She brought our desserts to the table and placed them in front of us.. and then...

the waitress placed my spoon into my custard.
I was miffed.

I am 67, just had my birthday. I am the same as I ever was, same face, same figure, same vitality. The only thing that is different about me is the colour of my hair. I quit dyeing it two years ago and it is now silver.

I have noticed that I am sort of becoming invisible in a way I never imagined, and both my daughter and I think it is because of my hair.
Everyone at the table noticed what she did and were gobsmacked. I had to fish the spoon out and wipe it down since half of the handle was covered in bloody custard.
I would not even do that to my grandchildren !
I like my hair colour, but I do not like being treated as if I am in need of help.
Luckily, she did not offer to feed me :(

Maybe she saw it was your birthday and that was her way of giving you special treatment....

Hmm

I think with all the problems people are facing in the world at the moment a spoon in some desert is a sand grain in space problem. Give your head a wobble and laugh about

Maybe she’s got small children at home and sometimes lapses into ‘Mum’ mode. Happened to me once, I was standing next to a colleague who was serving a customer and when they didn’t say please I chirped ‘What’s the magic word?’ Blush

This was my first thought - I imagine she went back to the kitchen and cringed over it...

Putting the spoon in though...... it went beyond the pale:)

Of course it did OP, it's akin to murder . Hope you called the Police.

Desperately trying not to make joke about being taken into custardy

Josoliesmlaurdog · 09/06/2022 17:25

Think she forgot where she was and was being a Mum !
Life too short to take offence .

Give her custard a wobble*

*This gag works best if it was thick custard, not the thin pouring sort

Topseyt123 · 09/06/2022 17:28

I am quite grey haired but have never had this happen. I'm nearly 56 if anyone's interested.

I don't really think this would have unduly bothered me. I might be a bit bemused but not offended. I'd still have accepted the dessert but would probably have asked her to bring me out a clean spoon and then left it at that.

I've never been to a restaurant before that sticks your cutlery into your food when they bring it.

Johntoewba · 09/06/2022 17:29

I think the op was feeling a little yellow

@Jackanackanory brilliant 🤩

SamMil · 09/06/2022 17:31

Trying to be gentle here, but it does sound like you might be reading a bit too much into this. A lot of the time, humans just do things automatically without thinking about it. I know I sometimes do random things and then realise they were a bit weird! This is probably the case here - she did it without thinking about it.

It's a bit of a stretch to say she did it because your grey hair made her think you were infirm. You're 67, not 97! Your family are probably just teasing.

butterpuffed · 09/06/2022 17:32

FangsForTheMemory · 09/06/2022 17:19

All the people who don't see the problem: you will when you're over 65 or so.

Rubbish ! I'm roughly the same age as OP and it's never happened to me, and I wouldn't think anything of it if it did. I think the waitress just had a momentary lapse of concentration .

Some of the comments on this thread are terrible.

I'm fucking dis custard 🙁

😂😂😂😂Love it !

Overthinking.

QuestionableMouse · 09/06/2022 17:35

I put a straw into someone's drink recently. Just a brain fart and didn't mean anything by it!

ThirtyThreeTrees · 09/06/2022 17:36

The hospitality industry is struggling everywhere due to a staffing crisis.

What she did was odd but she's probably overworked, tired, or just new and silly. She might just have had a ditzy moment.

To see it as anything other than a very minor lapse of judgment is blowing it out of proportion.

67 isn't old. You know, everyone knows it.
Chill and enjoy the rest of your birthday.

KevinTheKoala · 09/06/2022 17:37

Cimone · 09/06/2022 16:25

All you had to do is tell her to take it back and bring your dessert to you without sticking anything into it. It's yours and you want to see it whole and unviolated before you begin eating.

No need to focus on hair color and age. You just had a stupid server.

Is there any need to be so nasty about the server? Calling somebody stupid for a mistake when they could be overworked or tired (or distracted by upcoming exams as one colleague of mine currently is) is uncalled for. Everybody makes silly mistakes at times.

ElenaSt · 09/06/2022 17:37

I cannot for the life of me see that her leaving a spoon in your dessert means you must be infirm.

I myself am an old codger and have never had anyone leave a spoon in my dessert as an indication that someone must feed me.

It's when they come towards you with a bib is the time to worry!

Tf is this thread 😳
Desserts being "violated" ffs 😭😂

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 09/06/2022 17:40

I think you're overthinking it. It's just a spoon.

I do it if I'm carrying pudding through to the table for the kids. It's a habit that's all. You'd be cutting your nose off to spite your face if you don't go back because of this.

It's your family who have made you feel silly not the waitress, if they've teased you that it's your age.

Redglitter · 09/06/2022 17:40

Bunty55 · 09/06/2022 16:15

mackthepony

No I didn't complain. I think maybe I should have. It spoiled a nice time and we won't be going back.

Sorry but if something like that spoiled your outing you're totally over reacting. I cant believe its become such an issue

DeepDown12 · 09/06/2022 17:41

Maybe I'm missing something but how would a spoon in the custard help older person? They'd still have to take it out and pour it over the pudding and repeat the motion, no?

NiqueNique · 09/06/2022 17:41

Sooo many eggcellent puns!! Grin Grin You each get my Star for today!

@Bunty55 It’s so much more likely that it was the custard, and not you, that made her do it - she was probably just in mum-mode and did it without thinking. Don’t give it another thought.

I do agree with pp that as it bothered you so much, you’re obviously feeling a bit sensitive about looking older than you feel/coming across older to others, so you might be better off going back to dyeing your hair.

Stylishkidintheriot · 09/06/2022 17:42

I’m another one thinking she’s in mum mode.

ive once grabbed the back of a colleagues swinging chair in a meeting and put it back up. Complete reflex as my son kept doing it at the dinner table and I was always having to catch it
