The worst thing about having no money

letsallmeetupinthehyear2000 · 18/06/2022 14:16

is after a hard week at work you look at your bank balance and not only have you no money but you are overdrawn you can't go out and enjoy yourself or even buy yourself a tiny treat or buy any food without worrying about being in debt, you don't know how you're going to pay the electricity bill and any bit of joy or creativity has been sapped out of you you feel anxious and overwhelmed most of the time and you are so tired so tired you can't get dressed and you can't stop crying at everything

@BertieBotts I did try this, but they said they are not able to do this. So annoyed as I raraely use pay at pump but had my child with me.

BertieBotts · 24/06/2022 22:57

That's annoying! Maybe you could ask the garage to cover it since they were the ones that caused it! Probably a no but you never know.

If you tell the bank you're in financial hardship they are not supposed to take charges out any more - didn't they find this unlawful or something?

No idea on legalities. Petrol station were beyond unhelpful and to be honest I was too close to losing it I just left.
Was on hold with bank "helpline" somewhere in another continent by sounds of it and they're unable to help either. Just infuriating that one thing like this dictates the now non event that is this weekend. Don't get me wrong I had no fancy plans but had hoped to be able cover some basics and treat little one. But no Tesco obviously come first 🤨

www.tesco.com/help/pay-at-pump/payatpump

this might help?

DoubleShotEspresso · 24/06/2022 23:48

Thanks for the link I've followed the "contact us" link for whatever that's worth
The rest just seems to confirm they can just do this. Never again

StickyFingeredWeeNed · 25/06/2022 07:26

*BertieBotts yes! I have a basic current account with nationwide (no OD or anything fancy). I was getting charged £5 a pop for a bounces direct debit.

I wrote a letter to chief exec (google the address and write private and confidential) basically saying “as you can see my only income is from tax credits and child benefit) and not only did I get all those fivers reimbursed - but they never take a charge which would put me in OD.

iirc there might be some keywords you need to use or legislation you need to draw on, so have a google first.

BertieBotts · 25/06/2022 12:41

They are sneaky. The charges used to be around £30 and if I had something that pushed me over unexpectedly I'd get charged for the charge because the charge itself would cause a further overdraft Angry and still my card wouldn't decline so if I didn't realise immediately it was lethal.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/06/2022 13:35

Pay at pump bastard system has taken £100 and I only filled £25.
Bank advises I'm now in unauthorised overdraft and google suggests it could take upto 72 hours for petrol station to return the funds which I'm now going to lose some of fgs who allows these systems???

Who allows them? Rich people and companies. Wealthy corporations just cannot possibly comprehend why there might be a problem with them keeping hold of your money (or even your chargeable unauthorised overdraft) because they will ensure that you get it all back (well, likely not the charges).

If money for you is just digits on a screen that vary between a very high number and a colossally high number, you aren't going to understand or care one bit that somebody who is relying on their last £20 that you've just effectively forcibly borrowed from them cannot feed their family this week on it if you bullyingly keep it from them for a fortnight.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/06/2022 13:41

Oh, yes, the letters where they used to charge the poor £20-£30 or more for the 'service' of informing them that they were poor - and now £20-£30 poorer still.

At least, after a load of complaints, they were eventually forced to reduce it a bit; but it was a highly lucrative business where you could just decide to send somebody a letter and then charge them for it. Not much different really from some of these insidious companies who repeatedly send out random premium text messages with rubbish jokes or whatever to people who never asked for them and don't want them, but still end up being charged £5 for the 'privilege'.

Clearly yes.

Surely the payment is just "pending" and not actually gone through? In which case it will disappear rather than be refunded and therefore your statement will never show you as being overdrawn

MarchoftheAardvark · 26/06/2022 10:05

But it stops you being able to use the money that’s ring fenced I think

DoubleShotEspresso · 26/06/2022 16:24

@happinessischocolate no. I've been unable to access any funds since filling the car. Which left me with nothing so I've been nowhere -hoping it gets refunded and I get some if it back tomorrow morning

creamwitheverything · 26/06/2022 20:56

My friend was struggling like some families on here after she was dumped with a 3 day old baby and 2 other primary school aged children, He the feckless fucking waste of skin just upped and left citing he wasnt ready for the responsibility ...after 10 yrs together,. Luckily she lived in a rented council property and managed to stay there after many months of torture regarding her financial matters,She decided one day to stop worrying and go bankrupt. She was so devastated doing this but it has helped her no end by getting the strain off her mentally. She had nothing to loose ,he took the car and it might be an option for starting again like it was for her,She is much more contented and happy now.

I know this isn’t the point of this post but it’s actually nice to read about other people being in the same position as me!

It is the point OP it’s sad but it helps to know you’re not alone x

I am so sorry OP - this is shocking - if you or I accidentally took £100 from someone I think we’d prob be arrested. This just highlights the gap between those who get it and those who don’t. If you have very little to live on this sort of thing can totally floor you and cause all kinds of problems - direct debits unpaid overdraft charges - let alone not being able to buy food ! It’s disgusting! I had a similar issue last month when a company accidentally took £300 from me - which id already paid once - the bank took 5 days to clear the pending amount which put me into unauthorised overdraft bounced direct debits I had - the stress and worry this caused me too was horrible - all over the jubilee bank holiday. It’s shit and it really shouldn’t ever happen !
