What's with the leggings wedgie look?

I hope I'm not being rude and perhaps I'm showing my age, but what is it with people wearing leggings the are wedged right into their butt crack? It seems like this is the current trend but it seems so vulgar 🙈

I have these leggings. They are really comfy & make my arse look great

mizzo · 05/06/2022 18:46

Men dress for function and practicality - not showing this amount of flesh seems perfectly possible for them.

I'm not sure this is true. Yes lots of mens clothes are more functional than womens clothing but men very often still dress to impress. Haven't you ever seen those bodybuilder types in their ultra tight tops and skinny jeans?
My Dad dresses for functionality now but in the seventies he wore platforms, flares and an Afghan coat, none of which were particularly practical or functional.
As for flashing the flesh you only need a bit of sun to find half the males in any given UK town strolling around topless burning the beef.

dumdumduuuummmmm · 05/06/2022 18:48

I can deal with the wedgie look ( sort of) but the camel toe/front bump/tight leg look that I've spent a life time trying to avoid puzzles me!

”Does my bum look big enough in this.”

Nutellaspoon · 05/06/2022 18:53

It's an easy sell because no one can see their own bum and how ridiculous it looks. I know this because my morning commute up the bit escalator involves witnesses many bum cracks, lots of VPL and a fair amount of cellulite squished against legging material.

LowlandLucky · 05/06/2022 18:54

It may be fashionable but there are very few who can pull the look off.

grannybiker · 05/06/2022 18:55

Back when leggings first came in, I was too body conscious to wear them. However, I soon discovered they were perfect for my lifestyle at the time, so just made sure I had a long enough tunic, t-shirt or jumper.
Fast forward a few years and on the one hand I'm delighted young women can wear what they choose without being body shamed. As long as their Mummies let them...
Outdoor pool last summer. small gaggle of girls with their pert and flawless buttocks on show. Then another couple with their "Ordinary" bikinis pulled up their arse crack to fit in! 😳

gunnersgold · 05/06/2022 15:29

I also don't understand why people wear leggings as trousers with normal clothes .. surely these are meant for the gym ! 🤔

Probably because they want to?

NerrSnerr · 05/06/2022 18:59

gunnersgold · 05/06/2022 16:08

No ! I love trainers
What I mean is when people replace trousers with gym leggings . So a nice top and jacket and gym leggings .
I mean each to their own but it looks weird to me . So many nice options that are just as comfy!

Maybe they think they're nice?

Wear what you want and let others wear what they want.

I meant for sport - men at the gym just don’t wear leggings like this, men swimming don’t wear trunks that are cut half way up their arse cheeks, men running don’t wear shorts that do the same.

Even the tight shorts and trousers on a night out don’t show the amount of flesh that women do. They just don’t.

tootiredtoocare · 05/06/2022 19:00

It's fashion. It comes and goes, some of it is nice, some of it is god awful. In the 50's they had those torturous looking triangle bras. My mother wore such short mini skirts in the 60's that she had to have matching knickers. In the 90's we had Wonderbras. In the 2010/20's we're back to bums. If you don't like it, don't wear them. 🙄

SirChenjins · 05/06/2022 19:01

Fashion always for the male gaze. You’d have thought that 60 years on we’d have moved on a bit.

SirChenjins · 05/06/2022 19:03

70 years. Bloody hell, I’m old

Attention seeking 🤢

THIS! I totally agree, it's attention seeking. Also yet another thing for young girls to feel self conscious about, if they don't have a bulbous bottom of just the right shape like the models in the pics. 🙄

When I see threads like this I’m reminded of this segment from the tv show Miranda (of all things). See attached photo, and/or read conversation below:

Miranda: Oh I hate those programmes.I know what I’d do if I had one of those programmes.

Cut to Miranda approaching woman in the street with a microphone

Miranda: Excuse me, hello! Right well let’s have a look at you. Well I wouldn’t wear that too but you seem comfortable, are you?

Woman: Yeah

Miranda: Do you like it?

Woman: Yeah

Miranda: Do you care that others may not?

Woman: No

Miranda: Brilliant. Then wear that, then. Bye!

I don't get it?

PandoraP · 05/06/2022 19:13

I can’t get used to big bums being fashionable. When I was young we wanted small bums.

Titsywoo · 05/06/2022 19:17

It really annoys me that big bums are in now. I have a big arse but was taken the piss out of about it all the time by men in the 90s. I was born at the wrong time Grin

Lots of them use padding now

Me too, but we're in the minority!

Fritilleries · 05/06/2022 19:27

It's grim. Just plain inappropriate and attention seeking. It's as if any sense of modesty and decorum has evaporated.

WooNoodle · 05/06/2022 19:30

I would wear them if I had a nice bum

Diverseopinions · 05/06/2022 19:33

The model has a very nice derriere, and the style shows it off. I expect there is elastic and special fibres to lift it. The photo shoot and use of shadow probably accentuates the shape . It is really little different to 1950s cone bras, nipped in waists, or the other fashions we have seen over the decades. Remember gym or yoga leggings which, five years ago, were designed to cling to the labia and show every contour?

What is remarkable, I think, is that fashion is largely bypassed in favour of skin tight sexy wear. We have seen shared on MN some hideous baby doll summer dresses with puffed sleeves, and it takes the young to adapt the awful look and wear just a touch of Spanish frill on the cap sleeves and make it smart with a simple short skirt . Yes. I think young women will always choose to look attractive.

Cycling is good for bum shaping.

Iusyje · 05/06/2022 19:33

SchoolThing · 05/06/2022 16:35

What makes you think that this is “dressing for the male gaze”?

Maybe they wear them because they want to?

C'mon, the truth is sometimes difficult to hear. Why would a sensible woman, of any age, dress as if they are on heat? That's what these bump crack leggings say to me? And even worse when the wedgie is on the front.

Iusyje · 05/06/2022 19:36

coffeecupsandfairylights · 05/06/2022 17:16

Exactly this!

You don't see men caring about what other men are wearing 🙄

It's not so much about not caring what people think. It's that my eyes are being forced to look at these semi-naked women.

SpacePotato · 05/06/2022 19:38

My 20 year old arse and tiny waist would've been perfect for those pants. Unfortunately, boobs were in fashion then and I was flat chested. Not even a wonderbra with the promised 'hello boys' cheeky cleavage could help with that one.

It's just fashion. I wore the tiny pleated skirts and those tops that were a flap of material tied with tiny thin straps at the back.

Next year it will be something else.
