/2022 17:19

I think Chepstow is nice, but having looked at the map it's on the wrong side of Bristol for where you need. I was going to suggest Taunton as well but that might also be too far.

Maybe look at train lines and see what's on the lines into the Easton area. I would think that anything on that side of Bristol would be more expensive though as you are getting towards Bath and desirable Cotswolds.

riesenrad · 19/06/2022 17:20

Or better said - Easton is on the wrong side of Bristol for Chepstow (for the avoidance of doubt I do know Wales is west of Bristol Grin ) I didn't however know where Easton was.

ValerieDoonican · 19/06/2022 18:02

Bit mystified why anyone would choose to drive in to Bristol regularly for work - the traffic is horrific, and eventually your conscience would point out to you that you were contributing to the problem 😅
